Low Country - Edisto 2oz
Meehhh
Nothing special here for me. Nothing disagreeable but it just doesn't satisfy the reasons I smoke.

Cornell & Diehl - Eight State Burley 2oz
Easy to enjoy
I love this stuff. Nutty, creamy, smokey deliciousness. Medium strength and always happy from the first light to the last puff.

Comoy's - Cask No.7 3.5oz
Best of the medallions
I ordered every popular medallion tobacco and chose this as the best one. I will admit to being a perique freak which this delivers but the slight topping and or the smooth cavendish bullseye soften out the perique just right. I wouldn’t notice the topping if I didn’t know it was there

Samuel Gawith - Squadron Leader 50g
Didn't know I would like this so much!
Squadron leader is an english blend with a compelling flavor different than all the others. It is incredibly well balanced between natural sweet Virginia and savory latakia but there is also this subtle mystery from the orientals that I can't quite identify and it keeps me wanting more! I am normally a perique freak but this has none and I don't miss it.

G. L. Pease - Maltese Falcon 2oz
Well done, but not my thing
I am a fan of most GL Pease blends and this one has the same silky smooth quality I have come to expect from Pease. It behaves well and generates a lot of smoke but just falls flat for me. I took a can with me on a weak long vacation to Mexico and while the first two bowls were enjoyable I grew tired of the mystery flavor and the rather medium quality of it all. It had me wishing for something else.

Cornell & Diehl - Star of the East Flake 2oz
If I was limited to one blend this would be it
I am a huge fan of several other tobaccos but if I had to stranded on an island with only one that I wouldn't grow tired of I think this would be it. Just really well done. And as others have said it is easily available.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Bob's Chocolate Flake 50g
Don't let the "chocolate" stop you
This tobacco is a wonderful rich smoke with or without the "chocolate" in the background. After smoking a couple tins of this at various stages of dryness I can say I enjoy it the same whether it is moist with the chocolate aroma in the background or dry without the chocolate aroma left. This is not a goopy aromatic just a great english in G&H style.

Esoterica - And So To Bed 2oz
Amazing sweetness without any topping
Really high quality stuff with an amazing natural sweetness and richness without any topping to get there. Glad I was able to get a tin along with a few other esoterica blends. Still, if it was more easily available it's distinctive sweetness would probably not become an every day smoke for me.It's definitely crave worthy like a dessert, but it's just not the meat and potatoes for me.

Warped - Kings Stride 2oz
If this was a cigar I would still smoke cigars
Really rich creamy cigar like without the overpowering taste of most cigar blends Some interesting cheese flavors that would be great with a glass of red wine or to smoke at the cigar bar with friends, where cigar smoke might ruin another pipe blend.

Vauen - English Blend No. 22 50g
Nice crossover
A high quality tobacco that would make a nice crossover blend for someone tiring of straight aromatics but still need some extra topping before embarking on the world of traditional english blends. It is a little too sweet for my taste at this stage of my pipe smoking but I would have loved this when I began crossing over from aromatics to english and such and wouldn't mind a bowl of this now and then.

G. L. Pease - Quiet Nights 2oz
Creamy, smokey, perfection.
Wow this is something special. Halfway between a Balken and English. I enjoyed the first pipe so much . At first it is so smooth that it seems all the flavors would be melded into one, but that is not the case. There is plenty going on here to hold my interest. The perique is lighter than expected so I still enjoy other blends to fill that need. All together this a delightful creamy smooth smoke. I can say this is what I crave most often. All other blends in my cellar have a new standard to measure up to or they need to offer something all together different to keep my interest. Becoming a fan of all things Pease.

Arango - Balkan Supreme
Something missing
I’m not sure what’s missing from this blend. It is very flavorful but just not as satisfying as the flavor suggests. Sort of like eating a veggie burger. It tastes right but just not as satisfying as the real thing. Try Hearth and Home Blackhouse instead for a great and satisfying Balkan.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Rum Flake 50g
Not my cup of tea
In fact tea to a coffee drinker is a great way to describe this tobacco. There is nothing wrong with it having the grassy and yeast bread flavors of the Virginia in the background but it’s bland to someone who prefers more flavorful choices. The nicotine is there just not much flavor if you prefer English or aromatics this one won’t sway you to Virginia’s. For more flavor stick to G&H Bobs Chocolate Flake or American Delight.

Hearth & Home - Black House 1.75oz
True Balken
Wow. This is everything you expect a balken to be at a reasonable price and easy to find at smokingpipes. Lots of nuanced flavors some spicy some rich just a great smoke that keeps me interested and craving the next bowl. Updaate: I smoked this blend before I got a hold of a tin of Balken Sobranie with a couple years of aging. Now I can definitively say that the Black House still outshines the famed BS.

Davidoff - English Mixture 50g
Pleasant all day English
I often smoke at my local Davidoff store but have never purchased their pipe tobacco before. Last Saturday I showed up with a bowl full of tobacco that just wasn’t working for me. So I broke down and tried the Davidoff English. It turns out to be a nice medium English that saved my evening. It happens to be an aromatic English with tin notes of raisin and fig which made a true English with the usual Latakia much more enjoyable for my wife sitting next to me. I got none of the aromatic flavor which was just fine with me because it is an excellent quality tobacco blend. Nice to know I can always grab a tin of this at my favorite smoke spot.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Black Twist
Satisfying
This stuff is strong and strangely appealing but it is not an everyday flavor I want but every one in a while on a Saturday Night when I am going to have more than one strong drink this is the strong tobacco I want to go with it. I am always keeping some on hand for those moments.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Balkan Mixture 50g
Latakia but not very Balken
I’m a big fan of almost everything G&H does but this one does not work for me. The Latakia is overpowering and one dimensional. I have to blend it with something else to get a balanced smoke. I do like several other balkans so it’s not that I don’t like Latakia. Your mileage may vary because it is a high quality tobacco like all G&H.

Cornell & Diehl - Blockade Runner 2oz
Ages well
So I am not a big Virginia smoker but I cellared a can of this for more than 10 years and the result was amazing. Great on its own or to sweeten any English blends or Balkan blends that need more dimension. About one pinch of this to two pinches of the other has turned some other blends into perfection for me. I’m using up the last bit all on its own and it is one of the finest smokes I have ever had.

Seattle Pipe Club - Plum Pudding Special Reserve 4oz
Even Better then the Best
What’s better than the best tobacco blend ever? This stuff is. I thought PP couldn’t get any better until this came along. It’s not so different that I am ever disappointed with the original but I will order several of these if they ever come available again.

Seattle Pipe Club - Plum Pudding 2oz
Doesn’t get much better!
If I had the ability to blend tobaccos this would be my goal. The only thing better is the special reserve version or possibly if this improves with age. We shall see!

Cornell & Diehl - Mississippi Mud 2oz
Flavorfull and easy going
I am relatively new to enjoying non-aromatic English blends with latakia.I do enjoy a strong tobacco which this is, but it is not so complex or nuanced that you have to be an expert to appreciate it. If you are a wine drinker, it reminds me of the new style of red blends from California. Bold flavors without fancy pedigree. I have some fancier choices that can wait in the cellar until my pallet is more sophisticated. In the meantime this is a definite re-buy.

Sutliff - Pumpkin Spice
What's not to Love
So often pipe smokers look down on aromatics that are more about the topping than the tobacco, but this is one smoke that makes me say, " I still like a few aromatics." Who would have guessed that the nation would go crazy for pumpkin spice: coffee doughnuts and everything else? Well I am here to say that pumpkin spice does the same for tobacco as it does for coffee. I can't wait for fall to enjoy them together. I even have a corn cob pipe dedicated to it. And by the way as with most Sutliff flavors you are still getting a premium blend of tobaccos far better than drug store brands.

Mixture No. 79 - Mixture No. 79 1.5oz
Love it.
A great every day tobacco with anise and lakeland? There is a mystery flavor /scent that I just love to get lost in. To be fair some can't stand it. This one is a love it or hate it smoke for most people. I am on the love it side. I figure I am in good company as it was also a favorite of both Hugh Heffner and Frank Sinatra.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Ennerdale Flake 50g
Don't Be Afraid of Lakeland
Most smokers either love or hate lakeland. If you can relax and enjoy the mystery in the flavors of a bit of lakeland, this one is most enjoyable! It' like the difference between gin and vodka. But the real center stage of Ennerdale is a premium tobacco blend that is just so enjoyable.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - American Delite 50g
A Delight
Does tobacco get any better than this? If I was stranded on an island with only one tobacco, this would be the one I would want. When you open the tin you get this odd smell of yeast roles with some sweet apples and golden raisins baked in, but when you smoke it all I can thing about is the quality of the tobacco. The next time I opened the tin that smell that seemed odd to me the first time was now strangely appealing.

Sutliff - 500 African Queen
A Premium Aromatic
Most of the Sutliff Aromatics are decent, certainly better than the drugstore brands, but this one is far superior. The exotic African tobaccos in this make for one of the best smokes you will ever have. While it does have a pleasant aromatic flavor I hardly notice it because my taste buds focus on one the best tobacco smoke flavors out there. If you started with aromatics but are ready to move on to other things this is a great choice. You will be smoking it for the high quality tobacco not the topping.

Sutliff - Aged Maduro Cavendish
Great Tobacco
Aged Maduro Cav by Sutliff is a great aromatic that would not be offensive to many non-aromatic smokers. If you are just starting out in pipe smoking, try this one. A smooth stronger smoke makes it behave well and stays consistent throughout the bowl. It has the sweetness of an aromatic without being overpowering. And you can't go wrong with sutliff's pricing.
