G. L. Pease - Quiet Nights 2oz
No Syrian Latakia
No comparison to Penzance whatsoever. The past 2 years all they were getting out of Cyprus was scrap Latakia. Pease Lagonda had more Latakia flavor than QN. That said, we just wrote to the Syrian Delagation to the UN. Here are some details ofthe letter we sent. We asked why they cannot produce Latakia as before. It is the basis for the best selling English blends. Also, if the processing is hurried up and not carefully done, the resulting product is way inferior to what we were getting in 2004-2005, like Penzance and Margate. It's a shame that the prime ingredient is no,longer available. Obviously, the reason we cannot obtain these UK produced Latakia blends is because they cannot get the real McCoy! C & D bought up the great % of all the Cyprian Latakia this year. It's just NOT the same. No SG, no Esoterica, etc. is available. It's maddening. The money is there to buy the good stuff, but who is preventing the UK factories from making the best pipe tobaccos on the planet?

G. L. Pease - Lagonda 2oz
Mild "English" Blend
Can was packed on 02/20/19. Some say to "age" this a little and also to dry it out somewhat before smoking. However, I just had to have a bowl as it was my first taste of Lagonda. The big factor was the Latakia that was not as predominant in the blend. Some say for (2) years now that it is coming from Lebanon, not Cyprus. There is zero coming from Syria. Perhaps the Latakia was not processed in the traditional manner. It's a pretty long process. On opening the tin, it gave off an "English" scent, but not the usual bold aroma. We have been informed that Cyprian Latakia is being processed currently. The past (2) years, Lebanon has provided a lot of Latakia. I did notice that I still have the taste of the pipeful hours afterwards. It's milder than Balkan Saseini. I'll be fair, and give it more time to age and maybe that will do the trick. Pease puts stickers on the bottom of each can noting the pack date. Wonder how long to age this? Any advice is welcome.

Cornell & Diehl - Latakia
Syrian, Cyprian & Lebanese Latakia
C&D does some of the Pease baccy. Just got Lagonda & Quiet Nights on sale! As you know, SG & Esoterica tobaccos are nowhere to be had. BUT, just got email from Mehmet, in Turkey, the Director of Bee tobacco, specializing in Latakia. Here is a cc if that good news (hopefully) email. Hello Hilary, Whole latakia leaf came from Lebonan last 2 years, as unprocessed raw cutted leaf from plantation. Due to drought Latakia leaf did not grown for several years in Cyprus, we only managed to produce fine scrap and large scrap tobaccos. Cyprus, Syria and Lebonan has same climate, so its actually same. But of course ones which came out rom Lebonan is more known. Actually process methods matters. This year in ovens we have also Cyprus local Latakia, after good rainy winter. They all reserved for customer in USA. Cornell & Diehlh had both Cyprian and syrian. Syria`s tobacco production is damaged and not groving If next winter rains much again, next year we will have 40k tons of leaf tobacco. Regards, Mehmet Director
