HU - Makhuwa 100g
Great VaBurPer blend
A flavorful and interesting VaBurPer blend from HU. Chocolatey, nutty burley and probably a light chocolate topping along with smooth virginia, and perique. Smooth, and really flavorful. Another winner from HU. In the US, we have chocolate breakfast cereal, and the chocolate in Makhuwa reminds me of cocoa pebbles’ flavor. I guess you could call it more of a light chocolate. Very good.
HU - Director's Cut 100g
One of the best blends
I’m fairly new to pipe smoking, so I hadn’t had a chance to try HU. I was pleasantly surprised to see it available on several US tobacconist’s sites for sale. After smoking a few bowls of the Director’s Cut I feel that I can safely say this is an outstanding blend. Each individual tobacco used can be tasted through nearly every puff. Smooth, flavorful, and oh so creamy, the tobaccos used seem to be superior quality. I mean most of what we get today is high standards, but this just seems outstanding. The dark fired Kentucky adds a great smokey flavor that accents the virginia, perique, and burley. Smokey, nutty, spicy, woody, fruity- a ton of great flavors. Burns well and cool. A slight roughness near the end but never harsh. If you want a detailed review by a long time smoker, check out reviews by Jiminks, or Jim Amash, on a few tobacco review sites. Apparently, the blend has been slightly changed at times, but hopefully now, it’s close to what Hans meant for it to be in the beginning. Edit: Im not sure why anyone would say this has maple or vanilla flavoring, or is wet in the tin. Ignore those comments, Director’s Cut may have a slight sugar topping, but it certainly isnt maple or vanilla! Certainly isnt wet in the tin. It has a bit of moisture but this isnt molto dulce at all. Burns well right out ofcthe tin with very little dottle.
Orlik - Golden Sliced 100g
Perfect VaPer
As of mid November 2024, I’ve been smoking pipe tobacco for 3 months. Orlik was the first thing I smoked, and after trying a ton of other stuff running the gamut of available pipe tobaccos, I keep reaching for Virginias. I love the tangy, toasty, citrusy goodness they offer. When it comes to the standard for flake VaPers, I’d think this is right up there with what’s considered the best. I’m always going to have a tin of it around, as long as I can, anyway.
Cornell & Diehl - Carolina Red Flake 2oz
Amazing
I bought 4 tins, stoved 2 at 190 degrees for 2 hours, let em sit for 3 weeks before opening, microwaved one for a few seconds & pressed it in a noodle press for a week sitting at 90 degrees. I left one stoved tin in a jar unpressed. Left one tin unopened & am smoking an opened tin.The crumble cake from the pressed tin is spectacular. Will probably let it sit for a few months to uncompress a bit and merry more flavor. Dark fruit, molasses, sweet grass, and more complexity, smoothness, and cooler burning dominate the stoved, pressed reds. Fresh from the tin is everything youd expect from a sweet C&D Red Carolina flake tin, fresh hay, citrus, a bit of fruit with a great all around sweet tobacco finish. Great batch in ‘24 for sure.
Warped - Scarecrow 2oz
Amazing
Bought 4 tins of the ‘24 and wish I’d bought more. The tin note as others mentioned, is caramel cream, like a cream liqueur or maybe a werthers candy. The taste is more tobacco forward with the nutty burley and tangy reds being the main taste. I notice the toppings, but they take a backseat to the tobacco goodness. Let’s hope they don’t skip a year next season ;)
