Sutliff - Maple Shadows II 8oz
Great aromatic that they should make a regular option
Honestly, I was worried with such a huge tin, that it wouldn't hold up over time. I've had 1.75oz aromatic tins open for a month that lost flavor by the end. I've been dipping in every day for the last two months and I am just now halfway through the tin and the flavor is still holding strong. And they did it without making it a goopy mess. Kudos. As to that flavor, it's definitely toward the strong side of medium, the maple is very prominent and distinct, there's no question it is there, it is not subtle, but it doesn't completely overpower the burley taste and actually mixes with it very well. The woody flavor of the dark-fired burley and maple flavors go so well together. It doesn't run hot (as should be expected as it's just ODF and Cavendish) and doesn't bite or get rough. It's a shame this was a limited release, I wish it was a regular production blend. Hopefully they'll bring it back again next fall.

Tobacco Jars - Medium CVault Humidified Tobacco Container
Perfect size for 2-3 oz loose ribbon
Perfectly sized to hold 2 oz of ribbon without smashing it in. If you stuff it in tight, might get as many as 4 oz ribbon in without having to mash the tobacco in too tight. Seems well built.

Stands & Pouches - Peterson Avoca 3 Pipe Combo Bag
Great Bag
The bag is very well made. Test fit three of my pipes (Chacom bent apple 871, Savinelli prince 315 KS, and a Peterson bent bulldog 80s spigot) and they all fit securely but it didn't seem super tight. If you have full bent pipes, you'll probably have a hard time, but that's true of any pipe bag designed like this. Though I put three bent pipes, none are bent that much. The Peterson has the most aggressive bent stem of the three I tried, and even that one I was able to get hooked into the elastic loop. The Chacom has a hefty and wide stem and that went in without issue. I'm sure if you bypass the elastic loop, the tapered leather tube alone will probably be secure enough. It's nice and compact, but with enough space for some wiggle room.

The Retrohale: A Technique for Advanced Flavor Appreciation
  • ► Retrohaling came very natural to me, but I was a cigarette smoker long before bekng a pipe smoker. I never had to do any of that complex learning to do it.That said, tey retrohaling everything you ever try. While some tobaccos will have what is basically an enhancement of flavor, others will have an entirely different flavor in the nose than they do in the mouth (retrohaling doesn't always just enhance all the flavor equally).Yes, some will burn and tingle in the nose, others won't burn at all. But it's worth it, especially with some blends where you can experience two different flavors at once, one that you taste in your mouth and another you taste in the nose (they don't always mix and it's an odd sensation having two different flavors at once, alternating between them by controlling the amount of retrohale is somewhat akin to crossing your eyes for some and for others it's more like being able to keep one eye still while moving your other eye).Somewhat similar to how black coffee seems to change in taste based on temperature (the cooler it becomes, the more bitter it tastes, which is due to the fact that bitter receptors on our tongues don't function over a certain temperature—the coffee isn't less bitter when it's hot, we just can't taste as much of what's there when it's hot).
