Dunhill - Dark Flake 50g
Exceptional
This lovely flake from Dunhill is indeed full bodied and rewarding. It burns slow, which is a good thing. The flavor profile is deep and rich with a touch of pepper. It is well worth the time and investment.
Dunhill - Durbar 50g
A Beautiful Balkan
This is a lovely Balkan mixture. The core of orientals take delivers a spiciness that is ever so gently curbed by the latakia. The Virginias emerge from time to time with a mellow sweetness. The traditional Dunhill ribbon loaded easily and combustion was perfect. This mixture is a slow burn with no bite at all. A joy to smoke. Highly recommended.
Rattray's - Hal O' The Wynd 100g
A First Rate Mixture
This is a lovely bright and spicy mixture that offers nuanced back-end notes of sweetness. The Perique is not overstated and marries nicely with the bright Virginia. The broken flake cut provides for easy packing and combustion. It holds moisture well and I see no need to decant it from the tin once open. A rewarding and satisfying offering that is well worth the invest of both capital and time. Enjoy!
Savinelli - Doblone d'Oro 100g
A Solid Mixture
This mixture represents a great leap forward for Savinelli blending. The tin note is pleasing. Moisture content leans toward the dry side which is fine with me, A spicy raisin/fig component dominates while smoking. A satisfying mixture that is on the upper-medium in strength. Combustion is excellent though some re-lights were needed. Well worth a try.
Peter Heinrichs - Dark Strong Flake 200g
Rich and Rewarding
This is a splendid smoking mixture. It provides a deep, complex and flavorful smoke. The flake rubs and packs well, ignition and burn are exceptional. This is a thick and creamy treat that can be enjoyed in the afternoon or evening. Deeply satisfying and delicious. While I do not find it overly strong you may. Highly recommended. Well worth your time and money.
Dunhill - Nightcap 50g
Contemplative.
Nightcap is bold and rich and strong...and wonderful. We all know that, But I particularly appreciate the nuances that Nightcap offers. The whisper of sweetness encountered mid-smoke that rounds off the edge of the day. The interplay of the Virginias against the Latakia core. Full and always satisfying, The traditional ribbon cut allows for ease of loading and smoking. Combustion is excellent and it smokes well in briars and cobs alike, Well worth your money and time.
Cornell & Diehl - Briar Fox 2oz
Superlative
While not a straight Virginia, Briar Fox is a very notable member of that particular family. The crumble cake is a welcome format that allows some flexibility of enjoyment. A full bodied smoke without the slightest hint of tongue-bite. It leaves me satisfied and with a feeling of accomplishment as well as wanting to come back for more as soon as possible. It is not accident that his blend is so well received. A good companion on a cold day. Combustion was excellent and no re-light was required. Well worth the money and time.
Dunhill - My Mixture 965 50g
The Benchmark English.
I have smoked many, many English blends over the years. Some were garden variety, some stood out. But all of them are measured against 965. There is a reason this has been blended and sold for over a century. The ribbon cut loads and smokes well, remaining cool. Combustion was excellent with no re-lights required. Medium to medium-plus in strength with a pleasant room note. The presence of the cavendish affords this blend a character I deeply enjoy. Well worth your money and time.
Three Nuns - Three Nuns 1.75oz
Excellent!
I know this isn't exactly the original blend. I never smoked the original and I suspect few here have. That aside, this Three Nuns is excellent. The flavor is pleasing and induces relaxation. There is a full-bodied dried fruit note that seems to linger in background. The room note was received very favorably. The roll-cake makes for easy packing, lighting and smoking. Combustion was good and no re-lights were needed. I have smoked this in briars and cobs with good results from both. Well worth the money and time.
