Lane Limited - 1-Q
something you should know (I didn't)
Propylene Glycol ("PG") apparently present to some degree in many of the tobaccos we smoke and pretty heavily used in 1Q: http://www.puff.com/forums/vb/general-pipe-forum/135584-propylene-glycol-pg-pipe-tobacco-pro-con.html Form your own opinion as I have, but it is good to be aware, I had no clue until a review mentioned PG and I googled it.

Lane Limited - 1-Q
smooth
I can certainly see why this is the No. 1 selling pipe tobacco in the world. No sticks, no twigs, none o'that, just beautiful long ribbons, moist that pack and smoke wonderfully. Very smooth, smokes cool, and gave a very long smoke from my MM cob. Talk about value for the dollar! A faint taste on the tongue, not taken with that but tolerable, in every other respect a most enjoyable bowl This is my first aro ever and I find myself wondering if Lane makes this without the aro component, nic is moderate, not a complex or rich flavor but very enjoyable and even when puffed aggressively, no tongue bite. Smooth!

Samuel Gawith - Best Brown Flake 250g
fabulous tobacco but....
I was immediately entranced with the rich complex aroma when the tin was opened but I found the moisture content extremely difficult to manage. First bowl folded and stuffed right out of the tin with no drying time, burned a little indentation inside... the bowl of my new Sav 320 so I tried rubbing it out - it was still too wet, left the rubbed BBF out overnight but that apparently was too much, I will try this tobacco again because of the incredible richness and complexity but the nic hit was overwhelming for me. Next time I will leave the flakes out for an hour or so and then place them in one of my tiny 1/2 pint mason jars to balance and try smoking rolled and stuffed in a smaller bowl. At this point I feel this tobacco is worth some effort in finding the right balance of moisture since it is so very rich and wonderful, I will update after another effort, for now 3 stars for me

Mac Baren - HH Old Dark Fired Ready Rubbed
cool smoke
I was a little concerned with the moisture content on the fresh dark fired I received from Smoking Pipes but it smoked well enough after a char and relight, albeit with some gurgling out of my Sav 320. I am a puffer and enjoyed big clouds of smoke from the dark fired - it smokes very cool with no tongue bite. A little lacking in the richness and complexity I am seeking, perhaps I was spoiled by the Gawith Best Brown flake, what a fabulous aroma when the tin is opened on the BBF but I was never able to get the moisture right on the BBF and the nic hit was overwhelming for me. Perhaps I will give the BBF another try out of a smaller bowl but so far my experience with flake (it was my first) is that it is a real challenge to optimize the moisture, not a problem with the dark fired ready rubbed but I will not reorder the dark fired, 3 plus stars for me.

Arango - Balkan Supreme
Addendum on the Arango
Smoked this in a MM Country Gentleman cob. I tightly packed one of the tiny 1/2 ounce mason jars I prefer and will update in a few weeks if I notice changes. Absolutely nothing wrong with this tobacco it just did not engage me in quite the way I want, I guess I am seeking a little more complexity and richness but it is a pleasure in the pipe because of its excellent smoking qualities.

Arango - Balkan Supreme
Smokes Beautifully
The 2 ounces of Arango Balkan Supreme I received from Smoking Pipes arrived at what is for me the perfect moisture content. Both the Lane 1Q and the HH Dark Fired I received in the same package were moister so I jarred both with some air in the jars and will let them sit for a while. No tongue bite with the Arango, just a little peppery tingle on the tongue, smoother than the Balkan Sasieni I recently consumed which was too sharp on the tongue for my taste. Flavor on the Arango is mild, not as rich as I might prefer, nic hit also moderate. 3 1/2+ stars for me.
