Sutliff - Match 20
Nice and smooth
Like Brian B., I have never tried the original (I have a tin on the way), but this blend deserves to be applauded on its own merits. Very smooth smoke, with a decent room note and a little sweetness to tone down the latakia.
F & K - Sterling Balkan
Nice and smooth
I smoke mostly English/Balkan blends and picked up an ounce of this to try it out. It was a bit damp out of the bag, but it lit easily, burned well and stayed cool throughout the smoke. Nice flavor and a good room note, the Virginias add just enough sweetness to balance the Latakia and Orientals. Definitely one to cellar.
McClelland - Craftsbury: Frog Morton's Cellar 100g
Nice crossover blend
I normally smoke English/Balkan blends. I have tried a few aromatics and rarely get much taste out of them. This cross between an English and an aromatic provides the taste of the English and the lighter room note of an aromatic. Definitely one I plan to keep as part of my rotation.
Mac Baren - HH Latakia Flake 3.5oz
Smooth and tasty
I love latakia-forward blends, and this flake delivers. A tad moist fresh out of the tin, but the aroma is delicious and it burned well with no bite. Definitely on my list to cellar.
McClelland - 5110 - Dark English Full
I smoke almost exclusively English/Balkan blends, and I wanted to like this tobacco, but for me it was just bland, with none of the Latakia-forward flavors I enjoy so much.
Lane Limited - Crown Achievement
Welcome back, old friend
Lane's Crown Achievement was one of my favorite tobaccos about 20 years ago. After a hiatus, I returned to pipe smoking about 10 years ago and tried to buy some more of this tobacco. Alas, it was no longer available. Flash forward to the present. I heard that Crown Achievement was back, and with the original formula, no less. I placed an order and eagerly anticipated its arrival. As soon as I got a whiff of the stuff, I knew my wait was over. This is an excellent English blend, perhaps my favorite overall. I will definitely be stocking up on this. Thanks for bringing it back.
Peter Stokkebye - PS306 English Oriental Supreme
I like the Stokkebye bulk English blends; they are easy to find, relatively inexpensive and, to me, taste great. I like this one as a change-up to my two other Stokkebye mainstay English blends, Proper English and English Luxury. All three have a permanent place in my rotation. Try this; you might like it as much as I do.
Peter Stokkebye - PS17 English Luxury
Smooth and mellow
One of my favorite bulk English blends. For some reason, I especially enjoy it in a Country Genteman corn cob pipe from Missouri Meerschaum. This is another great Stokkebye bulk blend, one I will always keep in my cellar.
Peter Stokkebye - PS52 Proper English
I am a big fan of the Stokkebye bulk English blends, and this is my favorite. I will always have plenty of this in my cellar. The price is very nice, too.
Sutliff - Balkan Luxury Blend 957 1.5oz
I smoke mostly English and Balkan blends, and this is in my top three. I love the way it smells fresh out of the tin, with the campfire smell of the Latakia combined with the sweetness of the cavendish. After letting it dry a little, it lights easily and stays lit. I tend to smoke too fast, but even puffing away like a little freight train, I never get bit. My only complaint about this tobacco is it is not sold in bulk, as I would love to jar up several pounds of it. If you enjoy English and Balkan blends, give this one a try, and it may become a mainstay of your rotation.
