Seattle Pipe Club - Deception Pass 2oz
Tried a bowl of this last night after giving it a good drying period and it was hot from nearly the first puff. I let it cool off before trying again and could only get halfway through the bowl before emptying. I really wanted to like this one too!
McClelland - Craftsbury: Frog Morton's Cellar 100g
In the middle of a bowl and I had to pause for a review it was that good! If you haven't bought this, do us all a favor and buy it. NOW!
Dan Tobacco - Treasures of Ireland: Shamrock 50g
Very light aromatic
Good smell our of the tin. The Cavendish is the main aroma. I don't get whiskey on the cold taste or throughout the bowl. Can run hot if you're not careful. It's an easy smoke for a beginner but the flavor is lacking
Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Black Irish X
A solid tobacco
The smell of this tobacco is very good straight from the bag. It is VERY moist - so I recommend drying what you want to smoke ahead of time, otherwise you face a challenge of lighting and a possibility of running too hot in the pipe. All that said the smoke smells like the moist leaf - a great thing. I personally didn't get much flavor out of this while smoking, but I could taste it afterwards - which again tastes like the moist leaf. I also cut off a piece for chewing and it is strong stuff - much like the smoke there is a kick to the leaf. Don't bite off more than you can chew. If you are a history buff and into how our forefathers smoked prior to tins - this is it (less the zip-lock bag this comes in). A solid three stars.
Samuel Gawith - 1792 Flake 50g
A Meal in a Pipe
This tobacco had a really strong smell and full bodied flavor. If you value your friendship with other non-smokers don't smoke this near them. They don't know what they are missing though. Really well made tobacco.
Hearth & Home - Berry Nice 1.5oz
Don't let the smell fool you
The smell right out of the can was somewhat soapy/chemical - after a few days this went away and the berry smell was great. The taste and smell are thick with berry. It was a crowd pleaser and made my beard/clothing smell of berries - can't complain about that!
Cornell & Diehl - Mocha 2oz
Sweet + Excellent Service
After writing my review I was immediately contacted by smokingpipes.com and they had shipped a new tin. WOW. That is great customer service right there and has me sold on being their customer. What about the tobacco though? The new tin had just the right moisture content. The tobacco right from the tin had a much sweeter aroma with no soap unpleasantness. The smoke was very smooth. It was still hard to get the coffee tastes - but dark chocolate was very easy to get. I've upped the stars to 3.25. It's, in my mind, a dessert tobacco - just right after something very sweet. The Mrs. liked the aroma as well - so that's always a plus!
Peterson - Nutty Cut 50g
Rum & Nuts
Peterson's "Nutty Cut" was very sweet smelling straight from the tin. You get sweet smelling rum, nuts, and sweet Virginia tobaccos. Upon toasting the tobacco and getting a smell of it you get sweet tobacco and nuts. The smoke is good. The after half a bowl begins to smell very sweet nutty - not macadamia nuts (maybe peanuts?) It was quite enjoyable with Ballantine's Blended Scotch Whiskey. (always aerate your whiskey before-hand!) It really brings out the nutty flavors in your mouth. Overall I give this 3.5 Stars. A solid smoke by Peterson!
Cornell & Diehl - Mocha 2oz
Dry, Small, & Smells Soapy
1st time I've ordered a Cornell & Diehl. I'll say that Smokingpipes.com has excellent selection and I received the tobacco quickly and at a good price. Out of all the tobacco I ordered I decided to open this first and have some coffe (mocha) with it. The tobacco upon opening it was nearly 50% shredded to a fine powder! It was dry. And the smell was nothing like mocha. It smells of a very sweet soap. I haven't smoked it yet - I'll repost when I do. But I scored it as I did in the hopes that it smokes better than I imagine... If not this gets a fat zero. I hope this is not analogous of this brand!
