McClelland - Red and Black 50g
Red & Black is the best new Virgina Flake
I was satisfied the first time I tried Red & Black. A few days later, gave it another try and found it does grow on you. Finally took a tin to work so I could have some throughout the day - even better. I really look forward to this new flake. Has all of the really goodness you would expect from McClelland. Only downside is not yet available in bulk for my cellar (how good would this be with a couple of years on it).

Peter Stokkebye - PS402 Luxury Twist Flake
Best Virginia Flake!
I liked this flake when first tried it a few years ago. I aged a 2 lb. jar - now 3 years and this is really something worth waiting for. Time to order a few more lbs. for the cellar.

G. L. Pease - Maltese Falcon 8oz
Very flavorful English style blend
I had this on my try shelf for over a year before opening. Sorry I waited. This has a very crisp, fresh, spicy flavor, with Latakia not too over powering. I tend to smoke this during breaks at work... keeps me satisfied through the day.

G. L. Pease - Sixpence 8oz
Sixppence is good at anytime
This one really surprised me! I am glad I ordered the 8 oz. as I will need to order more soon. The broken fakes smoke slowly and have a rich very flavorful finish (hard to describe, a bit earthy). It smokes to a white powdery ash; a very clean burn with no hint of a bite. At first I thought this would be just an evening smoke, but tried it in my morning pipe and was surprised by the smooth, not over powering flavors. Like to think this will go great with an evening scotch. This quickly was added to my regular inventory when Navy flake just won't do.

Comoy's - Cask No.4 3.5oz
Solid Navy Flake
I tried the 3.5 oz. tin. Had a good sweet Virginia flavor followed by the smooth Perigue. Do not try to smoke this too fast, as it will bite some. Smoked slowly the flavors are very good. I went ahead and ordered a 1 lb. bag to put away for a year or so to give it a real chance like I do for the St0kkebue Navy Flake (aging 2 years or more). This is worthy of a try and fairly inexpensive.

McClelland - Craftsbury: Frog Morton's Cellar 100g
A solid blend, worth a try
I keep a few tins in my inventory at all times. It ages well in the tin and even has an oak stave block in the tin to help with the melding (not really sure this isn't just for advertising). My opinion; this is the best of the Frog Morton series. I usually smoke Virginias or Navy flake sweet or flavored is not my thing, but this works for my mid-day smoke at work on occasion. I am told it has a pleasant room note as well. As far as a whiskey flavor... to me it is more like a brandy (not at all bad). I recommend as a good all around when you want something different. I go through maybe 4 tins a year so I smoke a tin in a week or 2, then don't open the next tin for few months until it again strikes my fancy.

Peter Stokkebye - PS400 Luxury Navy Flake
Set the standard by witch all others are measured, the bar is high indeed!
I have been smoking this flake for about 4 years. I do try others and many are very good. This flake needs to age a couple of years to truly meld into the best fine flake. I compare every time I order a few pounds... I try a couple of pipes with the new flake and then compare to my cellar stock with 2 to 3 years of aging... the aged is completely different (darker as well with aging). The aroma when an aged jar is opened is intoxicating. I do have varied tobaccos in my inventory and try new mixes always looking for something interesting, but so far nobody has replaced my favorite Navy flake. By the sales ranking, many must agree with me, and the great price is a real bonus as well! I am looking forward to hearing how the cap of dark rum works... caught my interest.

McClelland - 2015 Virginia-Perique Flake
Up there with the best! A very good option for Navy flake smokers
This is one of the best dark VA/PR that I have tried. Very flavorful Virginia with the right amount of Perigue (some add too much to the mix and overpower the Virginia). I now have 2 lbs. in my cellar to age about a year, although this flake is very good as is out of the bag. It gets another star added to the review when aged. Does need to be rubbed a bit to break it up as with any flake. Needs to be smoked slowly to pick up the subtle flavors of lemon and figs.

Cornell & Diehl - Briar Fox 16oz
Best of the C & D cakes... outstanding when aged a couple of years!
I added this to my standard tobacco inventory a few years ago. At that time is was routinely rated in the top 10 and is still highly rated today. It is very smooth and flavorful right from the tin. It has about the right mix of Virginia and Burley, with no bite. I now buy this in the 16 oz. brick packs a few at a time and age it a couple of years. This should be added to C & D cellar series, as it seems to allow the mix to blend into a smoother cool smoke. I usually smoke Navy Flake, but this as well as all of the C & D cakes I have tried are worthy.

Cornell & Diehl - Pirate Kake 16oz
Not for the faint of heart, has some punch to it!
I had ordered the Virginia sampler about 3 years ago, and did like the Pirate cake best... so ordered an 8 oz. tin. It then was lost on my tobacco shelf until August 2015. I do believe the time worked in my favor as the sharpness did mellow some. It was very smoky yet smooth (smelled a bit like a camp fire). I added 2 lbs. to my last order... tried a bit when it arrived and again it was a bit sharp but enjoyable. I will keep the 2 lbs. in my cellar and check on it every few month for the mellowing I enjoyed on my 2012 earlier order. To be honest... I would never have purchased this by just reading the 75 % Latakia, but trying this in the sampler was a very nice surprise! I do recommend to those that really like their more potent English blends. It may get my additional half star again with aging. Smoke it slow!

Orlik - Golden Sliced 100g
The best
Orlik Golden Sliced is about as good as it gets for the Virginia smoker. I only discovered this as it is regularly in the top 10 and I gave it a try. I initially bought 2 tins and had to place another order the following week. This is a constantly satisfying Virginia with very minimal top flavorings, just a subtle citrus that really freshens up the mellow no bite tobacco flavor. 100g lasts me about two weeks as I usually smoke this mid-day or evenings, but really is a good first pipe in the morning. I like to smoke this in a large pipe and smoke it kind of slow to really pick up the fresh sweet Virginia. I try to keep 3 or 4 tins on hand so I don’t run out between orders and occasionally I will pass along a tin to another pipe smoker to get their response. I have about 40 or so tobaccos I keep on hand, but if I had to only keep 1, this would be my choice. Too bad it isn’t available in bulk quantities.

Mac Baren - HH Mature Virginia 16oz
Very Satisfying; adding this to my reguar smoked inventory
I am a Virginia smoker about 70% of the time; Mac Baron #1 Virginia being my favorite tobacco. But the Mature Virginia is really good on its own, a nice change-up. Not as sharp as the #1, but a richer smoother, a bit smokier flavor. I do like a verity and plan to add this to my regular stock. This is also available in a tinned form for those that only want to try a bit before buying 1 lb.

Cornell & Diehl - Billy Budd
My go to afternoon smoke
I tried this not really expecting much. I am really a Virginia tobacco smoker since the 70s, although I did smoke cigars for about 10 years. I realy like the combination of the Latikia, but with the addition of the cigar leaf... this is exceptional. If you are looking to try something with a pipe tobacco in a bit of a different direction - try this. I am very satisfied and this has become my mid-day favorite.
