Dan Tobacco - Salty Dogs 50g
Sweet and Salty
Salty Dogs is probably one of the most esoteric plug tobaccos on the market. You really have to focus on this one to “get it.” It’s subtle in its characteristic Va/Per sweetness yet the periques have a salty tang. The yeasty, figgy notes come on strong then rapidly dissipate. Despite these subtle qualities, the smoke is full-bodied. The plug responds very favorably to being jarred and within a few months sugar crystals are everywhere. Excellent blend but I doubt it’ll be everyone’s cup of tea.
Velvet - Velvet 1.5oz
I don’t get it
Taste like burley and propyleneglycol. Haunted bookshop has a similar flavor profile sans the glycol and is by far it’s superior. If you’re looking specifically for a Codger blend go for Sir Walter Raleigh.
Dan Tobacco - The Mallard 50g
Step aside Elizabethan!
The Mallard delivers on everything it promises! A fantastically sweet yet mellow Virginia with no bite! Perfect as an all day smoke with a very pleasant sweet toasted bread room-note. Perfect for a fishing trip on a lazy summer afternoon! Burns cool.
Peterson - De Luxe Navy Rolls 50g
Fresh bakery deserts!
Peterson/Dunhill Navy Rolls is definitely a desert Va/Per. Awesome blend with Just a little aromatic sweetness. Similar to Escudo but lighter.
Davidoff - Flake Medallions 50g
Delicious Va/Per Coin!
My favorite of the spun coins with Cavendish core. Fresh bread and bakery permeate the smell and flavor of this baccy with a dash of sweetness from the Cavendish core. Perfect blend and I am not a fan of Cavendish. I always have some in my rotation. Try mixing (1:1) with a coin of Escudo for a special treat!
Mac Baren - HH Burley Flake 1.75oz
Burley and Cigar
A quality leaf but when I reach for Burley I want that dark, rich, fruit, and earth, not Cigar and orientals. Not something I’ll be ordering again but you may like it. My go-to Burley is Solani’s Burley flake or Haunted Bookshop.
Solani - Virginia Flake - 633 100g
King of Va/pers
All natural Va/per with no detectable topping. Wasn’t my favorite when fresh from the tin so I set it aside for 6 months. Upon my return I was rewarded with one of the richest smoothest Va/pers I’ve had. I really enjoy mixing this blend (50/50) with Solani Aged Burley flake or Escudo. One of the best blends you’ll have, guaranteed! ;) Hail to the king!
Solani - Virginia Flake - 633 50g
Gets even better with age
All natural Va/per with no detectable topping. Wasn’t my favorite when fresh so I set it aside for 6 months. Upon my return I was rewarded with one of the richest smoothest Va/pers I’ve had. I really enjoy mixing this blend (50/50) with Solani Aged Burley flake and Escudo. One of the best bowls you’ll have guaranteed! ;)
Cornell & Diehl - Mad Fiddler Flake 2oz
Apotheosis of morning blends!
The tin note of this tobacco is an absolutely intoxicating aroma of fermented apples and earth, one of the few blends where the tin note and smoking flavor match. It begs to be had with Coffee and oatmeal. I was uneasy at first because cavendish and I don’t usually get along, however the smoking character is superb with no bite nor taste of chemical casings. I’ve added this to my regular rotation. Personally I rate this as C&D’s best blend.
Pipe Accessories - Brigham Tobacco Pouch Vintage
Perfect for a gentleman's EDC!
A quality made leather pouch that smells of rich leather yet is easy to clean! Keeps ready-rubbed type blends for about a week and flakes can last 2-3 weeks + depending on moisture content. Looks right rolled up with my vintage style leather pipe role.
Comoy's - Cask No.4 3.5oz
Grass and Citrus
A superb Va/per. Good grassy sweetness with a hint of perique. A quality leaf, rivals Orlik GS, doesn’t bite. A personal go-to alongside Solani and the Orlik man. You won’t be disappointed.
Pipe Tools & Supplies - Pipemaster Clean and Cure 2oz
Great for a deep clean
As the title states this solution is perfect for deep cleaning (especially within the stem). I typically use barrel proof whiskey for daily maintenance.
Savinelli - Brunello Flake 100g
Brunello flake is a grassy Virginia with Burley, a little Macadonian leaf, and a hint of a wine-like topping. The tin note is amazing but unfortunately the flavor is somewhat lacking. Not horrible, just doesn’t match the expectations set by the tin note. Others may like it more but for me It’s lackluster.
A & C Petersen - Escudo Navy Deluxe 50g
Virginia and fresh bread
Escudo is my go-to Va/Per! Smells and tastes like a quality leaf with an undertone of yeast and bakery counter full of fresh sourdough bread on a Monday morning! I enjoy a pipe-full with my coffee as often as I’m able.
Solani - Aged Burley Flake - 656 50g
The Apotheosis of Burely
Solani Aged Burley flake is THE Burely blend. Rich dark fruit permeates the pallet and the room. Ive never met it’s equal in flavor and smoothness. Besides being a fantastic stand alone tobacco I frequently use it to tame Virginias and to add further depth and complexity to Solani’s Virginia flake and Orlik golden slice. A frequent go-to.
Capstan - Flake Blue 1.75oz
A Fruity Virginia
A good Virginia with generously applied sweet citrusy topping. Puff it on a beach while watching Sol goes down into the depths, or perhaps in a nook while reading the Hobbit on a rainy day. It is a little spendy for what it is but considering all the generic tins these days I’m glad this still comes in a square with card wrapped flakes. Decent blend. Too aromaticy for me.
Dunhill - Three Year Matured 50g
Sweet, Rich, and Citrus
A quality Virginia with sweet earthy notes and a slight citrus (perhaps bergamot “topping”), the topping is well applied and not gratuitous. This can be a strong blend in the Vit N department. I affectionately refer to it as “el chronico”. Like all Dunhill blends it’s a nice ribbon cut. Sorry to see it go but hopefully when it’s inevitably picked up again it’ll be done like this.
Sir Walter Raleigh - Regular 1.5oz
The Old Man’s Brand
SWR is probably the best “drugstore “ brand currently available. It’s not a high end tobacco by any means but it does have a unique cut, a nice burley flavor (without the heavily applied glycol), and a big time nostalgia factor! Try smoking some in a cob while listening to Elijah Wood narrate Huck Finn on Audible!
Cornell & Diehl - Red Stag 2oz
I had almost given up on English blends until I took a chance on this gem. I’m mostly a Va/per or Burley guy and this is the first Latakia blend ive found that I really really enjoyed. Ordering more to keep in my regular rotation. Smoke is silky with a perfect balance of sweet Virginia and smokey peppery latakia.
Vauen - Oxford Blend 50g
Excellent For Blending With Burley’s
I’m not a huge fan of aromatic tobaccos (they lack flavor and they burn) however I love bergamot so I had to give this a try. As a stand-alone tobacco I don’t think it hold up, however ive used it to liven up Burley blends and it works exceedingly well at that. The room note is amazing and a little goes a long way in improving the note of some of the harsher burley blends. I’ve had people come across the parlor to find out what I’m smoking. Non smokers find it pleasing as well.
Orlik - Golden Sliced 100g
The Apotheosis of Virginia
Orlik Golden Slice is my “go-to” Vaper! It’s one of the few Tobaccos where the tin note and the taste align. Pop the tin and you are whisked away to a cool summer morning with the smell of fresh cut grass and a soft dew. Perfect on a hot summer afternoon or cold winter night, the Orlik man is there for you. If you smoke it just right the hint of perique will give you a slight mocha note.
Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation - 1931 Flake 1.4oz
Burley with a fruity topping
This tobacco requires a little more finesse to work the flavor, smoke too quickly and it losses a lot of it’s flavor (probably due to the topping evaporating). However if you take your time you are rewarded with a smooth satisfying burley. Would make a good blend for beginners because it won’t burn the crap out of you if you puff to hard and will reward you with creamy, nuty, burley when you hit the proper cadence. If you like this blend try Solani Aged Burley
