Seattle Pipe Club - Virginia Jazz 2oz
Age it, then air it
Kudos to all of you who can smoke this right out of a fresh tin. I found the tin note absolutely delicious, but had trouble keeping it lit. I put it away for a bit and came back to it, gave it some air on work bench before crumbling, and it smoked beautifully. Very Perique forward to my tastebuds, and I love that. I have another tin aging and we'll see how that turns out. I think it's going to take it a level up.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Bosun Plug
No soapiness
I really dislike the soapy fragrance that comes with some Lakeland blends and I’m not getting it from this plug. I’m smoking it right now as I write and I definitely pick up the geranium and the clove really became apparent in the middle of the bowl but mostly I’m getting great Virginia flavor. Thoroughly enjoying this plug. It arrived a bit on the moist side and you really have to play with it to get it into your pipe but that’s the nature of plugs.

Seattle Pipe Club - Hogshead 4oz
Just the tobacco please
Just the tobacco please, no comments on stock or price from me. I got 3 tins, two to age and one to smoke now. Thoroughly enjoying this. I love the way it burns and it has that delicious stewed fruit flavor that I always hope to find in flue cured Virginias. Very much looking forward to opening another 10 in a year to see how it has aged. It will be tough to wait!

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Ennerdale Flake 50g
No soapiness
I can't abide that soapiness that you get with some Lakelands, and I detected none here. I have a cob churchwarden that I reserve for lakeland blends and I find this is the idea pipe for this tobacco. I love to catch the roomnote from the embers in the bowl. Really is a contemplative smoke.

Top 5
Sometimes you find a tobacco that just works for you. Something about your body chemistry, the way you smoke, your preference for spice/sweetness/nicotine/cut etc. For me, this is a top five. Packs great in my Dunhill Oom Paul, which is my new obsession, and smokes cool and easy, with big virginia flavors and a bit of spice on the retrohale from the perique. The touch of smokiness in the Kentucky is just right. Honestly, I can't get enough.

Sillem's - Commodore Flake 50g
Unexpected delight
Purchased this on the strength of one of Shane‘s reviews and came back to get three more tins. It’s not at all the Latakia bomb that I thought it might be and I love the cedary piney fragrance. I have to say the room note does linger a bit and my wife could still smell it on my face several hours later and she wasn’t a big fan so this is one when I am on a hunting trip or home alone for a bit. Love the voluminous clouds of smoke. And it’s very cool. Highly recommend.

Reiner - Blend No. 71 100g
Not just delicious it’s also beautiful
When you open the can you can’t help but think wow this is really beautiful tobacco. Such a long flakes! You can’t help but admire it. And the fragrance is just incredible. This is a desert island smoke. Extremely well-balanced and such flavor! I have a reverse calabash that I have reserved for this blend and nothing else goes in that pipe.

Solani - Aged Burley Flake - 656 50g
If you can find it buy it
Should be in anyone’s rotation. Just the best burley I can think of and I’ve tried quite a few. It’s definitely in my top five.

Peter Heinrichs - Curly Block 275g
Couldn’t make it work
I’m not a newbie and I just couldn’t make this work in my pipe. So I did what any rational person would do I ordered more and put it away for a few years. Still haven’t touched it. But I remember that first week of struggling with it and trying to get it to smoke the way the top reviewers on tobacco reviews.com said it should smoke. I just didn’t have any luck. I’ll come back to it and update the review. But this one is really not for novices and come to think of it it’s not for your avg casual smoker either. I hope to have great things to report this time next year. Don’t feel bad if you missed out because it’s hard to get. Shrug it off and go with Solani.

Peterson - 3 P's Peterson's Perfect Plug 50g
Morning with coffee
You know every once in a while you find a perfect pairing? Well three Ps with a mug of coffee in the morning is it for me. Much easier to prep than you would expect from a plug, and if you have a mug of Java in front of you and a little bit of time to play with your tobacco this is a fantastic option. Plus, I have 3 tins aging; looking forward to popping them in a few years.

Solani - Virginia Flake - 633 100g
Ideal.
Platonic ideal of a vaper. That’s it. That’s the review.

Samuel Gawith - 1792 Flake 250g
Wish it wasn’t so hard to get
I really think this is amazing tobacco and I didn’t find the nic hit all that overpowering like some did. The Tonquin bean is not so syrupy as some vanilla additions are, and the fragrance is sort of similar. Definitely has an old world feeling to it and I think it would be great for every piper to try. It’s just too hard to get.

Mac Baren - Danish Mixture Modern 3.5oz
Ideal aro
For me this is the ideal aromatic. It’s tobacco forward and the aromatic additions are not at all overpowering. The fruit and vanilla are not so strong that you can’t get tobacco in every puff but they are just delightfully added and the room note is fantastic. It has such a delicious smell that when I first purchased it I couldn’t stop opening the tin to put my nose in it. It’s just absolutely delicious.

War Horse - Bar 1.75oz
Ticks all the boxes
The only complaint I have is that this will ghost a pipe. I have a cobb that is dedicated to stronger flavor profiles and I use it for this. It’s not an overwhelming aromatic and you definitely get tobacco flavor primarily, but it’s the Cocoa in the background that will stick in your pipe. It’s quite pleasant but just something to be aware of if you prefer Straight Virginia’s or vapors and come back to a pipe and the fragrance of Warhorse is still in it.

Rattray's - Exotic Passion 100g
This one really impresses non-smokers
This is one you can puff on around non-smoking friends and they will say “wow what is that?“ It’s just an incredible fragrance. Really perfumes the world around you. It’s some thing that I love but the nic hit is so mild I don’t use it very often unless I’m around newbies or non-smoking friends. Once or twice I have blended it with something stronger in the nicotine department and that worked well for me.

Tabac De La Semois - Le Petit Robin 100g
Took some time
Honestly it just didn’t work for me at first. It’s something I came back to a couple of times a year and now that I “get it“ I can’t get enough of it. Definitely something that grows on you and don’t be surprised if you don’t enjoy your first puff or first bowl but give it a chance. It is different and unusual and delicious.

Mac Baren - HH Pure Virginia 3.5oz
Have the right pipe
In a chimney, with time to spare and sipping slowly this is heaven. Doesn’t perform nearly as well in pipes that aren’t tall and narrow.

G. L. Pease - Cairo 2oz
Better love orientals
I don’t want to downgrade it for being oriental heavy but the Orientals were a bit strong for me. Not that it’s not a great tobacco, it is and I recognize that. But for those of you who are typically Virginia perique lovers or Burley or whatever and don’t go for the tobaccos that are heavy on Orientals this would not be to your liking.

Filters & Adaptors - Savinelli 6mm Balsa Filters (20 Count)
The second best thing to a Kirsten
They work great and I can only think of one thing that works better, a Kirsten. Kirsten is my go to for moist tobacco or on a humid day. But in my pipes that take the 6 mm or even the nine (diff product) these are excellent and do everything they’re supposed to do.

Reiner - Professional 100g
Amazing fragrance
For me this is just the all-time best smelling aromatic out there. I brought some to a barbecue to share with friends after dinner and one of my friends who actually doesn’t smoke pipes stole the last of my tobacco because he loved the smell so much he wanted to keep it in a drawer at home like potpourri or something. Seriously. It smells that good. But the tobacco flavor really does come through when you smoke it and although it isn’t automatic you predominately get rich tobacco from your pipe. Just a top-notch stuff.

Peter Heinrichs - Dark Strong Flake 200g
Lots of options
They should really show you a photo of the flakes. There is a stripe of Virginia down the middle and then dark Kentucky on either side. They are lots of fun to either take apart and pack the Kentucky first or second. Or you can cross cut it or cube cut it and let it all mingle together or break it up with your fingers. There are lots of different options and I thoroughly enjoyed trying several different ways. A lot of people talk about the punch of nicotine and I didn’t find it all that strong myself but I have a very high tolerance. Deeply rich and flavorful and very high on my list.

Easy and rich
I’m a fan of shag cuts and pease blends so I had to try this. Packed firmly it was not difficult to get the cadence right. For me it was mostly about the Kentucky, which I loved, and the perique was nice and spicey. Have to admit I didn’t get a lot of classic virginia flavor because the Kentucky and perique were in the forefront, but the VA did come forward now and then and that was enough to suit my tastes.

Sutliff - Rum & Maple
Not too sweet
Don’t let the maple in the name put you off. Yes, there is a clear maple fragrance, but no it’s not syrupy sweet. The tobacco really comes through and the maple is more of a top not. Nice mild Nic hit too.

Esoterica - Penzance 8oz
Pearls before swine
It’s one of the all-time greats and I think people who give it bad reviews are just bitter that it’s so hard to purchase. Yes it’s ridiculous that there is a waiting list and it’s nearly impossible to get. But when you do get your hands on it, it is just spectacular tobacco.
