McClelland - 110 - Just Plain Nut
Excellent
This is an excellent blend. While this is not a true aromatic since there is no topping but you will be surprised by the taste you receive. The taste is very nutty a bit smoky and slightly sweet with hay flavor in the background. Great aroma in the room and burns easy but don't puff to much as it can bite if smoked quickly. This is an outstanding nut flavor actually about the best I have ever smoked that claim to be a nut flavor tobacco. I also mix this blend with a bit of Frog Morton to get a real smoky nutty flavor. It seems the Latakia in the Frog Morton brings out the nutty flavor.

McClelland - 110 - Just Plain Nut
A winner from McCelland
This is an excellent blend. Lights very easy and burns well. You need to smoke it like an aromatic to get the full flavor and taste. The nutty, butter and earthy flavors will be there in spades. Smoke volume is light and room note is almost nonexistent. If you like the taste of nuts and can keep your bowl fairly cool this will be an outstanding smoke.

McConnell - Pure Latakia 50g
Follow up to my follow up
I just wanted to share this with other Smoking Pipe customers. I received an email Keith at customer service. He read my comments on this blend and made the gracious offer to take back my tins of this blend for a full refund since it has changed from Syrian to Cypress Latakia. Now if that is not outstanding customer service I don't know what is. I have always had the very best experience with Smoking Pipes and this is just one more reason why I always use them for any of my tobacco as well as pipes from time to time. Well done Smoking Pipes!!

McConnell - Pure Latakia 50g
Follow up not Syrian
Looked on the back of my tins. This is Cyprus Latakia NOT Syrian. I guess Smoking Pipes is being straight forward telling you up front. The sticker is on the back and small saying pure Cypress Latakia. I guess Germany has run out of Syrian Latakia. The tin note is about the same but once I smoked it straight I knew it was not Syrian. It just does not have that big sweet smoky flavor you get from Syrian Latakia. I am truly disappointed that I bought 7 tins for mixing but I guess you just can't get pure mixing Syrian Latakia any longer. Just wanted set the record straight.

McConnell - Pure Latakia 50g
Misleading someone is wrong
Everything I have researched about this blend is that it is Syrian Latakia NOT Cypress Latakia. I am unsure why smoking pipes is saying it is Latakia from Cypress. Even McConnell says it's Syrian Latakia. My nose tells me it sure smells like Syprian Latakia. I add to my Frog Morton to punch it up a little as well as a few blends I play around with to enhance my pleasure. I am a Latakia lover but only Syrian Latakia as the Cypress is too weak in the sweet wood smoke flavor I love. You should buy this with confidence that it should be Syrian Latakia.

McClelland - 221-B Series: Black Shag 50g
Like Holmes very emotionless!
So this blend is much like Sherlock no real emotion. Just a no nonsense blend that does not give much nor does it take away much. The flavor and taste are pretty nondescript perhaps a few earthy tones from time to time. Room note is the same as there is some aromas but not much. This would be a decent evening smoke but just don't expect much but you also won't be disappointed either. It's a nice smoke just don't expect much. If I could add a good amount of Syrian Latakia I think it would really boost up the taste and room note.

Dunhill - My Mixture 965 50g
The famous 965
Venerable 965. The mark for all Latakia lovers everywhere. This is a wonderful blend that has stood the test of time.....however, some blends have caught up and sadly passed ole 965. I truly enjoy this blend but there are now others out there that simply taste better. There are pipe snobs that will tell you the ONLY smoke Dunhill or 965. Who cares! I always am looking for the "holy grail " for me. That means trying other blends. I have found some I simply enjoy more the venerable 965. I won't waste your time describing the flavor or taste as you have heard it many times before. Just let me say that while a great tobacco there are better ones out there.

Dunhill - Nightcap 50g
Just OK
This blend has been around for some time. For some reason I had a tin I just never opened. Found it and thought I should really give this a try. Don't know how I missed it for so long. I am a big Latakia lover albeit Syrian much more than Cypress mixtures. The tin note is nice but don't get a lot of Latakia smoked wood smell. Taste is a bit disappointing for me. Looking for much more sweet wood smoke flavor and what I got was much more floral. Room note is simply average. I know this is a popular blend but for me it was just above average.

Peterson - Nutty Cut 50g
Will bite ya but good smoke
Boy you gotta sip this blend. It will bite like a bulldog if you do not take it really slow and even then you will get some bite. Great tin note. Had to relight several times till I got halfway through the bowl. The room note is outstanding. Lots of nutty smells. You also get some nutty flavor but sadly only some. If it could taste as great as it smells it would be 5 stars for me. It is a great evening smoke to savor over a long period of time. I suggest you smoke in a larger bowl as this blend tends to get hot and does not do well in a smallish type bowl as the heat just kills the flavor.

McClelland - Craftsbury: Frog Morton 50g
At last!!! I have found it!
For many years I have been searching for that perfect Virginia mixture that smokes like a long ago blend I loved but no longer is available. It had that wonderful sweet hay, baked bread and smoked flavor. Well I have found it by gosh! This is a damn delicious blend that gives off sweet hay, baked bread and smoky even a hint of barbecue flavor. This is the most tasty blend I have ever smoked. I can not think of a better Virginia blend I have ever smoked. Gives you clouds of thick smoke and is very mild if smoked slowly. Burns very very slowly and if respected will not burn hot in the least. This tobacco is meant to be enjoyed slowly and a small bowl can last you well over an hour. Frankly I never expected to say my favorite Virginia blend has the name "frog" in it but frankly I don't care. It is just that good and flavorful. Thank you McCellend!!

Former - Private Flake 50g
Great blend
While I agree this is an aromatic I get more of a great Virginia blend from this outstanding smoke. Lights so easy and burns super cool. You do get a bit of nicotine tingle but not really that much. Oh the taste is right down my alley. I love a good Virginia and this gives that wonderful sweet hay baking bread flavor. Yes there is a hint of perhaps fig and alcohol but it is very very faint. Room note is nice but very mild. If you love a good Virginia blend that has taste this is one of the best. As an aromatic it leaves a bit to be desired. I have added this to my rotation not as an aromatic but more as a top notch Virginia !

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Brown Twist
Don't smoke on empty stomach!!!!
Now this blend will kick your azzzz in a heartbeat if your not respectful of the power of this blend. You sip this you do not puff this blend or you will barf you breakfast! The flavor is outstanding and burns cool with tons and tons of nice creamy smoke. Respect it and you will be rewarded.....puff away at this blend and you will find yourself in a world of hurt!!!!

Cornell & Diehl - Apricots and Cream 2oz
Average to good
This is an above average aromatic. Like anything else in life.....some folks like it and some don't. I am pretty much in the middle of the fence on this one. The issue I have is the flavor comes and goes as you smoke. When the flavor is there this is one of the best tasting aros out there. When the flavor goes it is just another mild smoke. The smoke is mellow and full with little to no burn if you smoke slow. Aromatics just like English, Balkin and any other mixture making slow (sipping) draws gives you much more from your tobacco than anything else you or the blend could do. I can make the best tobacco taste like crap by just puffing a hot bowl for awhile.

Sutliff - Archduke Ferdinand 1.5oz
Weaker than others
This blend while mellow is weaker than other Sutliff mixtures as it comes to taste. As you would expect from Sutliff this is a good smoking mellow aromatic but less flavor than....say Barbados Plantation.

Sutliff - Molto Dolce 1.5oz
Good tasty aromatic
When you get the taste it is really good. Once again the flavor comes and goes. This mixture needs to be mixed up more to distribute the flavor when it comes in tins. Sutliff brands tend to have great flavor but it is not continuous throughout the smoke. By mixing completely out of the tin you will find a more consistent flavor through the smoke. Also burns cool and completely if your not a puffer.

Sutliff - Barbados Plantation 1.5oz
Better than most
This blend is certainly better than most aromatics out there. There is really good flavor there but sometimes it comes and goes. Also one bowl will have great taste another will be weak. Suggestion is one let it dry a bit and two mix it completely before you begin to start using it. Burns cool and nice room note. Great taste when you hit the sweet spot.

Hearth & Home - Black House 1.75oz
Decent
Decent smoke. Room note is not outstanding. First puffs give off a peppery taste and smooths down to more of a barbecue smoky flavor, which I did like. Trouble is as I got near the end of the bowl it got very heavy on pepper. I guess my search continues for that elusive wood smoke flavor.

Mixture No. 79 - Mixture No. 79 1.5oz
Yuck
One pipe full was all I needed.....yuck. Tasted like laundry detergent to me. Room note was very floral. As I said......YUCK!

Lane Limited - Dark Red
Nice but will bite ya
I have never smoked a true cherry blend that didn't bite like hell. A tobacconist told me once because of the topping of cherry there will always be a bite with any amount of cherry topping to help the flavor. He told me the more and stronger the topping the greater the chance of bite. Just the way it is! Well props to Lane as this smoke is pretty smooth has only a little bite at the end of the bowl and a nice cherry flavor. Now I got little or no vanilla but there is certainly some cherry there. This is probably the best cherry blend I have ever smoked but yes it will bite ya even if you smoke very slow. God help you if your a fast puffer!!

Sutliff - Irish Creme
Weak
Pretty weak as taste is concerned. I like much more taste than this smoke provides.

Sutliff - Creme Brulee
Simply one of the best
This is at the top of my rotation of aromatics. One of the most tasty smokes I have enjoyed. There is taste that is really there throughout the smoke. If you don't puff your brains out this smokes very cool and will give you a very delightful taste to the end of the bowl. If you like aromatics that truly give you a sweet taste and give it throughout the smoke.....well there are not many out there better than this.

Sutliff - Buttered Rum
Better than expected!
Ok, so buttered rum you expect to taste mostly rum right. Well whatever they did darn if I don't taste a bit of butter flavor. Frankly this is really a nice smoke regardless of the flavor. Now to be honest the taste is not strong or even medium but it is in the background throughout the smoke. This is just a really nice smoke even for a non-aromatic smoker. Just a very pleasing smoke. Now if your looking for an aromatic that will "knock you socks off" look elsewhere. If you want a nice relaxing smoke that gives you a nice after taste this is a must try!

Cornell & Diehl - Nutty Irishman
Nope!
Yuck.....no decent flavor burns hot and leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth. This tobacco goes to my "crappy" jar to only smoke after Armageddon!

Cornell & Diehl - Apricots and Cream
Nice smoke!
This is a nice flavored smoke. Now it is NOT as strong of a flavor as it is rated on this site. They have it at 5 "dots" for taste and I would put it more at 3.5 to 4 "dots". You will get a sweet apricot flavor at the start, if you smoke slowly. Unfortunately that flavor vanishes as the smoke continues. Your left with a very light flavor that stays cool and very mild. One of my more preferred aromatics.

Sutliff - Frosty Mint
Great mixer
I doubt if anyone can enjoy this tobacco straight out of the bag. It is just overwhelming taste. Now that being said it is a fantastic mixer. I have mixed this tobacco with many other aromatics as well as a few non-aromatics. Just a dab will do ya. Put a pinch or two with 4 to 8 ounces of another aromatic, preferably a coffee or chocolate flavor. You will find a very interesting and refreshing flavor. If your really brave put a pinch or two with a strong smoke. You will find this will calm and refresh a overpower strong tobacco. That is why I say it is great for mixing. Just remember a little bit goes a long way!
