Lane Limited - HGL
Decades of codgers can't be wrong
With the demise of McClelland a self proclaimed "old codger" recommended I try blends that have stood the test of time and that are at very little risk of going anywhere saying "just cause they have been there forever does not mean they aren't any good" I took this advice to heart and sampled Lane HGL, my expectations were low but I was proved wrong in my prejudices of HGL basically being Captain Black with latakia added. HGL is a sublime blend and I find it an excellent old school type of smoke. It packs easily and takes to a light quite well, it begins with a light sweetness that maintains throughout most of the smoke and also satisfies my need for a bit smokiness in a blend. Leaves a good room note and after taste as well as a nice mustache aroma for the wife. Can easily be smoked throughout the day. I only give it 4 stars because it is relatively weak in nicotine. A must try blend from the golden days of yore.

Cornell & Diehl - Old College
Flunked Out
Old College starts out with a toasty/smokey/nutty sweetness to it but then as the bowl progresses, the blend becomes incredible bland after the first 3rd of the bowl. tastes like ash and burns hot.

Orlik - Golden Sliced 100g
lives up to the hype
While not my favorite tobacco, it certainly delivers on it promises of having a natural mild sweetness in both tin aroma and taste. the perique is not too spicy, its at just the right level. The learning curve surrounding getting the best results out of this blend are where my frustrations lay. whether its drying time, whether or not to rub out, or finding the right pipe, this blend can be quite fickle but, when you find all the right pieces of the puzzle and put them in place, this is quite a good smoke. I may have to cellar this one as well.

Cornell & Diehl - Belmont Station
HELLmont station
I cannot stand this blend. i think it is cased with a urinal cake, probably sourced from belmont station itself.

G. L. Pease - Lombard 2oz
mild and subtle VaPer
This was the first blend to turn me on to G.L. Pease. The key to this blend is in its subtleties. if your not paying attention, your just blowing smoke. but when your attention and clean palate is tuned to the blend, you will find the virginias are mildly sweet, the latakia a faint whisper, the perique just hinting on spice and tanginess. one of my favorite parts of this smoking experience is the whisp of smoke that comes from the bowl, wafting under my nose, it smells like bbq ribs being smoked on the grill. no kidding!

Peter Stokkebye - PS23 B & B
If captain black was actually good.
To me, this is all i ever wanted from CB. stokkebye strikes again with another tasty blend. with subtle sweet notes and excellent room note, this is a great alternative to one of the most popular disappointments in the tobacco world. word of caution though, it can be a little bitey, mainly from the steam, so give it some drying time and smoke it like an adult and you will happy.

Cornell & Diehl - Pegasus
take flight with PEGASUS!
I love this blend. its so freakin tasty! its almost like smoking a breakfast cereal, except, this ones for adults only cause the nic hit floored me but it was worth it. i recommend a large bowl for this one. can be a bit touchy on the tongue but treat it with some respect and a decent cadence and you will be greatly rewarded.

Peter Stokkebye - PS306 English Oriental Supreme
Absolutely love this blend
This blend has quickly become one of my all time favorites. not only is the price point very easy on the pockets, the quality of this blend is really up there. its smokey sweet, smooth with just enough spice from the orientals. it has volume from the cavendish and an excellent incense like room note and a satisfying nic hit from the burley. wonderful mouth feel. Highly recommended.

Lane Limited - Ready Rubbed 1.5oz
move over carter!
This is a no nonsense OTC burley blend. easy to pack, tastes great, tangy with some cocoa. does not have that nasty chemical taste of CH. doesnt bite, has decent room note and pleasant aftertaste. probably works well for breaking in a pipe. certainly worth a try.

G. L. Pease - Union Square 2oz
Excellent Virginia
While I cannot attest to how this blend tastes out of a fresh tin, I can say that the 8 year old tin I popped open was absolutely excellent. The aging potential for this blend is incredible. it has a whole spectrum of flavors and depth. pure virginia goodness. stock up while you can.

Sir Walter Raleigh - Aromatic 1.5oz
Daily breakfast blend
Every morning on the way to work i smoke either carter hall or sir Walter raleigh aromatic. SWRA has come out as the clear winner between these two blends. moisture content if quite good, loads easily (but don't pack too tight) has great room note and is slightly sweet and pretty consistent throughout the whole bowl. can bite a little if pushed and leaves a good aftertaste. a must try OTC

McClelland - Craftsbury: Frog Morton 50g
Smooth, smokey, sweet
Frog morton is an excellent english aromatic, or at least in my opinion it is. the tin note is very sweet and smokey. i like to open my tin, let it air out for an hour or so and cover back up, then the next morning, i pick some out and let it dry under a lamp for about 5 minutes. the blend takes to a light pretty easily and when smoked using the breath method, provides a smooth and sweet smoking experience. the first half is excellent, and then the latter becomes a little dull and become hard to keep lit and most attempts to make it burn down farther into the bowl create harshness and tongue bite.

Cornell & Diehl - Old Joe Krantz
Hardcore
I just might not have the testicular fortitude to handle a blend as intense as old joe krantz. as far as burleys are concerned, its like old joe drove a bulldozer through carter hall and then went on a rampage and beat the crap out of everybody. not for the faint of heart, strong taste, hot burning and good nic kick to the face.

Peter Stokkebye - PS403 Luxury Bullseye Flake
BULLSEYE!
this blend is absolutely excellent and one of my favorites.the bag smells of sweet hay, the virginias are quite tasty, the perique adds just the right amount of spice and adds a pleasurable, perfumey room note(and fragrant retro-hale) and the cavendish provides a sweet treat while smoking. the bullseyes are very delicate in the bag so be careful, they also rub out real well, its just up to you how you want to deal with the cavendish core, break/cut it up, leave it whole etc...

Cornell & Diehl - Sweet English
disgusting
something is wrong with this blend. my 1oz sample smelled like vomit? in the bag, and left a ghost in my bowl that smelled of poop. buyer beware!
