Mixture No. 79 - Mixture No. 79 1.5oz
Root Beer
The bag smells nicely of Root Beer. The smoke and room note however are just standard old school burley and rather plain. If you like Prince Albert or Carter Hall, you'll probably enjoy Mixture 79. I put off trying this based on reviews that gave the impression it had a Lakland / Old Lady soap tatse. None was present.

E. Hoffman Company - Spilman Mixture 2.5oz
Instant Favorite
Instant favorite from the first bowl. Very smooth, and you might suspect there is some cavendish in the mix but there isn't. The anise/vanilla note is very pleasant but slightly in the background. The aroma aligns nicely with other Iwan Ries blends.

Sutliff - Great Outdoors 1.5oz
Field and Stream
This is a good modern alternate for the old Field and Stream. I actually prefer this over the Sutliff F&S Match. The anise flavoring is done well without being overbearing. As others have said it's a top notch OTC burley forward blend.

Ashton - Rainy Day 50g
It's Ok
Bought this based on the "Tobacco Search" tool ranking the room note as "Very Pleasant". Unfortunately, I didn't get much from the smoke or room note. It was Ok, but not a stand out warranting a re-order.The tin note reminds me very much of Chacom #2 (purple). The fruit listed on that blend is plum, and I suspect they used it for this as well.

Paladin - Black Cherry 1.5oz
Your Grandpa's Cherry
Many of us started smoking a pipe out of a sense of nostalgia, trying to find an aroma we recalled coming from our Grandpa's pipe. If your Grandpa smoked a cherry blend, this will hit the nail on the head. It smells a bit artificial in the bag, but just scoop some up in a Dr. Grabow, light it up, and sit back and enjoy. Burns well with no tongue bite for a straight forward very pleasant experience.

Half and Half - Half and Half 7oz
What Grandpa Smoked
The aroma of Half and Half is pure nostalgia. It's the only tobacco Grandpa smoked in his Dr. Grabows.

Seattle Pipe Club - Potlatch 2oz
Not for me.
Good cut, moisture content, and smoked down to a nice white ash. Unfortunately, it tasted like old lady soap and left an aftertaste that lingered for a couple hours. Much higher in nicotine than expected.

Mac Baren - Black Ambrosia 3.5oz
Not what I had hoped for
The tin note is similar to Holger Danske Black and Bourbon, but smoked there isn't much going on. It's OK, just rather blah. I'll stick with the Holger Danske.

Iwan Ries - Three Star Blue 1.5oz
1970's
Just a very nice everyday smoke. The bag smells of anise and there is some vanilla in the smoke as well. This is what I would expect pipe smoking was all about back in the 1970's.

Cobblestone - High Spirits Kahlua 1.5oz
Unexpected Surprise
I ordered this on a whim just to put me over the threshold for free shipping on an order of my tried and true favorites. Figured what the heck, try something new. So glad I did! Smells wonderful in the tin and the room note is very pleasant. Will definitely order again.

Dan Tobacco - Devil's Holiday 50g
Good but Pricey
Excellent tin note. Very distinct. Smells like bright red raspberries and blue berries. Somewhat reminds me of a bubblegum flavor I had as a kid, but I can't recall what it was. Smooth smoke, great room note, very pleasant. The only thing I can knock this for is the price. It's a good smoke, but I don't think it's "that" good compared to others. If you like this, check out Lane Black Raspberry or Holger Danske Black and Bourbon.

Cornell & Diehl - King Cake 2oz
Frankenberry?
Never had New Orleans King Cake before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The notes I get are strawberry, possibly Frankenberry cereal. Good mechanics, easy smoke, very pleasant.

Cult - Blood Red Moon 50g
It's just cherry pipe tobacco...
It's just cherry pipe tobacco. Nothing more, nothing less. Smells like cherry air freshner from the car wash (the kind they spray under your seats), or a cherry tootsie roll pop. It's very pleasant and smokes well, but I don't get the hype. Really no better or worse than any other cherry blend I've had. An example of successful marketing.

Chacom - #3 50g
Spend some time with it...
I didn't like this at first. The tin smelled of sour chewing tobacco and beyond that not much else. Maybe a very faint whisper of coconut. I didn't smell vanilla or bourbon. I also didn't detect much room note. But I kept circling back to it because on paper, it should have been right up my alley. Glad I did. It took about a week before I figured out that I needed to use a non-filter pipe with a bigger bowl (more capacity). Also, I found that taking it cool and slow and "sipping" as I do for some aromatics just didn't work. Once I started "puffing" it quite a bit and letting it burn hotter - the taste, smell, and aroma really opened up. The room note became detectable while smoking and is very pleasant. I get the vanilla and bourbon now, along with a bit of coconut, maple, or maybe marshmallow/smores. I also found that as I smoked through the tin and the tobacco began to dry out, it behaved even better. I'm not normally a "let it dry out" guy with aromatics - but with this one I would recommend it. Overall, it's a very enjoyable tobacco that has become one of my favorites.

Lane Limited - Hazelnut
Not bad. Not great.
It's not bad., but it's not great. I don't detect any Hazelnut aroma or taste. Just rather plain. If you had a bag of Captain Black that was getting low you could mix this in with it as a filler and never know the difference.

Davidoff - Danish Mixture 50g
Pleasant and Light
High quality product that is pleasant and very light in aroma. I detect cocoa in the tin. I normally prefer something with more topping but this is a very good "middle of the road" aromatic that others will enjoy.

Cornell & Diehl - Apricots and Cream
Chocolate cake?
To me the tin/bag smelled like a fresh chocolate cake right out of the oven. Not hot cocoa or a chocolate candy bar - fresh chocolate cake. Not yet frosted. I guess people smell things differently. Regardless, it's a very smooth and pleasant smoke. Yes it's wet bla bla bla. But it's good. I think I prefer this over BCA. For some reason I want to try mixing this with some Carter Hall.

McLintock - Black Cherry 50g
Not What You Expected
I bought this since it's a sibling to Holger Danske Black and Bourbon. Like B&B, it's a high quality product with both light and dark bits of leaf and a very pleasant tin note. However, this is not your standard cherry blend. It takes a few bowls (possibly a full tin) to figure it out, but once you do it's great. The cherry is very natural and not candied. Some descriptions of this blend also mention notes of coffee and whiskey. What I get are notes of fresh split hardwood - elm or oak perhaps. If you've ever cut firewood with your dad or Grandpa on a crisp fall day you'll know what I'm talking about. For something just off the beaten path, give it a try. This is now in my regular rotation.

Captain Black - Cherry 1.5oz
Very Cherry
This smells like the cherry old timers smoked. Very distinct, very noticeable. So much so that you may need to keep the pouch in a zip lock bag. That may not appeal to some, but I prefer a bold flavor/smell as opposed to something subtle.

Lane Limited - 1-Q
Safe Bet
This is a safe bet. While not exactly like Captain Black Original, the differences are minimal.

Planta - Anno MMX (After Dinner Mixture)
Not much happening...
Based on the description and the fact it is a Planta blend, I was expecting something along the lines of Holger Danske Black & Bourbon. Instead, this was very plain and blah. No bag aroma, no room note, no reason to try it again.

Lane Limited - BCA
Smooth
Very smooth with a soft and pleasant room note. If you've ever had anything by Lane that has Black Cavendish in it you'll recognize it right away.

Planta - Anno MMXV (Brazilian Mixture)
Nice & Subtle
Bought this on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Subtle scent of lime and something else (mint?) in the bag , and the lime weaves in and out while smoking. First time trying Brazil leaf, reminds me of a smooth Burley. Will make a great summer blend to pair with a plate of tacos.

Half and Half - Half and Half 1.5oz
What Grandpa Smoked
This is the only tobacco my Grandpa smoked in his Dr. Grabows. The aroma is pure nostalgia. I find that I enjoy this best in smaller pipes, and sometimes I'll mix it with a cherry blend.

Lane Limited - Black Raspberry
Wild Raspberries
The pouch smells exactly like a fresh picked bucket of black raspberries from the woods. The smoke is very mild, and the room note is very pleasant and noticeable.

Edward G. Robinson - Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend 1.5oz
"Now speaks the rat that would be my ears"
12/16/22 Revisiting this nostalgia blend, and glad I did. The first time I tried it I didn't care for it. The initial tin smelled of spoiled fruit that had been sitting in a damp root cellar for a month. Smoked well, but it was all I could do to get through a bowl. Yuck. On this my second foray, the tin smells sweetly of plum. If someone were to describe it as grape - I could buy that as well. But it's definitely plum. Very smooth smoke with a comfortable room note associated with codger blends. After the initial plum burns off the Latakia (as a condiment) starts to come through and stays until burned down to a nice white ash. Anyone who likes old time blends like Spilman Mixture or the Iwan Ries blends will surely enjoy it.

Holger Danske - Black and Bourbon 50g
Viking Ship
Anything with a Viking Ship on the label better be good, right? The tin note is incredible, and one of my new favorites. It reminds me of a high end box of mixed chocolates with hints of black raspberry and dark cherry liqueurs. I don't smell the bourbon, but it's still amazing. Smooth enjoyable smoke with no tongue bite and a unique and equally great room note. My first tin was rather moist, the second tin a bit drier. Both burned well once lit.

Cornell & Diehl - Corn Cob Pipe and A Button Nose 2oz
It's like Prince Albert
I didn't notice much tin note, taste, or room note as others have reviewed. Just a very faint hint of cocoa but not any more than Prince Albert. If you like Prince Albert, you'll probably enjoy this.

Mac Baren - Vanilla Flake 1.75oz
Passed this on to a friend
Not much tin note, and not much vanilla detected while smoking. The flake cut wasn't worth the effort. Prefer Captain Black Original over this.
