Seattle Pipe Club - Christmas Spirit 2022 4oz
OH MY GOD
I am not the biggest plum pudding fan. But this is phenomenal. Something about the cognac essence infused from the barrel transformed the entire blend into something beyond words can express. The aroma, is damn near spiritual, and the flavor is simultaneously robust and delicate. It burns cool, no bite, smokey, sweet, and it eerily perfect. I had been unable to enjoy my pipe for about a month and was losing my interest in the hobby, this totally reinvigorated my love of pipes and pipe tobacco. If I could smoke this exclusively for life I would. It’s absolutely magnificent. 5 star ⭐️ but my finger wouldn’t register above 4.5 😂
Cornell & Diehl - Shelbyton
Tawny port goodness
I was intrigued by this blend because of two words I saw in the description (1) TAWNY and (2) PORT. I’m a firm believer that nothing pairs better with pipe tobacco than A fine tawny port. This blend is very good, it gives you a rich creamy smoke that burns down to a fine ash. It’s not overpowering and there’s a nice level of nicotine. The tawny port adds a nice note to the bag, very subtle undertone to the smoke that gives the flavor of raisins and stone fruit. Frankly, I wish the tawny port was more pronounced in the flavoring.
Cornell & Diehl - Dark Cherry Cavendish
I am not going to blow any smoke up your behind. This is a cherry Cavendish. It’s not trying to be fancy it’s not trying to be special it is what it is. But, the one thing it is not, is cloyingly sweet. Most cherry blends are over-the-top pungent, goopy And often loaded with a chemical sort of aftertaste. This actually tastes like dark cherry fruit and it’s very good. Is it strong? yes. Is it over the top strong like most drugstore cherry flavored pipe tobacco? Absolutely not. It’s strong without being too strong. But the amazing thing is the flavor actually is Real fruit. If you like cherry buy a pound of this stick it in mylar vacuum seal it stick it in your cellar.
Cornell & Diehl - Palmetto Balkan 8oz
The aroma, the taste, the blend. All magnificently balanced to do their job. To Transport you to the low country in summer. Humidity, mosquitoes, iced bourbon based drinks, whole hog bbq, friends and family. This is subtle yet refined Balkan that harkens to the classic Balkan blends that many of us love. This is a triumph. For all of you complaining; stop. Be grateful that some folks are pushing the envelope to create amazing new blends. Yes, it’s marketing, but it’s also the blenders having fun. This is a fantastic product.
Cornell & Diehl - Eight State Burley 2oz
NO. Not good
I am a fan of Cornell & Diehl and I love great pipe tobacco. The original 8 state burley was simply not pleasant. I am not against burley, I like Prince Albert, Briar Fox, Haunted Bookshop etc. but something about this blend was exceptionally off-putting. Will I buy the 2022 release NO. Why? Because 8 State Burley had the flavor of sweaty gym socks left to mildew in bayou, low tide swamp water filled with gator swill. Respectfully.
Cornell & Diehl - Sun Bear Black Locust 2oz
STOP CRYING and THIS IS GREAT
Set your alarm for midnight east coast time and maybe you’ll be able to get some of whatever new release comes out 🍻🍻🍻. I have one can unopened of 2020 sunbear. I have never tried this stuff. But people seem to go batty over it. I opted to use a fresh unused Missouri Meerschaum freedom ring bent Rob Roy. (Half bowl with filter, then took it out because I forgot it was in there lol) 1) tin note 10/10. Amazing! deep raisins, rich honey, pull a little out place in your palm and breath in, you will smell the tequila. Wow. 2) it is moist, not goopy, but is moist. Rub it out and dry a little. Or stuff it and puff it 😂 3) room note is subtle and pleasant 4) ok. Here is the rule. SIP on this. Do not chooch it like a train. If you puff quick it tastes like old school camel unfiltered. If you slowly sip you can pull the components if you think about it. It’s mild and subtle; but it is clean and pleasant….. but only if you sip. Charge through the bowl like a dragon on a rampage and it is not enjoyable. I will happily smoke more of this and if it is similar to previous years I will buy annually. It’s really nice. There is better stuff out there, but this is really good.
Cornell & Diehl - King Cake 2oz
Look. This stuff is delicious. If you smoke a pipe and like great quality tasty tobacco than buy some. It’s delicious. I’m not doing the whole explanation of nuances in flavor here. This is an aromatic that doesn’t seem like an aromatic.... a VaPa Aromatic hybrid. If you don’t dig it. Then more for me lol
Sutliff - SPS-2011 Peach Cobbler
Really love your peaches wanna shake your tree
Peach peach peach peach peach peach AWESOME. In the mood for a happy smiling face of an aromatic? Then look no further. Room note. Tin note. Smoke structure. Burn quality. Flavor. Everything!!! This is damn good stuff. You could smoke it all day long......and in fact I DID. Nice work Sutliff
Sutliff - J12 - Chocolate Truffle
Where’s the chocolate
I bought a pound during the free canister promotion. Look. It’s a fine smoke, but I was actually looking for a chocolate aromatic. This had zero chocolate flavor. None. Either I caught “The Rona” and my taste buds have died or this is seriously lacking something. Sutliff is generally on point with its aromatics, this is sadly not one of them. (Tin note a solid 5 stars; smoke structure is chewy and thick. 5 stars; taste and room note 5 stars; BUT THERE IS NO CHOCOLATE..... so 1.5 ⭐️
Cornell & Diehl - Bow-Legged Bear 2oz
I am not sure
So. This is either superb or tastes like whatever was making that poor bear bow legged. I am leaning towards the latter. This may need several years of cellaring. It seems as if it is not certain what it wants to be when it grows up; a polite English bear like paddington or a surly old jungle bum like Baloo. I can’t really identify any particular component as taking the stage, but rather than a harmonious blend, it’s more akin to the royal rumble, every man for themselves. Yes indeed. I think like the review from JohnLoewer 12 years in the bottom of the Gun Safe may do this Bear a little good.
Cornell & Diehl - Haunted Bookshop 2oz
I ordered this blend because the late great John Harden (Matches860) of YouTube pipe smoking fame said it was a great introduction to Burley. Well if this is the definitive Burley Blend then I am a Burley man. Smokey but subtle, chocolate and Coffee. It is so perfect in every way that I have dedicated a pipe strictly to it and other Burleys. Fine stuff! Order a Tin, pack the Friday Savinelli and watch matches860 videos on YouTube and keep John’s legacy going strong.
Captain Earle's - Mystic Blend 2oz
Practically Perfect in every Possible Way
In all sincerity, if you are looking for a straightforward mellow English Blend that you can smoke all day long, this is it. The tin note reflects a bygone era true to its namesake. I bought this blend because I use to live on the Mystic River staring at the Mystic Seaport, and for some reason this blend magically transports me back SouthEastern CT. The Latakia/Orientals are right up front but we’ll rounded out by the Virginias.....then right in the back of your taste buds you get a definite tang of the Perique. This is the fastest I have ever finished a tin. Just ordered 3 more tins.
Warped - The Haunting 2oz
Hot Mess :(
NOPE. Look I love cigars, I have a cellar of about 200 of fantastic quality, including Warped. But I have no interest of putting a cigar into my pipe. All I could taste was very very strong cigar leaf. The other components didn’t mellow anything out or round out the flavor. I bought 3 tins. Putting everything into the cellar for about 5 years and hope it all mellows out, because this was so unpleasant I immediately scrubbed my pipe with everclear to try and prevent any ghosting.
Cornell & Diehl - Cross-Eyed Cricket 8oz
I have been smoking a pipe for a while now. But just as any hobby I embark upon I go well over the top; for example I did not train to run a marathon, I trained to run a 100 mile ultramarathon. With that said, I have been sampling as many different types of pipe tobacco as humanly possible, searching for that PERFECT everyday smoke that I can sink my claws into. I dont know if THIS is THAT pipe tobacco, but it is certainly in the lead right now. The tin note is delicious, packs easy, burns well, tastes sweet but not cloyingly sweet; smell is pleasant and inviting. honestly I found myself packing 3 bowls in a row while on a 2.5 hour long conference call for work. C&D I have yet to try anything you have blended that gave me pause. great stuff!! UPDATE. I have 3 pounds cellared. It’s awesome.
