A smooth, bright Virginia flake of famous refinement and antiquarian origins, Capstan Yellow, like its medium-bodied Blue sibling, was originally created by W.D. & H.O. Wills of Bristol during the latter half of the 19th century. Suffice to say, it's no accident this smoking mixture has survived as a favorite to so many generations.
Without any doubt this is one of the best flakes on the market. Won't bite and a lovely leaf first thing in the morning. At least that's been my experience.

I'm a huge fan of Capstan Original Navy Cut Flake (the Blue tin), but I alternate between that and Capstan's Gold Navy Cut Flake (the Yellow tin). Actually, what happens is that I end up opening a can of Gold when I open a tin of Blue and find it's n... Read Moreot matured enough to my liking and have to jar it and wait. Capstan Gold is much more ready-reliable; rarely wavering in aroma, flavor, perfect dryness, and availability. As I said in my review of Capstan Blue, it can be inconsistent, but Gold is very consistent. At least that's been my experience, yours may be different. The flakes are thin, easily rubbed-out or folded for loading. The moisture levels are always near perfect for lighting. As with any flake, it can be a tad harder than a ribbon cut to get lit, but once lit you are in for a good long smoke. I fold and twist/stuff my Capstan flakes and average 45 minutes per flake in a medium sized bowl (usually a Billiard). The flavors are fantastic: bright Virginias (hay, grass, tea) but are a solid medium strength smoke (with Capstan Blue being a bit fuller strength). For those of you familiar to Orlik Golden Sliced, the flakes are so similar it's uncanny, but OGS is a VA/Perique and Capstan Gold claims to be a pure Virginia flake. Overall, both Capstan Blue and Gold are top-notch tobaccos everyone should try. It bares repeating that the Flakes and Ready-Rubbed versions differ greatly (not sure why) and I am reviewing the Flake version specifically. Enjoy. Read Less
This is really high quality leaf done right. It's a little brighter than the blue in flavor and doesn't really have the malty note. It does have a mild natural lemongrass note and a delicious natural virginia sweetness. Very pure and clean tasting to... Read More the last draw at the end of the bowl. For me its good, but not too much. It has a likely bakery smell, and yes, its smooth, but a litlle bit smoky. Has good flavour, sweet, but the smoky sensation is always there...dont say nothing to me, i prefer others, even this is good.
This is a very respectful flake: respectful to the smoker. It's cut beautifully, and one flake fits perfectly into a standard bowl. Rubbed out seems to offer the most flavour. High, grassy bouquet; cool, mellow smoke. I liked it quite a bit; however ... Read MoreI found it a bit "one note". I think my preference for a Virginia flake will stay with MacBaren's Virginia Flake; even though it has a tendency to bite, it resonates with me a lot more. After smoking the blue version flake I moved on to the yellow. Most everything said about the blue can be said about the yellow with regard to presentation, handling, smoking characteristics... Read More, etc. It is a bit lighter in the tin than the blue and its tin aroma is more on the bright side, but not extremely so. Some have said it reminds them of Orlik's Golden Sliced, but I would disagree on that one. For starters, this Capstan flake was darker in color and it lacked that characteristic tin note of GS; nor was there any present in the taste thankfully, as I quickly grew tired of that in the GS. Overall, the yellow-tinned flake was less spicy and not quite as full-tasting as the blue, however, it is still one superior smoke. Like the blue, I can smoke this one every day if need be. However, between the two, I find myself reaching for the blue more often as I enjoy that spiciness I described in the blue and the slightly fuller body to the smoke. As with the blue, a stellar, 5 star smoke. Hat's off to Mac Baren as both will be in my weekly rotation for sure and in my favorites category as well. Read Less
