s heavily fired, which is more creosote and cedar essence rather than musty, woody creamy sweet. This isn’t a linear Pirate Kake kind of Lat bomb. As a matter of fact, with only 50% Latakia I wouldn't call this a Lat Bomb but rather a rich and bold English in the vein of the older and now extinct English mixtures. I really like this... but then I’m partial to Latakia and so I give most Latakia forward mixtures a star automatically. There's also a bit of burley and Perique in this too but in such small doses that it doesn't distract from the main components. It isn’t refined and contemplative, but rather raw or rustic, as are most C&D mixtures. It’s a good change of pace to Constellation, which I smoke every/all day. While I like the taste of sun-cured orientals, they clash with my PH and nip, which is why I absolutely love Constellation (no sun-cured). Nicotine level is 2 out of 5. Read Less

e latakia is certainly to the forefront here and everything else is only to offer support. The latakia itself is more of the smoky tasting type of Cyprian that reminds me of pine smoke and creosote more than oak smoke and herbs/spices and does not really have much sweetness. Honestly I prefer the sweeter varieties of latakia that have more of an oak/spice flavor but this is a very good blend. There is a good bit of nicotine here too but it is never too much for me, in fact I find it very relaxing at night. Works great for DGT also. Be warned though you will taste this for hours after smoking and it might possibly be a bit much for a newer english smoker. I can't quite make this a daily smoke but it will be welcome in my rotation. Very well done. I will likely reorder and cellar a bit of this. It will likely make a 5 star with a few years age. If you like a stout latakia forward blend that is not sweet you might really enjoy this. Read Less

I smoked this blend when it was more like a broken rubbed out flake that was pressed into a cake,now ribbon cut and pressed made it in my opinion weaker it also burns faster to bad because as little as two years ago was a 5 star classic.

re tasting these things, but the tobacco, the odors, and the tastes that are singing in my ears are as real as anything else. There is Perique here too, though it gets no billing in the credits. Overall, this blend is a little hard to light, but once done there’s fire in the hole, along with a salt-and-pepper ash that belongs on a volcanic beach. If I ever see and taste some of the places again that are here in the smoke, I hope I’ll have a pipe of this mix with me, as sweet and as sour as it is. Excellent tobacco indeed. Not sure what Carlos is talking about down there, but C&D make this and they use nothing but high grade VAs. All palettes are different, but if you love latakia, try this. You can't go wrong.

it more latakia. It's fascinating what will happen with just the smallest tweaks to the recipe. Ten Russians is very good, I have almost a pound in the cellar and I will grab another pound for later. The thing that disappoints me however is that all these "separate" companies are all really the same company. Laudisi (i.e., Smokingpipes) owns and/or controls most of the big ones: C&D, G.L. Pease, Two Friends, Captain Earle's, Castello, Briar Works are ALL labels of the same company, and even Sutliff/Mac Baren are subsidiaries or partners. There are companies which have been around for hundreds of years and, hence, are much older than Laudisi and not outright owned by them, such as the two Gawith companies and Peterson just to name three, but Laudisi still maintains monopolistic distribution agreements with most of them. Consequently, all these companies source from the same farms, the same tobaccos, and use the same four master blenders, so they all taste the same. And this makes sense because they ARE exactly the same. There is no choice, only the illusion of choice. You like Captain Earle better than Drucquer & Sons? Wrong, they're exactly the same. Same tobaccos from the same farms blended by the same blend masters. I spend about a thousand dollars a month here, so obviously it's not that bad, but the whole illusion of choice thing is very frustrating. Of course I'll probably keep buying, but I will also keep wishing there were more genuine variety and competition. 4.5 stars because the blend is nice and they used less of the chemical sugary topping. very huge fan of the Captain Earle lineup so I was happy to get my tin in the mail. It is definitely stronger than the other blends in this line but it is supposed to be. Upon opening the tin I found the usual Captain Earle crumble cake all nice and handsome. That is one thing I really like about Captain Earle blends is that they are all cakes. The break apart easy, rub out and pack easy. Lighting was no problem and had only a couple of relights. Probably won't make many friends that are non pipe smokers when you light this one up unless you are around a fire pit. Ten Russians is not for a pipe smoker just starting their journey but for the seasoned pipe smoker could be repeated during the day. Read Less

There is the smoothness - (black cavendish) sweetness (Virginia) and fullness (Turkish?), it’s just that they are playing the part of structure but not even hinting at their own flavor. Usually I would say this means a lack of balance, but strangely I want to give this blend a pass because I find it has its own excessive kind of charm. You Know like an actor who always chews scenery, seems to like himself too much, and you want to hate him but you just can't. He gets away with it because of CHARM. Also, of all the high NIC hitters (Irish Flake, Nightcap, 1792, Brown and Black ropes) this seem to be the smoothest on the tongue, no bite. I do recommend not drying it out as much as others, smoke it moist and don't pack it as much either. And do yourself a favor, use a small pipe and go slowly. s clean and dry but is not crispy in the least. The interesting thing is that I tasted cigar in it despite the fact this blend harbors no cigar tobacco. The Latakia hides in the background seeming to give the orientals a bit of a dirty taste. Where the dirty taste can be enjoyable in some blend I personally don't feel that it works exceptionally well in this one. The taste and mouth feel is distinct but I feel the room note on this one would leave the air smelling if stale cigar smoke if allowed to linger. Read Less
