Newminster: No.80 Norway Pipe Cut Pipe Tobacco

Bag note is very light but burley forward. Tobacco needs to be pulled apart and allowed some dry time before packing but the cut is easy to pack in about any method you prefer. Initial light is very burley-ish, mild and very reminiscent of some older OTC blends (I.E. Half&Half). False lights rises and is easily tamped down for a quick and easy relight. the first 1/4 bowl is very mild and does not offer much by way of complexity. As the bowl progresses the burley gives a little nuttiness but there is not by way of sweetness from the Va., the Orientals had very little to add other than a very light tickle to the tongue and sinus. I was a little disappointed with my pairing of black coffee, the blend did not offer the strength and complexity to fit well with the stronger drink and the coffee tended to overpower the smoke. Ice water seemed to be a better palate cleanser for tasting the smoke. Overall the blend is pleasant enough and gets better as the bowl progresses but in my opinion lacks the complexity and natural sweetness that i look for in a blend. This is a "stuff and go" type blend, very easy to smoke while your mind and hands are occupied elsewhere as compared to blends that are more complex which beg you to sit and contemplate....Read More

It burns very well. That's the best thing I can say. The taste is one note. And it's not a good note. I enjoyed the Oriental Pipe Cut but this one, not so much.

EDIT: It improves with a bit of time. If it's smoked slow and in the proper pipe, the Orientals shine through. If it burns hot it's harsh. I use a tall poker and sip it. Like that it's a decent smoke. Not complex or interesting but not bad....Read More

Very mild tobacco that smokes cool. Nice smooth taste with a very slight floral note. Easy to pack. Reminds me of Stokkybe Norwegian but a little better.

This is a really nice well balanced tobacco. It's a mild, pleasant smoke, with just the flavors of the tobacco, giving a cool smoke and even taste throughout the bowl.

I was at my pipe smoking club and someone brought this tobacco to share. The pouch note was really nice so I filled up my Peterson Standard pipe with this tobacco and lit it up. This is a straight forward tobacco. Very well balanced. The flavours of each come through softly. Not harsh at all. The smell reminds of my grandfathers and my Dad having a pipe going. Enjoyed it in a Meershaum, briar and especially a cob. Get some and take it for a test drive. Just Sayin.

I enjoyed this. It was a nice mellow smoke, very smooth and bite free. No problems with moisture or bite. I was reminded of Norwegian Blend, but this seemed a touch smoother and more mild.

The smell was pleasant; nothing but good,mild tobacco aroma. It packed, lit, burned, and smoked beautifully. And it was mild. Very very mild. For my taste, almost too mild. A cigarette smoker would have no problem rolling and smoking this one. But I wish I'd had this back in the day when I first started smoking a pipe seriously, instead of those awful, sweet, tongue-burning aromatics I inevitably chose. A good solid blend. Nice tin note, mild room note, good taste. It can bite, take it easy and it's mellow. The Turk tickles the tongue on a slow draw, nice! It seems dry but packs and burns good. Lightly tamp often. I like it.
