In addition to their myriad of world class "standard" cigars, CAO also produces some of the best tasting (and best selling) premium flavored cigarillos on the planet. This tinned blend is a duplicate of their best-selling "Moontrance" Cigarillos (only quite a bit easier to get into one's pipe than the latter). This blend begins with quality Virginia tobaccos that are infused with essences of exotic fruit, vanilla and bourbon extracts and then hit with just a dash of Hawaiian honey.
Sometimes I wonder what other people are smoking when they write reviews, because my experience is often just completely different. It makes me suspect that manufacturers plant great reviews themselves just to sell more product. This Moontrance is a ... Read Morecase in point. Where other reviewers get the result of 'great aromatic' etc I really don't know. What this is is basically cigar leaf stuck in a tin and called pipe tobacco.
When I opened the tin I was greeted with a strange chemical smell. Some people describe it as 'oaky' or 'mossy'. I didn't get any of that, just a strange chemically laden smell with no particular identification. It was wet so I left it a day to dry out. On smoking it smells and tastes just like a cigar. No aromatic qualities at all. Okay, perhaps the slightest hint of vanilla which disappeared in a couple of minutes. The smoke is like cigar smoke, the smell and taste are cigar, and even the ash is like cigar ash. I didn't know anything about CAO - I bought this tobacco based on reviews. I'm not surprised at all to now find that CAO is a cigar maker, because that's basically what this tobacco is. I feel cheated because if I want to smoke a cigar I'll buy one. This tin should really say 'crushed cigar tobacco in a tin' because that appears to be what it is.
When I smoke my pipe I'm looking for a 'pipe experience' not a cigar. Read Less
I feel obliged to tell you that I've only ever had one tin of Moontrance, so keep that in mind. It was touted by many reviews and blogs making it seem like a favorite of the CAO pipe tobaccos. I had already tried Eileen's Dream and Moontrance seemed ... Read Morelike the next logical choice. All tobaccos have a peak age and sometimes it's hard to know when that is. Unless the manufacturer specifically says when that is, I assume it is meant to be ready when I receive it. That's just not always the case. The Moontrance tin I had was not ready. The cut is a coarse ribbon cut, that packed okay. It took several strikes to get the char going because it was too moist. I recommend drying this one. From the description, the flavor was nothing like I expected. In fact, it was awful with only hints at something there worth exploring more. I kept coming back to it hoping to find what others loved so much and eventually (about 6 months later) all of a sudden it had changed drastically. It was like a different blend altogether. By now the flavor reminded me of Moon Pies, complete with creamy marshmallow, chocolate and graham cracker (could this somehow be related to naming this tobacco?). That's not really what the description calls for, but it was good. It had metamorphosed to become a nice aromatic. Eventually I liked Moontrance, I just wish someone had given fair warning how much time it needed. I imagine some might just toss the tin rather than allow for it to mature, which is sad since it turned out pretty good. Maybe it was just the tin I had; perhaps your tin will be great from the start. Either way, you should find enjoyment at some point. When it's ready, it is definitely worth smoking if confectionery tobaccos appeal to you. Hope this helps. Read Less

After smoking some of the world's best pipe tobacco blends in the months since trying this, I came back to this and couldn't open the tin without being put-off by the smell. To echo my title, it smells and tastes like a bad batch of Lane 1-Q. If you ... Read Morecompare this side-by-side with 1-Q, you'll instantly see what I'm talking about. The aromas and smells are similar to 1-Q but not in a good way at all. Worse still, it doesn't burn well at all, and requires almost constant relights despite drying or not (and everything in between). As with all CAO blends it shows up too wet as well. I'd certainly choose ANY good ol' fashioned drug store/OTC blend over this, which is basically cheap tobacco in a fancy tin. If you're thinking of getting this, just get Lane 1-Q instead—you'll be happy you did. Read Less

This tobacco was a fun one to try as I smoke a pipe regularly but will occasionally smoke a cigar as well. Read Moreentical to the cigars that I so enjoy, smelling heavily of vanilla, raisins, and honey. Taste however, is a completely different experience altogether. I am glad that I tried this one in both forms as they are completely different experiences for me at least. I did not think that this one tasted anything like a cigar which was surprising to me as that is what I had expected. The tobacco was easy to pack, light, and burned well through to the end of the bowl. The taste was much milder than expected especially for those that have had the cigar and after smelling such a strong tin note. Upon lighting this tobacco one is greeted with the mild taste of vanilla with hints of sweet honey and a faint fruit-like taste which stay with you through to the end of the smoke. The room note was not as strong as I would have believed that it was going to be after smelling the tin note, and according to the wife, had a mild smell but definitely had the aroma of honey and vanilla. Overall, I was surprised at how mild this blend is after having the cigar, but was pleasantly surprised at how well this worked for me in my pipe. Definitely a good aromatic to keep around for those days when you just crave something slightly sweet. Read Less

The aroma is both startling and pleasant...enough to attract a non-pipe smoker who commented it smelled very vanilla. Ribbon/shag depending on your view. Not too wet, not too dry, it actually seems quite perfect for smoking. I packed an old Canadian style French briar, packing it a bit firmer than normal to see if it would close the draw too much. It still drew perfectly. Initial char did not expand the mixture very much. Gave it a moment and just lit it as usual. The first thing I noticed was the original smell of the unlit tobacco translated very well indeed to the smoke. Truly a first for me and I am not an aromatic fan. The room note (as commented on by a non-smoker) "Wow, that smells strong, but better than the normal *&%%# you smoke. I can live with that." Trust me, that is glowing praise from that person. Now this won't become my standard fare, but it does have the honor of becoming the first flavored smoke that I intend to keep on hand for a "treat" when the normal boredom sets in. Read Less
