Many fans of the blends of C&D's long time collaborator, the late Bob Runowski, hail Morley's Best as his finest creation. An English blend of three Burleys — white, cubed, & rough cut — as well as Virginia flake and Cyprian Latakia; this cool and flavorful smoke is a perennial best seller.

I actually have a very small amount of the old Blue Boar. My grandfather smoked this, and when he passed in 1998, I discovered some opened and unopened tobaccos in his home. Not sure when the tobacco dates from as I do not know when Blue Boar was di... Read Morescontinued, but I remember that it was his regular smoke in the evenings when I was a wee lad in the 1960s. This was the tobacco that Bob Runowski sought to recreate with Morley's Best. First a review of Morley's Best on its own and then a trip down memory lane. Burleys are the stars in this blend, with nutty, yet spicy mix of flavors that hints at sulphured molasses. The white Burley can be a bit sharp at times, which highlights the importance of sipping this tobacco - for that and to enjoy the complexity that the other leafs offer. Burleys predominate through the first light to the first third of the bowl, and then the Latakia adds a smokey and woody sweetness to the mix, secondary in its role but more prominent as you puff through the half bowl. For me, the Virginias add a bit more sweetness to the sulfur molasses mix in the last half of the bowl. Not sure about the tin option, but the bulk option comes a bit dry, which is what I prefer. To rehydrate a little, I just fill the pipe and blow through the pipe some hot air and then I am ready to light. The nic-hit is mild, and this could be an all-day smoke, the only caveat being that it is best enjoyed at a slow sip. MB always burns clean to the bottom of the bowl with little moisture and a nice gray ash to swirl in the once-cooled bowl to add to the cake. It is one of my favorites in the rotation at any time of day. The comparisons to Blue Boar are obviously skewed by vagaries of time and aging, but the few times I have smoked them side by side, I find that Morley's Best is a bit more complex from beginning to end, again undoubtedly influenced by the age of the Blue Boar and its necessary rehydration. Having said that, Bob Runkowski (R.I.P) did an excellent job in recreating this classic from years gone by. I keep my Morley's Best in the old Blue Boar container, because you just cannot match that big blue boar staring at you from the front! Highly recommended. Read Less

I used to like English blends exclusively but then as I got older I just couldn't palate latakia in large amounts so I switched to American English blends to satisfy my evening smoke. Now i never smoked blue boar as it was long gone before i picked up a pipe, but the first time i lit this up was at dad's and he said it smelled just like he remembered blue boar. I'm not a huge Burley smoker, but I do enjoy Burley blends if they are exceptional and well blended. Morley's Best is a highlight for me. I love Latakia mixtures, which is why I initially tried this, but where Latakia would normally dominate a blend,... Read More here it is merely a condiment that mellows the sharper Burleys. The Virginia too is relatively low in the mix, providing a sweet character to round the blend. I am glad they use a VA broken flake here, I think it helps this blend be the slow-burner that it is. C&D uses some of the best Burley I've had. Morley's Best has three different cuts all strutting their stuff. It has a hearty nuttiness, a clean waxy-tooth feel, never bites, and packs and lights splendidly. Each bowl is so well behaved and flavorful. Some Burley blends remind me too much of cigarette smoke which turns me off, but I get very little of that with Morley's Best unless I let it dry out too much. Unfortunately, I never tried Blue Boar and I don't really know much about it. I've read that Blue Boar additionally had Turkish orientals and figure it wouldn't be hard to add some C&D Izmir (in small amounts) and give that a try if Morley's Best isn't true enough for Blue Boar fans? Just a suggestion. Cornell & Diehl never ceases to amaze me with quality tobaccos blended in so many unique and delicious ways. Among them all, Morley's Best manages to stand out. Enjoy. Read Less

Being a fan of Haunted Bookshop, I was curious to see if Morley’s could top it when I packed my first bowl of this Burley, Virginia, and Latakia blend - for sure an ‘American English’, and oh what a delight it is! If you’re a Burley fan and want something different and amazing, here it is. This and HB are my favorite Runowski blends. I’ll be buying this by the pound, curious to see how DGT ups the ante.
