For their Kajun Kake, the folks at C&D start with naturally sweet red Virginias and add just the right touch of everyone's favorite Cajun spice, Louisiana Perique. They then press it into an old fashioned crumble cake which deepens and marries the flavors!
Cue that old Gervais Matte and the Branch Playboys music and sit for a minute cher. This blend really does an excellent job of highlighting that Louisiana leaf us Va-Per smokers love. The red virginias provide just enough sweetness fresh to offset th... Read Moree musty slight sour notes of the perique. The unflavored black cavendish provides a smooth mouthfeel and just tops this stuff off in the right way. I can tell with a year of age the perique will strengthen up the blend and the virginias will sweeten everything else up further to make a more bold and defined smoke with the same smoothness that i have not yet found in many blends . The mouthfeel is crreamy, I love it. Good any time of the day and needs negligable dry time. Breaks up and packs easy. Leaves very little moisture in the bowl. I wouldn't compare it to Chenet's cake as that stuff is definately perique foward. This one is not. This one uses the other leaf to highlight the subtelties of that black fermented leaf and brings it out in a good ol Cajun waltz. One of the best Va-Pers I have come across. Read Less

Virginia is the backbone and the healthy dose of Perique is fruity, spicy and a little peppery. The Black Cavendish mellows this salubrious blend and donates softness and sweetness. If you haven't tried this yet, you really need too. This is easily one of my favourites to smoke.
Nice, little bit of kick, not heavy, and a creamy smoke with a slight sweetness to it.
I always have a few cans hiding around.
If you have the option, age it for at least a year. You will find a blend with flavors across the spectrum: mustiness, dry red wine, mushroom, but also natural sweetness and orange rind. Smoke it slowly; it's a Va/per.

I've tried a lot of Va-Per blends and often ponder how many ways can you use these leaves? Quite a lot it seems. For example I enjoy Briar Works Back Down South which is also a Va-Per blend. Cornell and Diehl Kajun Kake is listed to have Red Virginia’s and Louisiana Perique. Right out of the tin it’s a pressed crumble cake which I like to cut slices off and rubs out very easily. Others said they smelled candied cherries and sea water. I didn’t get that at all and sounded disgusting. In fact upon first light I tasted a heavy pepper flavor at first that eventually gave away to a smoother Virginia taste hinting at sweet. Throughout the bowl there was a heavy almost acrid flavor which I typically associate with cigar leaf. I also found that when I sipped slowly there was a bitterness on my tongue and when I sped up my cadence I got a more VaPer sweet flavor. There were familiar flavors in here that at times that made me think of this as escudo combined with Billy Bud or maybe Fillmore. Overall I liked it and wonder what it’ll be like with some age on it. This was one of the very first Vir/Per blends I ever smoked when switching over from aromatics. It is also the blend that started my love for Perique. Another fantastic va/p from C&D. Earthy and spicy with a slap across the face from lady N. Oh you don't like that? Come back to it after a year in the jar and you'll find a more mellow animal with a sweeter, fruitier old timey sort of taste.

The flavor is tasty and medium/full and I can detect the perique from the first light. It gets really peppery around mid bowl but mellows out consistently for the final third and gives a great finish. The Va is subdued often by the perique but does maintain a nice balance and when I taste it I get earthy, bread like notes from it but no real sweetness, which is a very nice contrast to the McClelland va's I also smoke. I'd say there is a more than a good amount of perique in this as it leaves my tongue tasting peppery. Sometimes it almost seems like there are a few black peppercorns in my pipe with the tobacco, but I love pepper so that's fine with me. I have found no bite at all in this blend even if rushed a little but it does smoke better at a reasonable pace and sipped somewhat steadily. Burns down to a powdery grey and white ash and stays lit really well. There is a good bit of nicotine too, I love the way I feel after smoking this.
