From the tip of Virginia, Cornell & Diehl's Pennington Gap is an all-American blend with a Southern accent: nutty Kentucky cube-cut Burley and rich Black Cavendish balance the unique aroma and flavor of Louisiana Perique, finished with bourbon for that touch of southern hospitality.
I picked this up on a whim because I generally enjoy C&D blends and I wanted something different. This fit the bill. It's an aromatic but not sickeningly so. It's a bourbon topped perique, burley and black cavendish blend in that order. At fi... Read Morerst light the perique really came through for me. It is quite peppery for the first third of the bowl. Next I caught the nuttiness of the burley. Quite enjoyable. A deep honey sweetness brought up the rear. The tin note was of bourbon (not whiskey but specifically bourbon) and raisins. I would catch hints of both faintly throughout the bowl. Sometimes blends will open up in different ways from bowl to bowl. Each bowl of this was spicy, then nutty, then sweet. I really liked looking forward to the changes. This also burned very well. Not sure if I had a relight the entire tin. I like to have a few aromatics in the rotation for blue moon scenarios and this will become one. A successful perique aromatic blending! I would have loved to give this a slightly higher rating but this smoke had an intense drying effect on my mouth. It didn't burn particularly hot and there was no tongue bite, but it certainly dried the mouth out an odd amount. I always had to have a glass of something cold accompanying Pennington Gap. Make it a Makers rocks and you've got a thematically enjoyable smoke session. Read Less
Tin note actually reminded me of my Grandma's rice pudding and rum raisin sauce. It was one of those cases where I kept reopening the tin/container to just enjoy that note. Unlike many aromatics, the flavor made good on the tin note's promise. Aft... Read Moreer a little drying time, first light delivered some expected sweetness and put a smile on my face. Second (and final) light brought forth some Perique, then the nuttiness of the burley followed as the sweetness of the Cavendish faded slightly, the Perique faded in the second half of the bowl. The Cavendish and Whiskey contributed to a pleasant room note, and received a compliment from my teenagers who invaded the garage as I was enjoying a bowl. Comparisons to GLP Barbary Coast are inevitable. I find Pennington Gap sweeter and less harsh than GLP BC (although with BC, that harshness fades if you jar it for a few months). Pennington Gap gives a nice nic hit, doesn't give me any bite, and leaves very little moisture in the bottom of the bowl. If you like a sweeter blend that delivers much more than the typical aro, give Pennington Gap a try. A fine all-day smoke for me. Five stars. Also, if anyone from C&D marketing/sales is out there, please consider offering this in an 8 oz tin. Thanks. Read Less
Another great offering from C&D. Opening the tin your greated with maybe a sweet raisin and chocolate note. The cube cut easily fills the bowl and packs down nicely for a really even draw and burn. The blend lights nicely with no effort. The room not... Read Moree is sweet and boozey similar to Plum Cake. Notes of caramel and nut get picked up in the side stream. This blend is truly unique. I am not much of an aromatic smoker, but this one hit the spot. This has become one of my favorites over my last few smokes. The nutty burley and the dried fruit of the perique complement each other nicely. There is a hefty dose of the bourbon in the tin note, and just a wisp of that vanilla oaky bourbon flavor o... Read Moren the palate, mostly noticeable in the retrohale. I have really enjoyed mixing it with a bit of 1-Q to amp up that vanilla aroma. My favorite C&D blend I have tried so far. It's been in the jar for about 5 months now, so that may be helping. I found it mediocre and hard to stay lit when I first cracked the tin (though that could be lack of practice, I had only just started pipe smoking.) Read Less
