The Mallard is a smooth Ready Rubbed Flake based on the extraordinarily rich and full-bodied sweet Zambian Virginia that was carefully fermented and matured under pressure. There was no need to add any flavorings to enhance its aroma, and it has found great reception among committed friends of pure natural tobacco and among lovers of flavored pipe mixtures as well. You can look forward to a wonderfully gentle smoke with a perfectly rich and sweet Virginia taste.
Dan tobacco, a venerable old company, seems to make good tobacco in general. The Mellow Mallard is no exception, and behind the Roper's, is my favorite.
This tobacco bills itself (no pun intended) as an all-day smoker. That it is, but for the one pr... Read Moreoblem that seems to haunt all Dan products:
Now a VA isn't supposed to have bite. I think Dan tops them just a little more than they should with...something. Don't get me wrong, this is definitely a natural VA. It's got all the great notes of a VA, turned down a bit. Straw, maybe a lemony citrus, and a wine/honey/caramel sweetness, with not a lot of spice (maybe black pepper?). But I can't smoke this all day because of palate exhaustion. I've tried old tins, new tins, medium tins... it doesn't seem to fade with age. It's certainly not a LOT of bite (just a nip, really), but for me that removes it from the category of true all-dayers. It might be that I am having a reaction to a component that Dan uses (it's possible), but I feel, after smoking many tins of this, that in the end it comes down to quality of the leaf.
In its favor, it is quite as mellow as described, not too sweet, and the cut is FABULOUS. Definitely worth a try, but after this last tin I may have to go hunting (pun intended) again for my all day, no-problem smoke.

This is a mild rubbed-out Virginia flake with a quintessential Va taste: slightly grassy, but not sharp; just enough citrus zest to detonate your salivary glands; and a wine-like sweetness that doesn't mask the tobacco flavor. I'll recommend this the... Read More next time someone asks me to name a benchmark Virginia tobacco. The only knock, IMO, is the price -- but it should be on every Va lover's short list of blends to try. High quality NON-aromatic. Read Less
I bought this recently I'll admit for the tin art. I wanted it for my wall and it sat in my cellar for about 3 months. Popped the tin and it smelled like any Virginia. Opened up the wrapping and noticed to my delight sugar blume here and there across... Read More the top. Yes, the tin says "aromatic", but this is a straight ready-rubbed VA/Bur flake tobacco, and a pretty good one at that. Not as full a smoke as most of my other VA stash (FVF & HOTW, mostly), it is very mellow and smooth, with a pleasant "room note" th... Read Moreat gets approving nods from smokers & non-smokers alike. Does require a bit of drying upon opening, but it's an easy smoke, and I've yet to experience any tongue bite. Admittedly, I mainly bought this for the tin art and it's name.
I am pleasantly surprised. I was worried this would be an "aromatic" due to the labeling on the tin.
It is not at all. A wonderful natural Virginia tobacco.
Upon opening I... Read More was much reminding of Orlik Golden Sliced. Mallard is a tad darker, more brown leaf, and rubbed out a tad more. It is also moister. The tin has a nice aroma of pure leaf. Like fresh straw.
Once lit, again I was reminded of Orlik. As the bowl matured the flavours became sweeter and more complex. A very nice mix of sweetness and smooth complexity, without over working the senses.
A satisfying amount of nicotine, though not overwhelming. Easily inhaled and blown throw the nose. Not really acidic at all, again to my surprise. Light enough to smoke all day, complex enough to satisfy.
Smokes smooth, dry, cool and sweet to the pallet, without any noticable bite. Smokes down to a small dottle, leaving only a nice grey ash. The room note seems pleasant. I received an approving nod from co-workers.
The tin art lured me in. The quality has sold me. I do not see myself buying anymore Orlik. This is a far superior rubbed natural Virginia. Very pleasant. Read Less
