Elizabethan Mixture was originally an old Murray's and Sons blend, which Dunhill had re-created by the master blenders at Orlik, and re-introduced. at least to pipe smokers on the other side of the Atlantic. Like the original, Dunhill's Elizabethan combines pressed, darkened Virginias with a dose of Perique (all ribbon-cut) to create an easy-to-enjoy blend with a tangy character and a bit of pepper spice. And now, after several years of lamented absence, it's once again available here amongst the "rebel colonies".
I seem to go through this stuff at an alarming rate. I just love it. Sweet and spicy in excellent balance. One of the few tobaccos that I can smoke daily and always feel satisfied with. I will truly miss it when it is gone.
Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture is a very good blend, but it is rather different than the catalog description
and tin art would lead one to believe. The tin says, "Dark Virginia Tobacco with
Louisiana Perique." Imagine my surprise to find a substanti... Read Moreal proportion (maybe 25% or more)
of flue-cured yellow Virginia. In fact, the dominant tin note is grass/hay. Not exactly the
characteristic VA/Per expected.
That being said, it is a very nice tobacco blend if smoked properly. It wants to
burn fast and hot, and like most flue-cured light Virginia blends, will deliver a good
tongue bite and little to no flavor when smoked too fast. In addition, the Perique is
one of the sharpest, revealing its own teeth when pushed. But, when smoked slowly, it
delivers a very rewarding flavor. Probably best for smokers who have mastered the gentle
art of smoking yellow Virginias. Read Less

The magnitude of this blends convenience can't go understated. Elizabethan packs, lights, and smokes like a dream. The flavor and nicotine always satisfy me, and to this day I still find myself surprised with the consistency of the delicious flavors and moisture. I consider this blend mild-medium in body, medium in nicotine, and medium in flavor, especially with some age. Speaking of age, Elizabethan doesn't truly shine until it has a solid six months of time in a jar. I empty the contents of one tin into a 16 oz. Mason jar and leave it to age for at least six months. In my experience 50g per pint sized jar is the optimal ratio of tobacco:air for this blend, and it will develop tremendous flavors during this short time. I'm currently running an experiment with two 50g tins in one point jar, and a side by side comparison reveals that there is a big difference in color and (I'm assuming) flavor. The extra oxygen seems to accelerate the process possibly, but I'll add the results here once I crack them both open and taste them. I did not find this blend anywhere near as enjoyable fresh out of the tin as I did with a little age on it, but your results may vary. I will be sad to see Nightcap and Eliz go when Dunhill is discontinued soon, but at least we have been given ample warning and plenty of time to cellar our favorites, unlike McClelland. This was a very smooth and rich blend. It smoked wonderfully in most of my pipes and was just the thing for around lunch time. While It wont be in my regular lineup, it is a fantastic one to crack open as a mid or end of summer treat.

The ribbon cut packs and lights easily and smokes to a fine ash with little if any re-light. I am not sure it would make a good all-day smoke because it is very spicy, but is great smoke for a warm summer day, as well for a nice start to the day on a cool morning. The pepper and spice tend overwhelm a bit if smoked too fast, and it lacks subtlety and complexity for the same reason. Highly recommended for Va/Per smokers but may not be a great blend for an introduction to Va/Pers. For a good comparison, load two bowls - one with this and the other with Russ Ouelette's Anniversary Kake (a great blend for those wanting to break ground in Va/Per territory). As it is a rather fine Ribbon Cut, it has a tendency to overheat. Otherwise good packing and burning conditions. The mixture tastes young, fresh, crispy, slightly unripe and over all light, I should say. Anyhow, this mixture has a rather low aroma profile. It lacks in depth, but may be this is intended. The bright and medium-bright Virginias play the main role. This unusual selection of bright Virginias in combination with Perique make this mixture somehow unique. Generally I prefer dark and matured Virginias with a fuller and wider aroma palette. There is a subtle sweetness that can originate from both, Virginias and/or Perique. Perique is always there, in just about the right amount. More Perique would certainly suffocate the light Virginias. There is still enough of Perique to produce a tingle on my tongue and in my nose when retro-haling. This is the reason why I rate this mixture medium to strong. Without Perique I would rate the Virginias mild.
No doubt, it is a quality mixture that stands out (positively or negatively, that’s up to you to decide) of most other Va/pers with its special character. This makes it interesting. But, it is still not my mixture, it does not fit into my profile. Read Less

Read Moreand grass complemented by the bright look of Golden virginia. Which is predominant in aroma and looks. The blend is cut to perfection - even more than the usual excellent Dunhill cut - and came at perfect moisture. I loaded the bowl which was a breeze and lit it up. It came out interesting, as I couldn't get much of that citrus taste whatsoever, it was richer and darker, but no light virginia or perique. And gradually towards the first third of the bowl the perique rises up to be the star of the show. Peppery, strong and nice, and this comes from someone who's not fond of perique. It remains so consistently till the very near end of the bowl. Dark and rich with a hint of pepper and zesty aroma. then just as I got to the end of the bowl, all this gets muted and the sharp, grassy virginia taste takes over. It is as if I am smoking a straight virginia. I tried 4 different pipes with it and got the same results, so I concluded that this is how it is. It won't make my favourite list for two reasons. One personal and one mechanical. The personal one is, I am fond of dark, rich virginia rather than bright ones, so that last part of the bowl becomes a tad annoying, and the mechanical part is that there is no complement of taste in that last part as well. It is as if the perique has disappeared from the blend. I compared this to one of my favourite VaPers which is Davidoff Flake medallions and I still prefer the medallions as it is more consistent and has aged virginia. But if you're unlike me, and you prefer sharp virginia, then definitely this is a top notch blend with the excellent mechanics of Dunhill tobacco.

Elizabethan is great. The Virginias are sweet and Perique is spicy. It was the first VaPer I ever tried, and I keep coming back. The presentation from the tin requires no drying and burns nice and cool.
