Product: Dunhill Dark Flake 50g
Smoked now three times. Much better with some time to age, although nicer than DUNHILL FLAKE right out of tin. Darker bolder Virginia spectacular with perique perfectly bringing up the light spice. ENJOY! I AM AND WILL BE MY #1 VIRGINIA, WHILE I CAN... Read More

This is a great Virginian Blend. Notes of brown sugar and hay. Still not overly sweet. I highly recommend it, but more so with a year or so of aging. I will miss this one.

First thing i know we all are disgusted by the new roumd tin, it ruins the nice presentation it had in the square tin. But points for using a square paper wrapper to keep the flakes corralled. Nice naturall tobacco flavor, not a sweet virginia but st... Read More
ill has its merits. Taste like old dark fired minus the heavy earthyness.
Good working smoke, doesn't need alot of thought or attention to get a good smoke out of it. All in all i like it but wont break my neck to hoard and cellar any
update: so this has really grown on me, it will be on hand always, best if smoked out of a small bowl, the flavors really pop then. i upgrded my rating from 2 1/2 stars to 31/2 stars Read Less

This blend is now near the top of my list of vapers. I find that it's got more character and body that the normal dunhill flake, which was exactly what I was looking for. It's a great companion to my morning coffee before I start my day, and even a g... Read More
reat lighter smoke in the evening for relaxing. The flakes rub out very nicely, and still burn very well when folded and stuffed. Came out of the tin at the perfect moisture for smoking. Do not sleep on this blend, it is superb. Read Less

I definitely agree with anyone who says that this gets better with age. It's great out of the tin but with some age it is hard to beat.
Top Notch Flavor

Product: Dunhill Dark Flake 50g
From the first light to the bottom of the bowl, I never got a rank taste or an off balance flavor. Naturally sweet, smooth. Retro-hale brings out the best in this tobacco. Will buy more.

This is just a top notch smoke. One of favorite Dunhill blends

I remember the first time I walked into one of the more well known Pittsburgh b&m shops, and as I was discussing pipe tobacco with one of the pipe masters there he was heaping praise upon Dark Flake. It has taken some time, but now I understand ... Read More
why it's so great. Like most Dunhill pipe tobaccos, DF was underwhelming at first. I smoked a couple bowls and thought it tasted decent, if unremarkable, and put it in a jar for about one year. As far as I'm concerned, the only way to truly appreciate a dunhill tobacco is to let it age for at least six months. Preferably a year. The transformation is nothing short of amazing. Deep fruit and sour Perique aromas tantalize with every sniff, but in fact do not disappoint when smoked. Where DF truly shines is from about 1/3 to 1/2 into the pipe and onward. Sweet, fruity, slightly sour, and a touch spicy on the retrohale and tongue. What more can you ask for from a VA/per flake. After the requisite aging time DF is an easy 4.75 for me. It can burn a little hot, and the first half of the bowl isn't as flavorful and exciting, but the payoff is well worth it and dark flake is top to bottom delicious. Mild- medium to medium nicotine. With the slow motion disappearance of Dunhill blends I highly recommend stocking your cellar or trying this now. While you still can. Read Less

opening the flavor really opened up. The blend indeed is true to the name of Dark Flake, as the virginias in this blend have an exceptional dark fruit note. The perique plays more of a support role and brings little spice or pepper. The blend is not complex and may be a bit boring for some. Despite this, the blend is still certainly worth trying. When I first tried this I was not impressed. But with a little jar time it has become stellar. Really deep with lite spice one of Dunhill's better offerings. Great mouthfeel and aftertaste. No bite at all.

role. This is a monologue of tobacco rather than anything else. And that's not a hindrance. It is quite good for what it is. A monotonous, single dimension, virginia flake. It is dark, rich, bready and yeasty in flavour. It is consistent and rich throughout the bowl. From the point you open up the newly designed round tins you are greeted by a deep, aroma of virginia before you are welcomed by a complementing view of dark, well packed flakes with a hint of darker, nearly black perique. And the latter doesn't seem to play much role in the tin aroma and even less role in the flavour palette. As with all Dunhill line, it is at perfect moisture content, though it doesn't harm to give it 2-3 minutes of dry time. It rubs easily and packs well. It burns evenly and consistently till the end of the bowl and leaves little ash and no moisture behind. It is an excellent all day smoke and I can easily see it in my daily rotation provided we can have Dunhill tobaccos stay in the market.

I'm a bit surprised by some of the low reviews. Possibly expecting more Perique?
This isn't, at least in my classifications and true VA/Per blend.

st undetectable. And whatever Perique that is used is a bit of a chameleon - at times of the peppery variety, at other times of the fig/dried fruit variety. Overall a nice balance. As I've reached the end of the first tin, I can smell more of the Perique in the tin note, and slightly more in the smoke. I am not sure of the % of Perique, but I'd imagine it's quite low.
What this is, is a very nice medium to medium full Va flake.
I've always enjoyed Dunhill Flake. This is Dunhill Flakes older brother.
Many of the same profiles, just deeper, richer, bolder.
Burns to a nice white ash sitting atop only a small dottle. Requiring little to no relights and requiring little attention to enjoy.
A quality leaf, and a nice enjoyable Virginia. Dark Flake, at least to my palate, is "very' close to Orlik Golden Sliced or Escudo. Dark Flake is perhaps only slightly bolder than Orlik, and slightly milder than Escudo.
No tongue bite, pleasant after-taste. The flakes are a bit sticky, leading me to believe there's possibly a bit of red Va in it, and definitely confirming the Perique.
Flakes require a bit of time outside the tin to dry out a wee bit, then it folds and smokes quite nicely.
All in all a very enjoyable offering. Though pricey, in my opinion for what it is, it's sufficiently good that I will bite off this price and keep it in my own personal stock.
I have a feeling this would age exceptionally well. Better the Orlik, or Dunhill Flake.
A bit more going on with this flake that the others mentioned, which is time should only improve. Read Less

resting". I've found that VA flakes are sensitive and can change their flavor profile with varying degrees of drying and I believe that my initial review was based on my smoking the tobacco a bit too much on the moist side. ake, Wessex Campaign, and Samuel Gawith FVF, which are comparable in genre. This seems to take a lighter, more sophisticated approach, seeming to me more of a red flake than a true Dark.
All in all, it's an eminently smokable tobacco, with minimal drying time (one of the best things about Dunhill products), a slightly distinctive but still very traditional flavor profile, and a nice depth that responds well to sipping. For me the closest comparison is the vastly underrated HH Pure Va from MacBaren, but this doesn't have quite the amount of spice and has a touch more sweetness. Bravo Dunhill. Must Try. Read Less

This lovely flake from Dunhill is indeed full bodied and rewarding. It burns slow, which is a good thing. The flavor profile is deep and rich with a touch of pepper. It is well worth the time and investment.
