A mature recipe of seven types of Virginia tobaccos blended with Louisiana Perique, lightly pressed for several days to mellow the mixture, then cut into flakes and rubbed up. A high quality blend with a savory taste and a fine bouquet. An outstanding tobacco with a rich depth of flavor.

I finally got some. Esoterica’s formula seems to be keeping their output extremely small and by doing so it keeps the hype and rarity of their tobacco always on the minds of smokers. Esoterica blends go for hundreds on auction sites which seems crazy... Read More to me. The high demand and low production reminds me of certain brands of quality bourbon and the extreme lengths people go to acquire them. I finally acquired a tin of this after about three years of waiting. Got an email alert and immediately logged in and picked up this and another Esoterica blend. I’d say that they were all completely gone within 30 minutes, as some friends I alerted were out of luck when they tried to get some. I don’t stash 25 tins in my cellar to smoke when I’m 75. I open the tin and smoke it every so often. Tin notes of raisins and figs. About as smooth a smoke as can be. Virgina’s are very enjoyable for just about everyone and this has seven different kinds of Virginia’s in it, along with Perique. Remarkable flavor. There is a wonderful floral top note I’ve yet to taste in any other Virginia blend. The floral lemon note to this blend is unlike anything I have yet to smoke. The Perique must be used sparingly because hardly any smokiness associated with the Perique was noticeable to me. Upon opening the tin you can see the 7 different types of leaves blended to make the cakes which are ultimately rubbed into rough cut ribbons. It ships quite moist. Due to the majority of the blend being Virgina’s it burns hot. Frequent tamping is necessary in order to keep the heat under control. Is it very good? Yes. Are there other tobacco’s that are readily available year round that come close? Yes. Read Less
Dunbar is one of several ghost blends by the venerable Esoterica Tobacciana of the Jersey Isles. Its elusiveness on the shelves more than lives up to its shy character in the bowl. If you hit the sweet spot with the drying time, burn rate and weather... Read More, you will find an excellent darker VaPer that is at once sweet and comforting. At other times the blend remains reserved, though rarely dull. I have only tasted a tin about 10 years old, which is about as often as once finds Esoterica in stock. With luck, that is. I prefer Dunbar to Tilbury, though both are good. My Margate and Penzance tins I gifted away half-smoked long ago. Read Less
I'm really loving Dunbar right now. The tin note is similar to other VA/pers like Dunhill Dark Flake but I also notice a slight hint of apricot and a light fruit and very light fruit floral note. Seven varieties of Virginia that add a full spectrum... Read More of flavors, and each type lending a delightful flavor to this marriage of Virginia's and Perique. It is indeed a marriage, and with each puff you might taste citrus tea, sweet bread, a touch of hay, a sour tang, a beautiful floral note, and the underlying essence of treacle and dark fruits (allegedly). For some reason I'm always reminded of an ocean breeze when I'm smoking esoterica Virginias. Its weird, but there's something there that reminds me of salt water in the air (or smoke). The second half of the pipe is more reminiscent of a normal va/per but still carrying those same flavors, though now with more spice and melding of flavor. Here lies the reason why I think Dunbar is in a class of its own. It starts out as a showcase of Virginia complexity and diverse flavors, but with that special esoterica flavor, and this carries all the way to the bottom. There's simply something about that little extra twang and special flavor, especially further in, that keeps me craving this blend. For mild to medium bodied va/pers there's only one other that really adds that extra special something (so far), and that would be Rattray's Hal o' the Wind, which is also pretty damn hard to find, unfortunately. EDIT: I'd add C&D Sunday Picnic to make that the three best VA/pers in existence right now. Even though Sunday Picnic isn't strictly a VA/per, i still categorize it as such, and with a few years of age you'll be hard pressed to find a VA/per with such a delicious flavor. Plus it has the added benefit of being easy to find. I'll be getting a pound of each at the nearest opportunity. Dunbar is mild-medium in body and nicotine, and both packs and smokes well once dried. The combination of ingredients here make Dunbar a VA/per that is unique in flavor, and if you are a lover of va/per blends or even just Virginia tobacco in general I highly recommend that you seek Dunbar out. It is definitely worth the effort. Read Less
This tobacco smells like ripe honeydew melons and tastes like standing in a field as the last snows of winter are melting away. That ice and hay smell... I cant explain it any better. It smokes perfectly all the way down to a white, powdery ash. ... Read MoreIn my top three tobaccos. Read Less
This is (at this moment in time) my favorite Virginia Perique blend available today. Whatever Germain does to these VA's is simply brilliant! Germain, everything else falls short in comparison. This is currently my all day smoke and I never tire of it. There is true depth to this smoke, you get more low notes than most VaPers but there are some splendid high notes that work synergisticly with the low notes to create a beautiful symphony in your mouth (Cheesy). To this date I have only had fresh Dunbar but I can only imagine this one will age gracefully, and I have plenty in the cellar so I will one day find out. I have nothing negative to say about this one as there are no negatives to speak of, ya can't mess with perfection, and Dunbar is indeed perfect. Unfortunately this one, along with every other Esoterica is very hard to come by because the demand for such a high grade tobacco is high and I will say the hype is very well justified with this one. I just hope I can get my hands on enough to last me the rest of my years.

I have tried a number of Va/pers, and I don't buy into the hype around Esoterica. Stonehaven is good, but not great, too weak for me. Penzance is also good, but that one has an odd aftertaste, processed and flat. I have had Pembroke and Margate, both... Read More are fine but again, nothing to geek out over. Tilbury, wth? So when I found a tin of this at my local shop, I went for it, just because I may not get the opportunity again. But I didn't expect much.
This stuff is fantastic. More flavor and complexity than any va/per I have tried. From one who smokes mostly English blends this was a delight, sweet and no noticeable spice from the perique, not that I mind it, just isn't needed here, guessing that is where some of the sweet comes from. And you don't have to play breathing acrobatics to nuance some magic from the blend. Lucky to have snagged a bag from SP, so I'll have more after the tin is soon gone. I guess they got at least 1 winner in the line up. :)

I've been smoking a stock of Dunbar from 2005. It's interesting how much darker in color it looks as compared to the newer stock from this year. For me, this is the epitome of the Va/Per blend.
