Presentation: Haddo's Delight comes in a chunky chopped ribbon. My tin had a melting pot of shapes and sizes. Throughout the tin, there are dark pieces of what I believe to be the perique or black cavendish that need to be broken up a bit more than w... Read More
hat was provided. Amongst the darker portions of perique and black cavendish, lies medium brown/red virginias and a few brights and the lighter and smaller chunks of white burley. Nice sugar crystals had formed on the darker tobaccos due to the age of the tin, which was eye candy.
Palate: The newly opened tin hits you with a plum and raisin aroma, with a slight feather tickle from what seems to be minuscule vinegar to the nostrils. Very strong topping, but not nauseating. This blend is complex. It offers a deep earthy bouquet and diverse taste. It's somewhat smooth and while the rum topping is heavy applied in the tin, it doesn't particularly overwhelm the tobacco taste, but is noticeable. The base of Virginias is mostly reds from what I can gather, which offer a delicate sweetness, with a hint of bright here and there. The black cavendish adds a creamy dimension to the mouth feel and retrohale, while the perique is a little spicy, yet more dark fruit natured than anything. The burley is barely detectable, as I feel it may have been added to round out some of the rougher spots. It does however have a lovely side stream.
Performance: When I first smoked this blend, it didn't consistently give me the same flavor and was hard to keep lit due to the uneven cut. I'm not sure if this was just my tin, or if this is how all the tins are, but I feel that it could use a re-work in how it is packaged. Either new or aged, Haddo's Delight needs some breathing time to settle down. Even with the 4+ years of age, it was unrefined and had some sharp edges that needed to be dulled. Lights with two or three charring, and stays lit until the last 1/3 of the bowl. Requires an additional light. Burns at a medium pace, not too fast or slow. Medium to medium/strong nicotine hit, yet varies on your tolerance.
Conclusion: This blend sat for another year in the jar before I came back to it. It developed a lovely deep dark chocolate aroma that was absent when initially opening it and the plum/raisin smell was diminished greatly and not sharp. Perhaps I needed to let it mellow a bit before truly experiencing this popular blend. I can see why so many people like it, but first impressions are everything. I enjoyed it after it went to rehab for 12 months and found myself reaching for it every night for two weeks as my nightly smoke. It's a delectable smoke and its complexity shines despite its shortcomings, but I can't see myself cellaring any more than one or two tins of this tobacco, due to the factors mentioned above. There are many tobaccos in which I prefer to this as of right now, especially as this is a Va/Per and I have a better palate for other blends in this category. I'm afraid I'll let this blend slip through my list of favorites as so many others before me have felt the opposite, but I won't be sad. I know that Haddo's Delight will stick around, and if something changes, then perhaps those few extra tins won't go to waste. Read Less

and match well with the raison like perique. I detect just a little black pepper from the perique now and again and it gets stronger halfway through the bowl, but nothing that would tingle the nose or offend the palate. The cocoa is detectable at lower temps but disappears if smoked too hot. The quality is of a smooth and somewhat mild aromatic, but the strength of flavor and nicotine is medium. I've often found that the higher quality blends/mixtures are medium in flavor and body, but lighter in nicotine. This has a decent finish, though somewhat tannic depending on your companion drink. I'd place the nicotine level at 2.0-2.5 out of 5. Read Less

The fruity, winey top note superbly complements the combination of virginias and perique that make up the mixture. I think it's excellent young, but with age it's just spectacular. I've been putting away some to age each year for almost as long as I've been smoking it. There are few blends that I think benefit from age as much as Haddo's does. I'll smoke it young if I have to--I still love it--but I'm ever so glad that I've been steadily cellaring it so that I can smoke 8-10 year old tins of it. t seemed a bit harsh and flavorless. I put it in my pipe bag and proceeded to finish my Burley. Later, after I got home, I sniffed it again...very fruity and much different than my regular smoke. The cut looked good, a mix of ribbon and coarse cut with vestiges of unrubbed flake. It seemed a bit moist so as is my habit, I let the tin sit undisturbed for a few days before trying it again...still didn’t like it much but it wasn’t so bad the second time...I let it sit covered for a week and then on one of my excursions, I left my Burley at home and took only the Haddos. An hour or so and a bowlful later. I figured out how to smoke it, slowly and with small puffs, it wasn’t so bad after all. It became an exclusive in my bag for a few days and I began to enjoy it. My opinion...don’t hurry this one, it’s acrtually quite a tasty and satisfying smoke if it’s dried out a bit and you don’t force the issue. Mr. Pease is rarely wrong with his blends and this one is no exception but you have to give it a chance as it’s a pretty complex blend employing some unspoken technique in its manufacture. Turns out to be a really good blend if given a chance. My initial take wasn’t good but patience will out and in this case patience definitely paid off. It’s not likely to be become part of my regular rotation but then it’ll take time to see. I like it as a change of pace from my occasionally boring Burley. is so much Perique & I guess that, combined with the Rum flavoring fried my palate & turned me into a fire-breathing dragon. This tobacco finally started easing up on my palate only during the fourth quarter... too late! Who was Haddo anyway? Throughout my ordeal I was able to discover something of his character... he was a real boozer who liked Perique. Because of this & a few other GLP blends (I also thought Westminster was awful) I tend to stay away from them. I recently purchased a tin of Blairgowrie & if that one doesn't work, the Prince of Pease & I will be parting ways.
Honestly, after ten years of aging, imagine how disappointed I was... expecting a much better smoke. Just goes to show that aging might even detract from the quality of some blends. I think extra Perique gave it additional strength but at the cost of a chile pepper effect & the Rum made it burn like a forest fire in June. It has a good burning quality about it. Perique & vinegar is dominant initially but subsides a little after all the tobaccos meld into a halfway decent smoking experience. When the bakky melds after about one third is burned off is when this blend improves a little & treats you with that blissful Vitamin N. That was the best thing about this blend... the strength! This concoction provides plenty of Vitamin N... something I seek out while shopping for pipe tobacco & I respect those who rated this highly as it appears to be quite a popular blend. Finally, I didn't like it too much then & after twelve years of aging, don't like it too much now... maybe even less. Not too bad but shall never purchase another. Maybe another 10 years of age? Product: G. L. Pease Haddo's Delight 8oz
This is an old favorite. It helped forge the path that I am on now by making me realize the possibilities outside the realm of Latakia mixtures. It took some time to understand and can actually be unforgiving if smoked in the wrong pipe but if you ar... Read More
e patient and find a pipe that smoke Haddo's well you will be greatly rewarded. It's a very complex smoke so I like to smoke this one when I have nothing else to do but concentrate on the plethora of woven flavors that delight my palate. I haven't smoked this mixture in years but I have a large tin in my cellar and I'll be popping the lid when it reaches 10 years of age. I've had this one fresh and with several years of age one it and it smokes great either way but I do prefer at least 6 months in the tin to let the flavors marry a bit before I lock and load. The room note is nice but non-smokers will probably still give ya the stink eye if you're smoking this near them. The nicotine is in the "just right" park (medium) and makes for a good, satisfying smoke any time of the day but I usually enjoy it most on a nice and cool evening. This one never fails to take me to that special place. One of my favorite Pease mixtures, no doubt.

Four dots?

I steered away from this blend due to this 4 dot stregth rating. I still something of a timid smoker. Finally, cheered on by some pleasant vapers I worked up my courage and ordered a tin. Much to my surprise I found it to be a smooth and pleasant b... Read More

I don't know who this guy Haddo is but for vapers he should try Dunhills Elizabethan mixture. Stokkebye's luxury bullseye is also pretty good. GL Peases Cairo is much better for a vaper.

Friday nights I drink a Martini as a tradition. This blend is very complimentary to Gin.
Reminiscent of Sixpence

IMO in some ways this reminds me of Sixpence, but milder with a good bit of spice, as I smoked it in my Shire Cobbit, perhaps it'd be stronger in my Dwarf Cobbit, but this is pretty good!
Another great blend from Greg!

A nice over-all blend, but there is something that this is topped with that doesn't set right with me. Sometimes I'm okay with it, other days it over-powers me. It doesn't have that normal fermented smell of a perique blend. There's some "sweet&... Read More
quot; like topping - maybe dried fruit or rum? Va or VA/Per's never bite me - but for some reason this one does, I think it's the topping. Again, I think time may be the key here.
Going to let it cellar for a while and see if the topping calms down. The tobacco itself is very good and of very good quality masterfully blended between the leafs, when you can get past the top note.
Could just be a fresh tin that hasn't had time to mellow out and meld together.
Decent smoke, probably be great with age. Read Less

I bought this because I wanted a heavy perique blend. I am not a perique lover by any means but I wanted to develop my palate so I could decipher perique in other blends. I guess you could say this was a training blend. Little did I know that I would... Read More
come to fully enjoy it. The tin note has a very full aroma. It smells of liquor and dried fruit. That aroma translates into the smoke. The smoke is intense and I therefore smoke it in small bowls. This is a nice change of pace when I don't want a latakia blend. Read Less

After not smoking tobacco for a while, this was like the Tyson-Mcneely fight. It was the first round and I was looking for the ropes. I smoked about 3 bowls until it came around to appeal to my senses. About 1/3 of the time while smoking the two ounc... Read More
e ten, I get a nicotine punch that will clamor the mightiest of hands and make the sweat pour like ak-47 bullets. Honestly, its only around the bottom of the bowl where it gets heavy. It has a wonderful room note and flavor that shifts the further you get down in the bowl. The note and flavor are kind of like a fruitcake, or a raisin cake. A pretty good smoke for a seasoned smoker, but honestly if you are just starting out, you might wanna try something a little lighter. Overall a unique blend though. Read Less
