Once I’m awake enough in the morning I grab an ancient Dunhill Redbark and fill it with Chelsea Morning. I’ve done that for years. The pipe is rickety but it. seems to augment the sugary sweetness of the tobacco. Just as the tobacco tastes seem to ... Read More
mirror the flavor of my cup of coffee. This is heaven! Until recently I thought this blend was unique, but then I discovered its louder, rowdier cousin McClelland’s Grand Samsun. I love a good early morning smoke! Its glorious sitting out on the veranda, at 6:30 am, listening to the multitude of birds singing. While watching smoke rings drift away on a cool morning breeze. I savor puffs of mouth watering Orientals swirling i... Read More
n buttery Latakia. It's a treat on the rare occasion the wife is away and the day is for play.
My favorite blend for this glorious morning moment is the complex yet light English. While searching around to replace my brand "et ventum", dunhill EMP, I found my way to G. L. Pease's Chelsea Morning. The old adage that "change is good for you", rings true once again. Chelsea Morning does EMP better than EMP! Even if EMP comes back, I doubt I will return to it. CM is my new champion!
The flavors of CM are richer, deeper and more creamy. It's complex and intriguing. Relaxing and thought provoking. I find myself thinking of a more sophisticated Nightcap lite. There's a wonderful saviory and tangy Oriental flavor that is quickly enveloped with creamy Latakia, finishing with a earthy sweet Virginia. The one notable difference between EMP and CM, the Orientals are more pronounced. In my new tin they were savoury, and tended to decidedly dominate if I puffed too hard. Other reviews have identified Izmer Oriental. One can say that it makes things interesting... or one can say it clashes and detracts. I'm of the former. The Latakia is lovely and lightly done. It balances harmoniously with the sweet Virginia. The Perique is plummy and peppery and both show randomly to good effect. CM smokes like a dream, billows of volumous flavorful smoke. you can puff like a freight train and your only punishment will be the domination of Oriental. Utterly relaxing, full of flavor, with a pinch-O-nic to start the day. Five stars!

It was so good that I decided that I'd venture out a little and try a mild English and since Chelsea Morning fit the bill I bought a tin last week but waited until Saturday morning to try it. So, this morning I loaded up my Kaywoodie Prince and fired it up. Dammit, I guess I'm an English smoker now! This is a good blend, but it isn't my favorite morning smoke. I saw 3 reviews on it, by smokers whose opinions are trustworthy. All 3 of them said things like "I like it, but I don't know if I love it....I'm not sure I'll get more of it....I don... Read More
't know if I'm jumping on board this one yet". Now having smoked 4 bowls of it, I agree with all of those statements. It's a good blend, but not mind blowing. It has a nice, balanced flavor, but it's just a little TOO light. My standard is Dunhill's EMP, (Or Daybreak which is very similar) but when I want something lighter than that, I find C&D's Good Morning is flavorful, complex, and lighter/more relaxed than EMP so it's a nice alternative. Chelsea Morning, to my taste, is a little too light. It would be a good light alternative to EMP, if I didn't have Good Morning to fill that slot already. And I believe Good Morning is a little more enjoyable than Chelsea Morning. But this blend is definitely nice. Flavor is good, and rather unique, though I wish it had just a bit more presence. The tobacco behaves well, burns well. It's a class act, worth trying. I just think that for a premium tobacco, by a top-notch blender, at a somewhat premium price, this tobacco should be a little more mind blowing than it is. Maybe with some age it will be mind blowing. I'll probably by an 8oz tin and cellar it for a while, and smoke it on occasion when I feel like something out of the ordinary. But I doubt I'll smoke this with any regularity. Like I said, it's good but it doesn't blow me away. My standard morning smokes (EMP, and Good Morning) are a little more satisfying...and a little less expensive Read Less

Perhaps that is intended: could it be easier on the morning palate that way? I did not find anything truly favourable in this blend. It burned hot regularly, too.
Perhaps I will revisit this blend after having tried some other "breakfast" blends. At this time, it proved a disappointing experience. Nonetheless, I count myself among a distinct minority of smokers, if the general reviews are to be believed. I would still recommend that newcomers smoke this blend: experimenting is the heart and soul of this hobby.

rting role with woodsy and savory undertones. The perique also plays a supporting role with hints of raisin. This hint of raisin is no doubt brought out by the sweeter notes of the Virginias and Oriental. Not sure if it is just me, but this is very similar to Seattle Pipe Club's Mississippi River blends. If you like those, you will undoubtedly like this GLP offering. It is not overly moist, but I tend to let it dry for at least a month or so after opening. Burns to a nice grey ash. Puff this one slowly and it will pay dividends with its complex balance of flavors. As one reviewer noted, I have noticed some inconsistency between tins, but that does not bother me, and it is a bit expected given the (no doubt) complex blending process. I highly recommend this blend - one of my favorites in the rotation. Read Less

resting. I also find it a little less moist (or swampy??) than any other English I've had. It just seems less thick and oily, and more earthly and complex. I normally puff harder on English/Balkans than I do VAs, but this one I have to sip because it's so complex, and the Perique adds even more to that. This is fine, because the flavor is huge. Not too much of a certain leaf and not too little of it either. Right when I think there could be more Oriental, I begin tasting it again. I just had in on a slightly rainy, cooler summer day commuting into work. Lovely. Great stuff. One word description: Complex. This is also the best blend I've been able to pair with a cup of coffee.
