String and Good!

I have been a dyed in the wool fan for over 40 years. It's what led me into the enjoyment of tobacco pipes. I had long wished to find a dark shag tobacco that would best fit the description of Holmes's everyday smoke. And now I have found not one, bu... Read More
t two that vie for the title. Kendal Dark Shag, and Kendal Dark Bird's Eye. Both are manufactured by the English firm of Gawith & Hoggarth which have been around since just 10 years before Holmes is said to have been born, and both are the darkest shags I know of. Kendal Dark is very strong on the nicotine scale, but surprisingly pleasant to smoke: almost creamy smooth with maybe a touch of flowery or fruity notes. I have added it to my choice of everyday smokes, but not all day smokes. Two bowls of it in a row have given me visions of Holmes's Stradivarius floating over my head and playing 'Barcarole'! I can well imagine the visions Holmes must have had smoking out a three pipe problem with this or the Bird's Eye shag and see the denouement of a seemingly insoluble riddle materialize before his very eyes. I give it five stars, though I had a problem displaying more than 4.71 stars on the display. Read Less

Taste is medium to full and mostly consistent, with notes of sweet hay, spicy, sugar, bread, savory, rich dirt, nuts, wood, dry, floral, acidic, mildly sour, peaty vegetation, mild herbal, citrus peel/zest, a tangy dark fruit background note, and a very peppery retro. Dark VA with Cocoa & Anise
August 30, 2021
Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Kendal Dark Bulk
There's no Lakeland in this. Unlike our C&D or Pease mixtures, this one is much less tangy than a red VA, and possesses no citrus from the bright VA. Perhaps it's the casing but this is woody sweet with a slight anise flavor. It's a little one-dim... Read More
ensional in comparison to the more complex flavors of the Red and Bright VAs. This also possesses a decidedly cocoa flavor to it... wow, I could really taste the chocolate after sipping this and then after a sip of coffee. The mouth feel is creamy and doesn't posses the sharpness we encounter in most VA. Because of this, it won't wear out your tongue and we can smoke this one all day. I usually equate anise and cocoa with burley - not virginia, so it was a little different but pleasant (think sweet chocolate licorice). I absolutely love the shag cut; packing is easy, it burns steady, albeit quickly, stays lit longer and produces gobs of smoke. Sip it. The shag cut will heat up quick, turn ashy, harsh and you'll lose the nuance. The nicotine is stronger than most, and I'd rate this one at 3 out of 5. One to have with a black coffee, but not one I'd consider as an after-dinner tobacco. Read Less

This is great stuff. I don’t often smoke it by itself, but I use it in a great many of my blending endeavors. Hearty, deep, smokey Virginia. Can’t go wrong.

th blends, this distinct scent might remind you of what might be SG’s masterpiece, another pure Virginia offering, the barely obtainable Brown Number Four rope/twist blend. This similarity might strike you in the pouch note but also in two other areas: Kendal Dark’s rich though simple flavor and its quite heady nicotine blast. Though I originally preferred GH’s more complex and medium-strong burley-Virginia blend Kendal Mixed as more of a go-to, Kendal Dark soon replaced it, and stands as the GH blend to which I keep returning. It’s there for when I seek a powerful smoke session paired with strong, simple flavor—preferably after a meal. One large bowl of this will have me set for quite a few hours! Once again, Gawith Hoggarth proves it can significantly brighten one’s day in a short amount of time.

ch whole bowl. Good and smooth any time of the day or night. It has a hint of an old house smell to it in the pouch aroma kind of like Planta Mild English but I detect it as really well aged tobacco in the smoking. The pouch note is not a huge selling point that's going to win a lot of people over in my opinion but I recommend looking past that. No Lakeland essence detected. I really enjoy the shag cut a lot. It's perfect for a quicker smoke on a local trip or when you've only got a few minutes but it goes well in a deeper pipe too for a little longer smoke if you'd like. Has some nicotine too. No issues with it burning hot at a reasonable pace and plenty of volume of tasty smoke. I let it dry out really good and pack moderately but not overly tight. Stays lit well too. I like the Dark Bird's Eye too and this is a good tobacco to have in rotation with it. Very clean tasting with no hint of bite or bitterness. My only regret is that I only bought 1 oz to try, It's going to go fast. Certainly worth ordering again. Highly recommended if you enjoy dark fired and shag cut that's really meant for the pipe. t. The tin aroma is more sweet than smokey. Of course, the tobacco is easy to pack and light. It stays lit with minimal effort. I opt to put finely cut tobaccos in a narrow chamber. For me, it smokes and tastes best that way. This tobacco is bold in flavour, with the dark fired really coming through, but remains incredibly smooth. There is a slight smokiness to it which adds a pleasant dimension. This is one of my most pleasant discoveries from G&H. Read Less

comes and goes throughout the smoke. I paired it for the first time with a dark roasted coffee this morning and it was sublime. It brought me back to a time when a younger version of myself would stay up until the early hours with friends no longer here and we'd drink coffee, smoke our cigarettes, and talk about life and the mysteries surrounding it. Make no mistake: this does not taste like cigarettes! It merely reminded me of those times. If you enjoy strong tobaccos which pair well with coffee, then I suggest you check this out. Since it is a shag cut, I recommend packing it tighter than you normally would so that it doesn't burn too fast. Sip this instead of drag it. It has a tendency to get hot and when it does, I have found that it becomes slightly acrid. My favorite pipe to smoke this in is a Peterson 150 Spigot. Read Less

Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Kendal Dark Bulk

ready to smoke as is (for me at least)- and extremely easy to pack. It likes to burn hot, so I sip it very slowly, which brings out the sweetish smokiness very nicely. Puff too quickly, and it takes a slight bitter taste and gets very peppery in the nose. There is a slight Lakeland essence, but it burns off mid-bowl leaving a wonderful dark-fired Virginia taste. The taste is strong, nic-hit strong, and room note is strong but not unpleasant. The wife approves. Great quality tobacco. Read Less

Having more time in the jar has allowed this blend to play a trick on the profile.
While not a strong example of Gawith Hoggarth flavoring, within a short time it has shifted towards what I call a “floral cigar” style flavor.
My long and continuing enjoyment of cigars has brought me a few chances to know cigars with a floral hint to the profile. I wont give the list here but they are a bit hard to come by and highly prized when found.
So this pipe blend has started to offer flavor in line with some of those high quality cigars.
I will admit the two tobaccos arrived at that point in different ways yet I find the experience similar.
I credit the natural flavorings used by GH which meld and enhance the tobaccos which are of good initial quality.
Without my prior taste experience I would still enjoy the flavor of this blend, I simply can explain to others with a small amount of clarity. Read Less

If you like flavorful, strong tobaccis you can't go wrong here, but by itself it may be to simple for some. I know some people think there is a Lakeland topping on Kendal dark and dark Birdseye, but I'm almost 100% sure there is no topping, and that the suspect is in fact the dark air cured that has a very unique aroma that is almost floral and sweet. order of my preference with the most preferred first. Of course these are just my opinions after smoking pipes for 30 years; yours may be entirely different.
1. Mac Baren Seven Seas Black --- No bite, good flavor while and after smoking, good room aroma.

3. Sutliff (Altadis) B37 Casanova --- No bite, good generic flavor while and after smoking, good steady burn, and good room aroma.
4. Lane Limited BC-A --- Good but not quite as flavorful as the Mac Barens or Sutliff Casanova nor as good a room aroma. There is no bite and a mild aftertaste. It is a little more difficult to keep lit.
5. Sutliff (Altadis) Classic Chocolate --- Nice aroma and a little more flavor than Sutliff coffee tobbaco. Burns fine and little bite. Lingering vague aftertaste.
6. Gawaith Hoggarth & Co. Kendal Dark --- The small ribbon burns well and does not bite, but it has little flavor, aftertaste or aroma.
7. Newminister No. 201 Straight Black --- Mild aroma. Little flavor or bite. Burns fine.
