A ready rubbed blend of matured Burley tobaccos, mixed with just a touch of golden Virginia, gives Mac Baren's Golden Blend a mellow and pleasant aroma which has made it popular with pipe smokers all over the world.
My favourite burley blend is Solani ABF but it never seems to be in stock so I thought I'd try my luck with Golden Extra. I'm glad I did!
Though not as sophisticated as ABF, Golden Extra hits all the right Burley notes for me - smooth enough to be ... Read Morea daily smoke, sufficiently full-flavoured without harsh spots, and leaves a nice room note that just says PIPE.
I could detect no topping; this is a straight Burley, not an Aromatic. I'm told MacBaren Symphony is similar to GE but sweeter, so if you're looking for a bit more sugar, perhaps look there.
Cut is a broken flake, so you've got options for packing (rubbed out, stuffed in, or somewhere in between). Mine was the perfect moisture level right from the tin, burns slowly and doesn't bite.
I'll be stocking the cellar with more of this classic blend from Mac Baren. Highly recommended for Burley lovers everywhere. I'm rating at 4 stars as GE falls short of ABF for me, but at half the price of the Solani, it's a great smoke! Read Less

In my country it is one of these cheap, drugstore and fuel station pipe tobaccos, which does not imply that it is bad. After all GOLDEN BLEND is on the market since 1952. I categorize this as a Danish Mixture, not as an Aromatic. Artificial flavourin... Read Moreg is very obvious. It does not produce a specific obtrusive flavour, it’s just too much in total for my palate. I am generally scared away by (obvious) artificial flavourings and can always identify these chemicals immediately. On top of this, I find it often difficult to identify their intended aromas. Here it might be some citrus or fruit, and occasionally I think I get some sparkles of honey or tonka bean, among several other flavours that I am not able to name.
Besides the mentioned flavouring, Burley is the leading tobacco in this mixture, donating a pleasant tobacco flavour. I guess Virginia plays a technical role only. It might help to cool down and tame the Burley, but the typical aromas of Virginia just don’t make their way through. GOLDEN BLEND comes as a Ready Rubbed in acceptable moisture, burns well and provokes no tongue-burns. Over all it is a simplistic, mellow, everyday/anytime mixture that may please a lot of smokers, especially beginners. Not me, though. I prefer more natural tobaccos with less or no flavourings and toppings. Unfortunately this mixture did ghost my pipes used. Read Less

The first half of the bowl: was that same dry smoke no topping detected rather bland. Then, the smoke began to sweeten both in taste and scent. That odd incense-like quality went away. I could start to catch a hint of grass but not forward and not Burley foward either. From there, it was rather melow and enjoyable down to the bottom of the bowl but not satisfying. There’s nothing really fine or distinct about this BurVa blend. There’s a good pouch note to be found in Golden Extra—I’ll give it that.
