McConnell Scottish Flake and Scottish Cake are truly, uniquely magnificent. As an everyday pipe smoker, I am hard pressed to 1.) find a blend which displays mature flavours even while young 2.) find a blend which is neither too strong nor too light 3... Read More.) find a blend which has adequate complexity and strength, but will gracefully fade into the background if needed, and 4.) find a blend which really just tastes like good tobacco, instead of having a more distinctive flavour which, while excellent, bores you after 5 tins (I'm looking at you, Wessex Brown). If you are a VA smoker, don't try this--don't buy it. I don't want it to get too popular, I want all of it. It is too perfect to share.
10/10, will buy again (and again and again and again) Read Less
I think this is the most interesting flake around, and is vastly under appreciated. It is both sweet and tangy, and at the same time slightly earthy. The Virginia and Perique elements provide a sweet, peppery edge with a main body of pure tobacco flav... I really enjoy this a lot. It has a lot of good red Va flavor that is nicely complimented by the burley and perique. Stays lit really well and smokes and tastes great in a wide assortment of pipes. Not overly complex but there is enough going on to k... Read Moreeep me interested and coming back for more. It burns on the slower side of things and I normally smoke it in a smaller pot or straight apple. This is the best offering I have found from this blender, followed up by folded flake. Read Less
This is a pretty good flake. Tin note is plums, earth and orange zest. Z fold and stuff, with a few threads above, a bit of tamping and I only need one or two relights. Perhaps it's just me but it might get a bit hot if you're not careful. Taste is e... Read Morearthy with a bit of pepper. It's not a very thick smoke but it's pretty tasty. Read Less
I should tell you that this tobacco is awful, and TERRIBLE, so you won't buy it and leave it all for me! But I must praise this gem for what it is. Sweet, tangy, and creamy--wonderful. I don't know too many ways to describe this wonderful tobacco bec... Read Moreause I've used many of these words before: fruity, some earth, nutty, and grassy. The perique is present in not only the mouth feel, but also in a nice plumy flavor, the virginas are hay and sweet; and the burley adds some wonderful nuttyness that just rounds out the smoke for an incredible experience. Yes, all words I've used before, so why is this one different? I don't know! It just is! Everything works in the most amazing harmonious way. This is my desert island tobacco. So, though I may regret saying this, do yourself and buy a tin...but maybe just the one! Read Less
The tin note is rich, earthy, natural tobacco and not much else. Thinly-sliced perfect flakes are dark brown and behave well in the pipe. The Burley is somewhat dominant in the smoke, with a good Perique content. The strength builds in the second hal... Read Moref of the bowl, becoming somewhat stronger than average. Unlike many flake tobaccos, this one seems smoother when fully dried. A year ago, I wouldn't have given this a second glance, but now, in the post-McClelland era, I may reorder. Read Less
I've tried a lot of Va-Per blends over the last couple years, and sometimes it felt like I was lost in the middle of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" - this one is too cased, this one is too bland, this one is too sweet, etc. In my opinion McConne... Read Morell got it right with Scottish Flake. It's a well-balanced mix of tangy Virginias with a nice bit of both plum and pepper from the perique. Too much perique gives me a lump in my throat, and if I really puff fast and hard this one can do that, but if I smoke at a normal pace it's perfect. The burley adds just the right low note to the mix, and it has just the right sweetness along with a slightly salty flavor. Just enough complexity to stay interesting but doesn't require my full attention to appreciate. The flakes did not need drying before smoking, they load well, burn slow and complete. Compared to its cousin McConnell Scottish Cake, this is more full-flavored and less sweet. (For me, the flavors in the cake are not as pronounced, and the extra sweetness overwhelms the flavors.) In my opinion, this one is just right. My only complaint is the cost per ounce is fairly high compared to other VaPers, but that won't stop me from getting some more to age. Highly recommended.
