Once bitten...

Product: Samuel Gawith Sam's Flake 50g
The tin note reminded me of opening a brand new pouch of Red Man chewing tobacco. Smelled great! Typical Soggy Samuel Gawith. After more than an hour of drying on the kitchen counter, it burned HOT!! Bit my tongue. Just prior to setting my mout... Read More
h ablaze, I did enjoy the flavor. I don't know if I'll buy this particular blend again, but I do like the fact that Samuel Gawith usually blends the tobaccos in such a way that the natural flavors shine without a lot of toppings or artificial flavors. Read Less
Refinement

Product: Samuel Gawith Sam's Flake 50g
This flake has a light, sweet topping sometimes referred to as, "British flavoring." I liked it at first, but held off any conclusion until I finished a tin. It really grew on me. The smoke has a refined, balance of flavors, light, but n... Read More

Virginias, Orientals and tonka bean flavour.

Product: Samuel Gawith Sam's Flake 50g
On opening the tin, an intense scent of hay and grass from Virginia greets you. Absolutely no whiff of Orientals, nor of any flavouring. Neatly arranged flake straps of yellow and brown colour, with very few black sparkles. Moisture in tin is unexpec... Read More
tedly low for a Samuel Gawith. This brand normally stands for soaking wet tobaccos. Still, it needs a little drying time before stuffing. According to the producer this mixture consists of Virginias and Orientals only, with an additional flavouring of tonka bean.
The main players of this mixture are the Virginias with flavours of hay, grass, earth and a hint of citrus. The Orientals are in a far background. They are here to donate some body, wood and a little spice to the blend, not to show up. They marry up well with the Virginias. IMO the tonka bean flavouring is unnecessary, but it has been done carefully. I care more about the traces of a floral note that I don’t like. Given the place of production (Kendal, Lakeland) it could be possible, that a cloud of dreadful “Lakeland essence” touched this blend unintentionally. These two alien flavours set back the natural tobacco aromas considerably. The nicotine level is low. This mixture is far from being characterful or deep digging. It does not stand out in any way. I shall not come back to it. Read Less

A Flake Fit Not Just For Mayor, But A King

Product: Samuel Gawith Sam's Flake 50g
There must be some good reason this blending house attached its founder’s name to this blend. Though found in SG’s “Kendal Mayor’s Collection”, it might cause you to wonder if it has higher aspirations!
This is more complex than SG’s Best Brown Fl... Read More
ake and Full Virginia Flake, but it might not be the tour-de-force that FVF is. Still, I puff this third Virginia blend more often as it seems more robust and complex in flavor, due to the Orientals in the background and the tonquin bean topping that to me enhances the flavor but doesn’t overwhelm the other elements.
This could easily be an all-day. But though that tonquin bean doesn’t drown out all other elements within this blend, I do think that to enjoy this offering, you must be able to enjoy tonquin bean. If you don’t, this offering might be a fit for Sir Sam, but not for you. 5.0 stars. Read Less
Shocking, and delicious

I was expecting a very mild, uneventful smoke here. It is a very smooth and enjoyable smoke. Great slow burning flake with fantastic flavor. The tonquin is very nicely applied and only compliments the tobacco flavor.
