If I ever work up the courage to try any of the 15.98 ounces that I "cellared"... I will update this review. But me thinks 100 yrs is the appropriate amount of aging for this pile - because to enjoy it, your palet needs to be that non functional.
This is not indicative of Samuel Gawith's other offerings many of which (my experience being with the non aromatics) are very fine.

I love it. To me it has a taste like the burnt ends of a brisket. A charred beefy flavor. It is nice cool slow burning and has kind of a heavyness to the smoke.

lowed through. After a little drying time I packed it into my small church warden and was instantly hit with a medium-well grilled steak flavor that only gets better on the retrohale.
The nicotine is there but not overwhelming like some reviewers have suggested. It really needed more drying time, but a great smoke none the less.
It is really good out of the tin and I imagine it will be wonderful when aged. I will definitely be adding this my regular rotation and to my cellar. Read Less

pleased. The smell was foul, something akin to burning circuitry, mesquite, and rank oil all at once. I also don't like when my pipe hand stinks after smoking. My impression after six months is unchanged as far as aroma goes. As for flavor, I did pick up some sweeter notes on the tobacco after some rest and there was no bite, however, the smell makes me think I'm smoking something toxic. Read Less

the SG’s Lakeland blends, you most likely will either really fancy or dislike this black rope blend.
Some reviewers were not incorrect when they wrote this blend will taste at times like burning plastic and at times like really fine barbecued beef “burnt ends”. But luckily for me, it was far more of the latter. The burnt plastic taste may surface near the beginning of the bowl, but keep puffing and you’ll get that flavor of burnt ends from some solid Kansas City barbecue joint. Admittedly, at certain times you will experience a third taste, and not a savory one, as if you licked the barbecue grill after your meat was cleared off and the fire had cooled. Burnt beef taste fused with WD-40 grease and congealed beef fat. Why would I subject myself to this, or pay for such tobacco, some will ask themselves.
Well, you could still cut, dry and mix this blend with your Samuel Gawith’s Brown Number Four and create a sort of “Black and Tan beer” version of tobacco. Bolder, richer, mellower and more bitter in taste than pure Brown Number Four, but slightly less nicotine. And Brown Number Four sure delivers Vitamin N in spades!
Also with every tin of Black XX you purchase, you are encouraging the survival of rope/twist tobacco, a centuries-old tradition the English thankfully keep alive. And how many other actual black tobaccos have you encountered. Unique, SG’s Black XX certainly is.

I opened my tin, moist like most Lakeland tobaccos, cut a quarter size piece off, let it dry, absolutely delicious. It is an earthy bold taste, smells wonderful.

All that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this tobacco and between the tastes of leather and meat, I have found myself back in the court of royalty numerous times. Tobacco Stake! Smells great both lit and unlit. Spicy and round, heavy on nicotine. Great for a quick chew as well. This was my first rope tobacco and I enjoyed it so much it got me started on some serious sampling of other ropes too.
