A New Classic

Product: Savinelli Doblone d'Oro 100g
Savinelli got it right with their new tobaccos. I got a tin of this when it first came out and have been buying it ever since. The blend is well balanced, rich, flavorful, complex, and strong enough for the seasoned pipe smoker without being overwh... Read More
elming for a newcomer. The flavors of the various components drift in and out, but none dominates the others. It comes a little drier than most, which means it's perfect for smoking without any dry time, and you get more smokes per ounce. It also ages well, burns clean, no bite. Nothing bad to say about this one! Try it! Read Less
A Surprise for Savinelli

Product: Savinelli Doblone d'Oro 100g
I've smoked as many different brands and blends as I can over the years to develop a well-rounded, knowledgeable palate. When you think of brands like Mc Clelland, Mac Baren, C+D and many others, you've come to expect great things. But while I own... Read More
and love many Savinelli pipes, their tobaccos have never been memorable. Until now. This is a fantastic blend with complexity and depth, medium strength and an all-day likeability. The coins are fragrant, with the perfect level of moisture (leaning towards dryer) and easy to rub out. All three of these new tobaccos instantly put Savinelli at the top of my conversations about "Great" tobacco producers. Read Less
Very Good, Sometimes

Product: Savinelli Doblone d'Oro 100g
Wonderful tin note, burns well and smokes nicely. But as A1W pointed out, it can sometime smoke poorly, almost dirty or mildly bitter. This kind of inconsistency became more pronounced as I soldiered on.
Product: Savinelli Doblone d'Oro 100g
This tobacco is very similar to Three Nuns both in appearance and taste, however this blend (for me at least) is richer, more satisfying and fuller in flavor. If you like Three Nuns, you'll likely love this!
Product: Savinelli Doblone d'Oro 100g
This stuff is amazing! Don’t get the whole fistfight for who is in the lead with this one unlike others of this category, no one tobacco takes the lead yet you can easily pick out each component. Well balanced and tasty as hell!
Good Idea Poorly Executed

Product: Savinelli Doblone d'Oro 100g
This is a very inconsistent tobacco. The messy presentation is one thing but some of the coins will smoke nicely with only a hint of bite, some of them bite so hard I can't even get the pipe 1/4 done. I've been smoking well over 20 years and I know a... Read More
good bit about tobacco and how to smoke it. This just has the dreaded Macbaren bite that I only find in their regular line of products. The HH line I've never had this issue with. This bites me just like dark twist does, and some bowls it's really bad no matter the moisture content. I fell for all the glowing reviews but I was worried it would turn out this way. If you're an experienced smoker and have had issues with bite in many of Macbaren's standard line of products you will probably run into the same thing here. It tasted really good but the bite I cannot get past. Read Less
Extraordinary

For reasons having to do with licensing, Three Nuns in its currently available form is made by MacBarens without Perique. This blend is also made by MacBarens, but it has Perique. It is outstanding in ever way that counts. Burns at a slow, consisten... Read More
t rate, does not bite and requires minimal relights. The taste is smooth, balanced and creamy. The Virginia's lack the astringency of competing reincarnated old classics, such as Escudo and Elizabethan, the Perique adds just the right spice note and the DFK seems to convey all of this goodness with significantly more oomph than I am finding in anything else out there. I have been smoking a pipe for almost 40 years, and I know exactly what the blends named in this review tasted like before they were all merged into larger companies and ruined, by no later than the mid 80's. Without comparing it to any of these old classics directly, I will say that had this blend been available 35 or so years ago it would have been a worthy competitor to any of them. I used to turn up my nose at the mere thought of smoking anything made by MacBarens, and I am frankly shocked, stunned and amazed that they, or anyone else for that matter, have managed to produce something that rivals what was available in the days when blenders worked with stocks of aged leaf, and not carboys full of chemicals. Please note the tin I purchased was dated in 2014. That may or may not make a difference. Read Less

I was a bit reluctant to try this, simply because in my old-school opinion, Savinelli's pipes are not what they used to be. I have some great Sav's from the past, before they started putting those stupid 6mm filters in everything, even their better p... Read More
ipes, and for this reason, was hesitant to try their new blends.
Anyway, this tobacco is a real treat--a very different flavor profile to any of the other rolls--Bullseye Flake, Navy rolls etc. The Burley gives this one more substance and depth, yet is not dominant. I get a fairly spicy, zesty smoke with just the right amount of Perique, not overly sweet and very smooth. I also find it cool when smoked slowly, but I can see the potential to get hot if pushed too much as well. I think it's a winner! Read Less

rt, builds up creamy like a cigar and finishes with some of that perique spice and tingle. awesome stuff. has a little strength but low enough i can smoke it all day (i tend to like high nic stuff though, might not be all day for some smokers but you won't keel over). i'll be buying five to ten tins to cellar and i think it's in my daily rotation. reminds me of HU directors cut. gth of the Dark Fired Kenyan Burley. It seemed to smoke just as cool toward the end but about halfway through the bowl is when this mixture really starts to shine. This is a fairly strong blend as you approach the halfway point that won't bite & provides abundant, creamy smoke with a perfect burn rate. I think this will become even sweeter with a little more aging. One might discover a taste of molasses or brown sugar, maybe a minor touch of Ouzo (Greek Rum) & possibly a slight Curry infusion, also grown in the Kenyan region. Read Less

I love the semi spicy sweetness of this italian style pipe tobacco. My question is, is it suppose to be extremely dry? Though dry, it taste really good. A different approach from Mac Barren/Savinelli

Not Quite 24K Tobacco Coins, But Certainly Not Fool’s Gold, Either
September 26, 2020
Product: Savinelli Doblone d'Oro 100g
Once my favorite of Savinelli blends, the old Golden Doubloon has become after several tins over this year, a respectable but at times inconsistent blend I partake in every few weeks (of Savinelli’s tobacco, I now most enjoy its Jupiter blend). Still... Read More
, Doblone D’Oro remains a good blend, which I enjoy more than Savinelli’s Brunello Flake, but its place in one of my top five tobacco blends has fallen somewhat.
Consistency isn’t a virtue of Savinelli’s pipes, I’ve found, and the same holds true with this tobacco. Some of their pipes and tobacco is mediocre, and some blends and pipes are very good. Doblone D’Oro is to me hard to qualify—it’s somewhere between those two points.
I would deem this blend complex, even. It’s drier than most and spun into coins, unlike most blends. The nutty burley is playing chords in the foreground, with the sweet Virginias playing further behind, and the dark-fired Kenyan leaf and the Perique spice strumming away a few steps behind. I hesitated to throw this thought out there but it’s been recurring in my mind through four 100 gram tins of Doblone D’Oro—this blend at its best can be complex and a balanced spicy-sweet on the tongue. But at its worst, it can be inconsistent and taste at times like a citrusy and slightly spicy cologne. Yes, I did say cologne. Sweet and fragrant and a bit tangy. Not always, but at times. I just don’t want to ever have tobacco taste like I’m sipping from my little bottle of Burberry! I’ve smoked through over 120 various blends now, and overall the sweet-citrus-and-spice taste is a bit too dominant for me, in this blend. Even so, this scratched and worn golden coin is still gold, and the old Italian bullion coin will always be hidden away in my house for when I need it. And it shines much brighter, I find, if it’s my first smoke of the day. 4.1 stars. Read Less

Too uneven for my taste
June 27, 2020
Product: Savinelli Doblone d'Oro 100g
This is the most uneven blend I've smoked. Some moments are excellent like better then I could describe and then in the same smoke I'll get an acrid burnt rubber taste. When it's going good it's a five but that five can drop to a 2 really fast.
