A true pioneer of pipe smoking, Sir Walter Raleigh once persuaded Queen Elizabeth to try smoking. He was, in fact, such a fan of the pastime that upon his beheading for his part in the plot against King James, his tobacco box was found amongst his possessions, with the inscription "Comes meus fuit illo miserrimo tempo." ("It was my comfort in those miserable times.")
