Mystery Review: February 2017

We decided to something a little different for our February Mystery Review. Yep, video. Although we usually have at least three or four reviewers, as well as one adjudicator, doing the Mystery Reviews, we thought only two people smoking and one just sitting around being smug would be a little awkward. So we outsourced the adjudication to a third party (and an envelope).

We hope you enjoy this as much as we did, but please, let us know your thoughts on the video (and the blend) in the comments. We'd love your feedback.

Maybe it's my iPad, but between my speakers, your recorder and three guys mumbling while clenching, I haven't a clue what the test tobacco was. But the spontaneous smoke rings in the middle were a nice touch. It would have been neat to morph from tasting to smoke-ring blowing. Between the mumbling, the cobs and the outfits, I'm reminded of three charters from my favorite teevee show -- Larry, Darryl and Darryl. It was pretty funny, really. Needs some work, but improved production could make this a winner😎

Gentlemen, I concur with what KevinM said about not being able to make out much of what was being said and I still do not know what tobacco it was this month. I look forward every month for the mystery review and I think that a video of the review is a fresh idea, but it needs some refinement to make it pop like the written version. Keep up the great work and keep trying new things.

    Cheers,
    Roscoe

@KevinM @Rkorn74 I fear that that is mostly my doing guys. I'm an aggressive mumbler at the best of times, stick a pipe in my mouth and I murder the English language like I'd murder a cup of tea. We were testing some new equipment for this video though, we usually run through a soundboard, but were testing a portable set-up for live and on-location video. Thanks for the feedback, we'll do better next time.

@Korey It was Two Friends - Heritage.

Interesting choice. I bought the last 2013 tin of Heritage from Strauss in Florence Ky last year. I liked it quite a bit at first but the flavor overwhelmed me after a while.

Adam -- Try not to make it too slick and over produced. Other than the audio, I thought it was kinda cool👍

Adam, I still love the idea and hope that you continue to do more videos of everything pipes. I check the website daily and usually catch anything new on the blog before I get an e-mail on it. Again, please don't let my opinion on the first offering persuade you away from trying new avenues.

@KevinM Thanks Kevin. We definitely want it to be less formal than our other videos, so I think that we'll be keeping the format largely intact 👍

@Rkorn74 No fear, Roscoe, it'll take more than some constructive (and very helpful) criticism to dissuade us. The Mystery Review remains a important part of the blog, we just want to move it forward into something that's a bit more relevant and fun for all parties.

I love the idea of a video mystery review. I liked seeing the interaction of the guys trying to guess the blend. Very cool. I enjoyed a nice smoke while watching it. Thanks for he vid.
