ADVentura's Blue Eyed Jack's Revenge Patapalo: A Smokingpipes Exclusive

Few cigars arrive with as much anticipation as ADVentura's Blue Eyed Jack's Revenge Patapalo, a Smokingpipes exclusive Lancero, that has never been released in this format, aged for two years before it ever hit the shelf. In this edition of Smoke Rings, I sat down with Chris Herath to smoke one and share our first impressions.

Note: The following transcription has been edited for clarity and brevity.

[Tyler Caldwell]: This is ADVentura's Blue Eyed Jack's Revenge in a special vitola — a Lancero — and not just an exclusive size, but a size they've never released before. This is a product that sat for two years. So if you're a fan of the Blue Eyed Jack's Revenge, you're not just getting something in a unique format — you're getting it with real age, which absolutely enhances and changes the characteristics.

[Chris Herath]: The name Patapalo roughly means peg leg, so you're leaning into that pirate theme, which fits the line. And this comes from the Mina del Rey factory, a very small, beautiful boutique operation. Lanceros are notoriously hard to roll. There's usually only one or two people in a factory who can do it, so probably one or two people rolled this entire run.

The Age Factor

This is a Mexican San Andrés wrapper with Dominican filler and binder. For me, the age is very apparent from the first light. I was immediately struck by how soft and mature this cigar feels straight from the box. Normally, cutting and lighting a Lancero, I hold my breath and hope it draws well. But from the very first draw, the smoke output is tremendous and the draw has been perfect. I think some of that comes down to age; it's had time to mature.

[TC]: Lanceros give you more intensity of the blend's flavor than other vitolas — the format concentrates everything. But knowing that intensity is there, the aging factor makes it so unique. It softens what might otherwise be aggressive and gives it a refinement you don't always get.

Tasting Notes

[CH]: For me, I'm not getting the pepper-forward profile I'd usually expect from a San Andrés cigar. This is extremely well balanced. There's a nice creaminess to it and it's very refined. Lanceros are a vitola that you really want to sit down and concentrate on. Take your time. This is not something to rush. The people who tend to enjoy Lanceros most are experienced smokers who've learned to slow down and really appreciate what a blend does in this format.

[TC]: The first flavor that stands out most to me is cocoa creaminess. If you're ever looking for a great cigar to pair with a cup of coffee or an espresso, this is absolutely spot on. The aging has done something really special here. It's taken the intensity of the Lancero format and layered a softness over the top of it.

On Smoking a Lancero

[CH]: I really am smoking this on an empty stomach at about 8:00 a.m., and I'm not having any issues. It's extremely well balanced. That's a testament to both the blend and the age. A lot of people who really enjoy Lanceros most are typically more experienced smokers, because it's the people who have learned to take their time. They're not freight-training through it. They're smoking slowly and really appreciating what the blend does in this format.

[TC]: That's what I love about Lanceros; Outside of the other vitolas of a blend, a Lancero gives you the most intensity of flavor. And when you combine that with real age, it just becomes something entirely its own.
