How to Calibrate a Hygrometer

i, everybody, I'm Alan Britt from Smokingpipes and today we're going to talk about something that may be affecting your humidor that you're not even sure about, and that is calibrating a hygrometer. A hygrometer is a tool that simply measures humidity. Most people prefer their humidity to be somewhere between 60-70%. I'm personally a little bit lower on that spectrum, but it's going to be up to your personal preference at the end of the day.

Analog and Digital Hygrometers

There are a couple different hygrometers that could be in your humidor: either an analog, which is more traditional, or a digital, which a lot of people prefer. They tend to be a little more accurate out of the box, but this way of calibrating it will work for either one of 'em.

What Supplies You'll Need to Calibrate Your Hygrometer

To calibrate your hygrometer, you're going to need a couple things. Simple table salt. Some kind of vessel to put that salt in. Some people prefer just a bottle cap, and you don't need a lot of salt, but we're using this little tupperware, a bag, and some water.

Steps for Calibrating Your Hygrometer

For the first step, you're going to take your salt and put a little bit in this Tupperware. It doesn't have to be a lot, maybe a couple of tablespoons. So once we've done that, we're going to take a little bit of water and pour that in here. It's important that it is a damp mixture. It doesn't need to be sopping wet. It should be the texture of a paste. Once we've made our paste, we're going to simply take our bag and put this inside with our hygrometer. And now that we're all sealed up, we're going to let this sit typically for about eight hours. And once we do, it should read about 75%.

Calibrating Complete

Alright, if that eight hours has passed and you're not reading 75%, your hygrometer needs to be adjusted. For most of these digital ones, you'll have a plus or minus button. You can adjust that humidity accordingly. If not, you'll just need to make a mental note on how much it's off. So hopefully, this helps calibrate your hygrometer. It's super important to make sure these things are calibrated. You spend all this money on cigars, and you want to make sure they're well taken care of.
