When one thinks of Michael Lindner's body of work, it's hard to not immediately imagine an assortment of classical shapes — many of them trim, lean designs, in addition to various plump, Comoy's-inspired shape renditions. As per Michael's approach (and that of many pipemakers worldwide), the journey began with these classics, for the simple reason that the rules for fashioning them are so rigid. And it was from this adherence to tradition that one of Michael Lindner's most famous signature shapes was born. I'm referring, of course, to the Nightshade.
At its core, the Nightshade could be defined as a fusion of the English Dublin with the Danish Acorn, but to quantify it so briefly would be an injustice. A well-defined, tucked transition leads the eye to a poised and smartly flared bowl, carefully imbued with a precise visual balance by the more subtly flared, and often organically-accented shank. There are subtle variances between each rendition, but the overall form and silhouette has made the Nightshade one of Michael's most celebrated and iconic works of art.
Recently, for example, we received two beautiful iterations of this signature (a massive Magnum-grade and a stellar Design-grade, both pictured above), sporting one of Michael's heralded sandblasts and displaying as crisp and detailed a presentation of ring-grain as can be found in the American school. Though there are small differences between the two apart from sheer scale, both can be identified as the work of Michael Lindner from across the room (and in the case of the Magnum, across the city). It's simply a beautiful shape — one we can't wait to see again.
