Tasting Notes: Rattray's Hal O' The Wynd

It would be difficult to talk about classic Virginia blends without the mention of Rattray's. For generations smokers across the globe have enjoyed these now legendary Virginias: Marlin Flake, Brown Clunee, Old Gowrie, and Hal O' The Wynd.

I tend to think of Marlin Flake as being unique within the line for two reasons: it's an actual flake rather than a broken flake, and it also has a bit of Cavendish. The other three blends all feature the same components and cut, but what makes the trio brilliant, in my opinion, is the fact that the proportions have been adjusted between the three blends in such a way as to offer something for everyone. While I've smoked plenty of each blend, Hal O' The Wynd is my go-to and has been for some time. It has the most strength and, to my tastes, the boldest flavor profile, with what I suspect to be the highest percentage of KY and Perique out of the three broken flake blends. I reach for it over and over, whether I'm breaking in a pipe, or simply when I need something comforting and consistent. This is an absolute must for the cellar if you're a Virginia smoker!
