The Benefits of Attending Pipe Shows
Hi everyone, Truett Smith here from Smokingpipes. Today I'll be talking with you about what I feel is one of the most important, significant, and special parts of the pipe community. And that is pipe shows: in-person events where the pipe community congregates to enjoy pipes and tobacco, to celebrate pipes and tobacco, and to buy pipes and tobacco.
Pipe Shows Offer Community

For me, the biggest draw of a pipe show is the communal aspect and the community of pipe smokers that you find. A pipe show is a special place because a lot of the people there are people that you're probably only ever going to see at a pipe show. So for many, it's a reunion of sorts. They may live on opposite coasts or in different countries, but they always go to this pipe show and get to meet each other again and spend time together.
Interesting Pipes and Lifelong Friends

It's also where a lot of friendships develop and are formed, with people that you'll be friends with for the rest of your life. And that's all formed from a shared love, a shared interest in pipes and pipe tobacco. But you find other common ground. You have shared experiences together at the pipe show and it also brings people there from all walks of life. And everyone's on equal footing. It doesn't matter what your background is, or where you come from, everyone is there for the same thing, and that community is really felt and that fellowship is really appreciated and fostered by these in-person pipe shows.
Another reason is, obviously, the pipes themselves. Nowhere are you going to see more pipes in one place than at a pipe show. And for many, myself included, it's a great way to see this handicraft firsthand. Even if you know you're not going to necessarily add it to your collection, it's an opportunity to see it in person and be able to say, "Oh, I saw that pipe," or "I held that pipe," or "I met that person," or whatever.
Interesting People and Events

Another reason is the personalities. I remember my first pipe show. I had admired certain pipe makers for a long time and had appreciated their work from afar, so to speak, but at a pipe show, I saw them in person. And not only that, but got to hang out with them, got to sit around a table and smoke with them along with other friends and other collectors. So it's a way to meet the personalities of the pipe world — different tobacco blenders, pipe makers, brand owners and all of that. Those people are all at pipe shows.
Lastly, every pipe show always has some sort of schedule of events. It might be a slow-smoke competition, or there might be different seminars on pipe making or on pipe tobacco blending or on some historical aspect of the hobby. And these different seminars and events are always a fun way to share and learn about the hobby with your fellow pipe smokers. So check out if there's any pipe shows in your area. If not, consider traveling. I guarantee you it'll be worth it and I will see you there.

As the author notes, there are many excellent benefits to participating in pipe shows. There is no better opportunity to buy estate pipes.
Looking forward
