Mystery Tobacco Review: January 2023

Welcome back, everyone, to the Mystery Tobacco Review. For this first episode of 2023, we asked our good friend, and head blender of Cornell & Diehl, Mr. Jeremy Reeves to return as our Guest Inquisitor for this month's review. Tune in as Truett, David, Alan, and I smoke through Jeremy's chosen mixture and attempt to guess its components, manufacturer, and name. Did we start the new year off right? Or did this maestro of pipe tobacco teach us a thing or two? Watch the full video to find out.

What is The Mystery Tobacco Review?

For those of you unfamiliar with this little game, each month one member of our team selects a tobacco for us to review in a blind taste-test. Then we gather around the camera, scratch our heads, and smoke, all while attempting to guess the mysterious mixture's components, origins, and name. There's only one rule: There are no rules.

    • (Spoiler free) That's fantastic. Great job, fellas. When this was initially released, I remember hearing some good things and then some not-so-good comments. Mostly, people were upset about the purchase options, but I had my suspicions that it was a clue that this would be a tobacco worth cellaring in bulk, one that would only blossom into what I know it is now. Like Shane suggests, I kept a couple of ounces out to smoke over the months since and only returned to it infrequently to check how it was evolving. Last week in fact, I dipped into my long-term storage of it. I was blown away at how advanced the complexity had become and how much the blend had come together into what people had hoped it would be. This was always a good blend IMO. I understood that some were jaded that they couldn't get it in 2oz tins, but something tells me those that bought in are glad they did now or whenever they decide to revisit their stash. Looking forward to buying more when I get the chance. Wonderful analysis. Now, I need to get my hands on some King Cake.

    • People start smoking for different reasons. Some think it looks cool and classy. Others start because their friends smoke.

    • Great work by the new(ish) guys! Glad Shane mentioned being conflicted about the format, I passed on the email to buy some for that reason, then was able to snag a couple of bricks at my B&M store. The Kasturi in the description put me off initially, but it's lightly condimental and adds to the smoke. I would have described the initial tin note as cloves, as did a few non-smokers that wanted to admire the "hot pocket" packaging when I bought it. Great job, really look forward to the reviews!
