Tailgating Cigars: Top Picks For Game-Day Smokes

Game days call for tailgating, and myself and Alan Britt recently shared our favorite cigar choices for tailgate smokes this season.

Note: The following transcription has been edited for clarity and brevity.

[Steve Mawby]: It is my favorite time of year. College football is back. We are here to talk about two of our favorite pastimes, tailgating and smoking cigars. Let's dive into our cigar picks for tailgating.

[Alan Britt]: If you're not smoking cigars at tailgates, you're not doing it right.

Drew Estate Tabak Especial

[AB]: My first recommendation is Tabak Especial by Drew Estate. This is a cigar that I smoked almost exclusively when I started smoking cigars years ago under a different name than Tabak, but it's still a cigar that holds up a decade plus later. It is infused with coffee, so the room note for those around you is more pleasant. It's a crowd pleaser.

Blackbird Superb

[SM]: My first pick here is the Blackbird Superb in the Robusto Gordo vitola. It is a medium-to-full-bodied smoke. This option would be my first smoke getting started early in the morning tailgating. It would pair well with a cup of coffee to get you ready to go. It'll give you the energy to get everything set up. It's a delicious cigar and a great way to start the day.

AJ Fernandez Last Call

[AB]: For sure. My second pick would be the Last Call from AJ Fernandez. This was a cigar that I recommended for occasions like tailgating or the beach often when I worked in brick-and-mortar stores. It's inexpensive, less than $6, and if you're gonna be at a tailgate throwing some cornhole, or throwing a football, you're probably gonna drop a cigar too. It's packed with flavor. Last Call is made at AJ's factory in Nicaragua. It;s a good, chunky little Robusto that will do you right.

Arturo Fuente Exquisito

[SM]: I like it. My second pick is the Arturo Fuente Exquisito. Just like Alan mentioned with his, this is a nice little bargain cigar, but you're getting a really good flavor and quality for the price. These are less than $4, and it's something you could smoke all day. It's a little bit milder but is more medium bodied than the Superb. They also come in a box of 50, so it's great to share. You can pick up a box that is not too expensive and hand them out to people. You can smoke them throughout the day and it's a nice, all-day smoke that you can have while you're hanging out and having a couple of beers.

RoMa Craft CroMagnon PA

RoMa Craft CroMagnon PA | Daily Reader

[AB]: Absolutely. My last recommendation is the CroMagnon PA from RoMa Craft Tobac. It's a brand that I enjoy all the time but this specific cigar is high on the flavor and nicotine sides. If you've partaken in a few alcoholic beverages, or smoked a lot of cigars prior, this is gonna cut right through. If you've been tailgating for about six hours, it'll get you right before you hit that 7:00 PM game.

Caldwell Eastern Standard Cakewalk

[SM]: My final recommendation is the Caldwell Eastern Standard Cakewalk. This is my celebration, victory cigar after we've won a big game. It's a little bit more pricey, so it's more of an indulgence, but nothing too crazy. It has just a wonderful flavor. It's one of my favorite cigars in general, and it makes the victory that much sweeter.
