Top 5 Favorite Box-Pressed Cigars
Today, Tyler Caldwell and I are here to share our top five favorite box-pressed cigars we have on-site here at Smokingpipes. Let us know in the comments what you think of our picks and what your favorite box-pressed sticks are.
Note: The following transcription has been edited for clarity and brevity.
[Alan Britt]: Hey, everybody. Your favorite Smokingpipes employees are back to talk about some of our favorite box-pressed cigars. Box-pressed cigars are a little bit different than your stereotypical round cigar. They are often pressed, quite literally in the box, to give them a square or rectangular, not round shape. Or they're put in presses under some pressure for a short amount of time to give them a desired shape.
AJ Fernandez New World
One of my personal favorites is the New World from AJ Fernandez. It's a beautiful cigar at an amazing price point. It's super rich and chocolatey. I personally get a ton of spice off that, which isn't atypical for an AJ Fernandez product.
[Tyler Caldwell]: Oh, absolutely. I agree. It is probably the most well-known cigar out there. That's probably one of the things that put him out there on the map, too.
[AB]: Yeah, absolutely. There are a ton of different variations on this one as well, different wrapper combinations. The Dorado is also box-pressed. It's one of the strongest cigars I've ever smoked. I believe all of them are box-pressed, and all of them are at a fairly decent price point.
[TC]: Absolutely.
Stolen Throne Yorktown Fleet
Next up on our list here is a personal favorite of mine: Stolen Throne's Yorktown Fleet. It only comes in two sizes. One is a Robusto that is not box-pressed, but you can get their box-pressed Torpedo here, which makes it more interesting because it's not just box-pressed, but you have a different cap on the top. It can also enhance the flavor profile. I definitely suggest smoking both sizes to see if you can pick up on the differences.
Kind of going along with what Alan said here: when it comes to box-presses, you typically think of rectangular, hard edges. This is what I lean toward, maybe seeing more of a soft box-pressed, not quite that rectangular shape, with a little bit of that ovular shape. It's got that compression to give you that little boxy profile.
Warped Corto Maduro
[AB]: And next up, a personal favorite of ours here at Smokingpipes: the Corto Maduro, a brand new offering from our people at Warped Cigars.
The original Corto was also box-pressed, and it was a fan favorite, but, man, this Maduro: We first smoked the samples at PCA this year in New Orleans. Great time. But the Corto Maduro is packed full of flavor from the first light. It's a super-tight box-press, almost square. It has a really interesting profile. I like the weight in hand. But maybe it's the box-pressed that just concentrates this flavor so strongly. We love it. We hope you give it a shot.
Blackbird Crow Box-Pressed
[TC]: Next up on our list, we've got Blackbird's Crow in a box-press. They call it the Prensato Box-Pressed, technically. Normally, the Crow is rendered in a multitude of different sizes that are not box-pressed, but what makes this one more interesting is that you get a little more compression, which almost completely changes the flavor profile.
[AB]: It does. Side by side, I would argue they taste like two different cigars.
[TC]: Absolutely. The Crow in the Corona has always been a go-to for me, which I found to be very impactful, with more of a spicier, stronger-style cigar, where the box-pressed lessens that strength and almost enhances that chocolatey espresso sweetness to go with it.
[AB]: It's super rich.
Padrón 1964
And last, but definitely not least, is the Padrón 1964. When I think of box-pressed cigars, Padrón is 100% the first cigar I think of.
[TC]: Absolutely, box-pressed is synonymously known to me in this cigar, especially in this one. This is the Exclusivo size. It also comes in Maduro and Natural, so you get the best of both worlds.
[AB]: I think Nicaraguan tobacco has been synonymous with Padrón for quite some time. That rich, peppery, chocolatey, sweet profile that I get from this is just luxury in a cigar. It's what a Nicaraguan cigar is supposed to taste like.
[TC]: Absolutely. I would imagine that most people, when they think of Padrón and box-pressed, might not put two and two together because almost every Padrón is a box-pressed version of it. You do have the Dámaso, which is non-box-pressed, and you do have a couple of variations of their other blends that do come in the more round vitola.
These are our top five favorite box-presses on Smokingpipes. Make sure you leave a comment and let us know which is your favorite box-pressed cigar.
