Tasting Notes: Smokingpipes 20th Anniversary Blends
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Smokingpipes.com, and to commemorate such a milestone we've partnered with numerous members of the pipe smoking community to develop and release several projects throughout 2020. Last month, we featured Peterson's limited edition SPC 20th Anniversary pipe series, and more recently, we released Cornell & Diehl's special SPC 20th Anniversary tobacco blends: XX Flake and XX Flake Dark.
Both flakes are Virginia-based blends with substantial portions of 18-year-old Perique. XX Flake features bright Virginias and two Oriental varietals alongside the vintage Perique, while XX Flake Dark is a pure Va/Per blend comprised of stoved and unstoved Red Virginias, bright leaf, and, of course, Perique aged 18 years. With a nuanced flavor profile of spice and citrus notes, XX Flake adds the intriguing essence of Orientals overtop the familiar Virginia and Perique tobaccos, and XX Flake Dark satisfies lovers of classic VA/Per mixtures — the aged Perique in both adding exceptional depth and richness.
On this episode of Tasting Notes, I take a closer look at each of these special edition tobaccos, offering my thoughts on the blends, the nuance of the vintage Perique, as well as the 20th Anniversary project at large. Tune in for more information on the blends, or pick up a tin or two for yourself here: SPC 20th Anniversary Tobacco
Anyone tried XX Flake or XX Flake Dark yet? Thoughts on the 18-year-old Perique? Feel free to share your experiences in the comments below.
