About This Pipe

This is just one of those interesting Dunhill pieces from the 70's. The aftermarket gold band covers a small crack on the shank, that may have been a result from the pipe being dropped or sat on (and thus breaking the original stem). A nice replacement stem was made and some coin was dished out for the gold band. What confuses us is the small flattened area on the left side of the bowl. This hasn't been refinished or reshaped, so maybe this flattened area is just one of those interesting pipes that made it through. It does make for a dandy home base for a left handed smoker's thumb, though. My gut feeling is that this pipe may have had a flaw while finishing and the worker quickly sanded it down before staining.
