Tobacco Selections: Cornell & Diehl Small Batch Steamworks

In this Tobacco Selections video, Jeremy Reeves is excited to share the return of Cornell & Diehl's Small Batch: Steamworks for 2026, available on Tuesday, March 3 in limited quantities.

Note: The following transcription has been edited for clarity and brevity.

The third iteration of Steamworks features a Virginia/Oriental flake-cut blend with St. James Perique from 31 Farms, combining rare, aged tobaccos elevated by our proprietary dual-steaming process. This remarkably balanced, slow-burning, and rich blend affords notes of dark molasses, earth, dried herbs, and gentle spice — with a buttery, creamy mouthfeel that carries through to the last ember.

[Jeremy Reeves]: This is a blend that was inspired by the Red Virginia Cavendish product that we make. It's available in bulk and we use it as the base for Autumn Evening, and it's used in several of our blends.

We decided to make a leaf version of it and play around with flavor profiles that can be achieved through heating and steaming tobacco in particular Virginias, where you can caramelize the sugars and really knock off some of the more acidic notes that some Virginias have and make something that is mellow and deep, but also nice and sweet.

Through experimentation, we decided to take one Virginia from 2019 and steam it heavily into Cavendish, and then a grouping of four Virginias from '17 to '19 that we blended together and steamed for a shorter period to bring down the color a bit. You still have some vibrancy and character in that less-steamed portion of the blend. You have a very mellow but just toned down sweet component in the Cavendish, and then we also used unsteamed Virginias alongside vintage Orientals and Perique from 31 Farms.

This is a blend that I have lots of in my cellar. I'm really excited when we make it and I'm excited to be bringing it back again. I've been getting some emails here and there from folks who are interested in the next round asking when more might be available, and I'm happy to say now.

Look for it at your local brick-and-mortar store and online at Smokingpipes on Tuesday, March 3. We will be launching this at 6:00 PM, so I hope everyone tracks a tin down and tries it for themselves, or if you like it from previous releases, cellar deep on it.

It will certainly be difficult to top the inaugural release in terms of deliciousness, but I have faith that Sir Jeremy will outdo himself. Keep up the great work, C&D!!
