5 Underrated Boutique Cigar Brands

Today Alan Britt and I want to talk to you about five very underrated boutique brands that should be on your radar if they aren't already. These brands make up a bulk of our rotation, and we love 'em all. We hope you enjoy 'em as much as we do. In no particular order, let's get into our five selections.

Note: The following transcription has been edited for clarity and brevity.

1. Stolen Throne Cigars

[Tyler Caldwell]: Let's get into the first offering today, a small brand known as Stolen Throne.

A personal favorite of mine is the Yorktown Fleet. I've always enjoyed it because I like my cigars to be a little more pungent, with a little more kick to it, but nothing completely overbearing. It's definitely that after-meal kind of smoke, but nothing that's really gonna knock you around the dirt too much.

[Alan Britt]: Yeah. I also love Yorktown, but I am partial to the 3 Kingdoms. It's a stronger offering. I actually lit this up and to talk about how underrated this is, the first thing I said was, I don't smoke these often enough. I think that's something worth noting for all these brands; they're ones that a majority of cigar smokers will love. I have no doubts about that.

[TC]: And with so many different brands and offerings out there, a lot of the smaller brands can fall underway compared to what is often advertised out there. I would put Stolen Throne in a top-tier level, for me. It's a brand that I actually gravitate toward fairly often.

[AB]: 100%. They're made at the Rojas factory in Nicaragua. Absolute quality leaf, quality production, and Lee Marsh and the Rojas team are cooking up really great stuff that you should try if you haven't.

2. Wildfire Cigar Company

[AB]: Next up we have Wildfire Cigar Company. Shout out to our boy Jeremy, the camp counselor.

Wanderer is my absolute favorite in their lineup. It's produced by a brand we'll talk about later, Cavalier Cigars. Since this was released, I have kept a box of this in my humidor. I'm smoking 'em 1, 2, 3, 5, 20 at a time. I can't get enough of 'em.

[TC]: Sure thing. What I like about Wildfire is that their portfolio gives you the most unique flavor profiles among the rest. I would like to introduce The Hook. It's a limited-edition version, whereas The Wanderer is going to be regular production, which is always available. So definitely check out both. The Hook was released last year as part of a three-set series.

3. J. London Cigars

[TC]: Next up here we have another small brand known as J. London Cigars. In my mind, they're kind of an industry well-kept secret. It's a brand that's been around for 10 years, I believe now, if not a little bit longer.

They're very underrated. For those out there who want something that is luxurious, smooth, creamy, and perfect for any time of day and screams elegance, you'll want the Lancero form of the Gold Series in your rotation.

[AB]: Absolutely. Killer cigar. I smoke those quite often, but I smoke these more. This is the Mr. London 'The Introduction'. It's a limited series. From my understanding, Jonathan is gonna be putting out a different size of the Mr. London every year.

We still have boxes available. There were 600 made of this. If you haven't tried it, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's blended by Eladio Diaz at the newer Diaz Cabrera factory in the Dominican Republic. Phenomenal cigar.

For all you Davidoff guys, Eladio Diaz was the head blender at Davidoff for quite some time before he left and opened his own factory. Smoke this cigar. You'll love it.

4. Cavalier Cigars

[AB]: Next up, we have some of my favorite people in the industry; the boys and gals over at Cavalier Cigars.

What I love about Cavalier's portfolio is one, they have literal gold on the wrappers, which I think is awesome. For someone who's never heard of the brand, seeing someone smoke through a gold band is just cool, to be honest. But the second thing I love is that they have such a diverse and large portfolio. There's truly something for everyone.

My personal favorite is this Black Series II Viso Jalapa, especially in the Robusto size. One of the stronger cigars, I think, in their portfolio. It's strong and spicy, yet complex, for you medium, medium-plus guys. I think this is perfect. Consider giving it a shot, please.

[TC]: That's right. And to go along with that, we also have the original Black Series II Petit No.2, my personal favorite size and blend of Cavalier's offerings.

It's a little shorter, Torpedo-esque size affording a lot of unique flavors. There's more of that earthier tone with it. It's gonna be perfect to pair with a dark espresso, or something that's gonna be a really heavy-hitting pairing.

Also, as we mentioned earlier, this is the factory that makes a portion of releases for Wildfire. So if you are a fan of Wildfire or Cavalier and you haven't tried the other offerings from either one, you'll definitely want to put that on your radar.

5. Powstanie Cigars

[TC]: Finally here in our list of our five top boutique brands that you might not have heard of, this is a newer offering at Smokingpipes: Powstanie Cigars, a brand that has really impressed me.

This is their Connecticut in the Corona Gorda Justice size. It's not your typical Connecticut. It still has that smooth, rich creaminess, but it's got a little bit of a kick and a little bit of pepper on the retro. Absolutely fantastic.

[AB]: The day we got Powstanie in at our humidor, I smoked this and immediately fell in love with it. It's made by the crew over at RoMa Craft Tobac. So if you enjoy RoMa Craft, you may have heard of Powstanie. And I know for a fact if you like RoMa, you'll love this stuff.

This Habano, especially in the Short Perfecto vitola, is rich, spicy, and complex. It is quite literally everything I look for in a cigar and I've been smoking 'em nonstop.

The Powstanie portfolio is pretty condensed. There's a couple limited editions that are really good, and the new SBC 2024 is also worth trying, which we have now on-site. Powstanie should be on your radar, if it's currently not.

[TC]: Yes, and if you are interested in Powstanie, we have recently released a Powstanie Sampler Four-Pack.

One of the cigars in that pack is a limited edition from a few years ago, the War Bear from 2023, which can only be found at Smokingpipes in this sampler pack, so definitely try them out.

[AB]: Most of these cigars do have their own sampler packs on-site, including Cavalier, Wildfire, and Stolen Throne. Of course we think they're all worth trying.

[TC]: With all of this being said, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to very underrated brands available through us and offerings throughout the world. We definitely suggest trying them all and subscribing here for more cigar content coming to you. Let us know what your most underrated boutique brand is down in the comments.
