About This Pipe Tobacco

Samuel Gawith was the son-in-law of Thomas Harrison, a snuff manufacturer who moved his trade and equipment to Kendal, Cumbria, England from Scotland in 1792. Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Though offering separate blends, both brands remain forever linked and still share the same manufacturing facility in England's Lake District, utilizing processes and techniques that date to the brands' 1792 roots. In many of their mixtures, Samuel Gawith maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

Samuel Gawith's most popular flake tobacco, 1792 features Dark-Fired Tanzanian leaf and Virginias that are steamed and then pressed. Before being cut, the plug is wrapped in a select leaf, pressed again for over two hours, and then baked in a steam press for another two to three hours, further marrying the flavors. Marked by a dark color and decadent flavor profile, 1792 is topped with tonquin and offers a bold, full-bodied smoking experience.

No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. John Donne A lot of interesting qualities to this tobacco, I would suggest putting this in designated pipe as it will infuse its flavor into the pipe. It’s unlike anything out there. The flavor is clove like and vanilla with very rich tobacco that’s smooth yet robust. When I was new to tobacco this blend was a lot to wrap my head around and after some years of exploring many blends this one stands out for its unique qualities. I have only been able to buy it locally as it sells out very fast. It ages wonderfully and is on my list of blends to cellar and enjoy for years to come....Read More

The best

1792 is hands down the best pipe tobacco I've ever had. I only have one caveat to that. It's not a blend i typically smoke all day, especially when the temps are in the 80s or higher. Idk why, but in the heat of the day in full sun it's just a bit much. Maybe now that I've been smoking it for a few years I'd probably be fine in the sun with it. But definitely a perfect end of the work day, sitting on the porch with a book or your thoughts kind of smoke. It's sweet, smokey in the deep bbq sense, a little bready, and it's strong. The casing is extremely subtle, almost nonexistent while smoking. Personally I like to roughly rub this one out with fairly large chunks left. For me it just works best that way. Occasionally I'll just fold a flake, but it's extremely oily and will leave your pipe very moist after. Usually throw this in a large, deep bowl for a satisfying hour+ smoke. I would take this type of smokey flavor over an English, even though I do like English blends too. It just has such a great flavor. Very strong virgina flavor as well. It's just a fantastic blend. I only have two jars left so I hope it's in stock again soon. I've been mixing up my smokes more to make this last longer because it's hard to find....Read More
