About This Pipe
Sutliff Tobacco Company was founded in 1849 by H.W. Sutliff in San Francisco, California and remains a staple across the pipe smoking world, filling tobacco shops and personal cellars alike. In addition to their tobacco processing and blending, Sutliff used to retail cigars, pipe tobacco, and pipes directly to the public, one of which, I suspect, was this straight Pot. Coming to us from an unknown carver, I'm immediately struck by the breadth of the chamber here, coming in at nearly an inch across. What strikes me immediately afterward is the beautiful display of birdseye across the left flank, the squat build and muscular profile used to great effect while coaxing out grain beneath the stummel's auburn stain. Comfortable in hand and fitted with a unique almost-half-saddle stem that pushes upward into the bit just a touch, this pipe is sure to make a lovely addition to the ranks of any rotation.
